Professional Tutoring by Matt Cohn

Matt is a very friendly, intelligent and resourceful tutor who was able to fit my needs as I prepared for my SAT’s during highschool.
His structure and organization in teaching students the skills needed to succeed in a high-​stress, test-​taking environment is impeccable. He goes over practice exams after the student works on it for a week, question by question, and is very patient and understanding to those willing to put in the work. Afterwards, he teaches you about seeing past the questions and understanding the format of the exam, while teaching good time management techniques in preparation for the real thing.
I would recommend him to any student thinking about doing better in the SAT, ACT, other post-​undergraduate exams, as well as preparing personal statements and essays during the college application process.

Matt is great! My husband and I hired him in June 2008 to help our son navigate high school, beginning with the first summer he attended.
During these past four years, Matt has been impeccably professional and diligent in all our meetings. He kept track of my son’s grades even when we would drop the ball on «our watch». He kept his fingers on the pulse of all work that needed to be done. He scheduled sessions around our constantly changing needs due to sports.
He was like having another parent around to help keep our kid on track. I have recommended him numerous times to friends who have also thought he was great, professional, and results driven.
Matt’s rates are reasonable and in keeping with all the other tutors I surveyed prior to hiring him. And his bookkeeping is right on target.

Matt was really great. He’s smart, is quick to come up with clear examples, and adapts each tutoring sessions to your needs. If you are looking for a tutor, I’d definitely vouch for Matt.

Matt is just plain awesome! I couldn’t have had a more different experience then the other review with Matt. In our first chat, I discussed his rates, my goal and overall budget. Although private tutoring *sounds* pricey, it’s not when you compare it to the price of a Kaplan course. I saved big money by using Matt and also got a customized plan and tutoring for the skills I needed. I have a full time job and was pregnant at the time, and so being time effective was important to me. I can’t say enough good things about Matt’s teaching style and how he zero-​ed in on what I needed. I feel I will also use these skills again in grad school. I have been out of school for ten plus years and really need some help revisiting these skills. You get out of a situation like this how much you are willing to put. Matt really motivated me and helped me raise my score. I only needed to take the GRE once as I was so happy with my score. I look forward to working with Matt once I’m in grad school and need someone to proof read my papers.

Matt was recommended to me by a parent from my daughter’s school who told me that he helped her daughter and others at our school dramatically increase their college admission exam scores. I emailed Matt and he was very upfront with me in regards to pricing and the fact that my daughter would need to put additional work into his tutoring program. (I had thought of using a class for this, but realized that my daughter would get more with one on one time with Matt for the same price as the classes.)
His method of tutoring for the test was very successful for us. He started with testing on both the ACT and SAT to determine which one we should work on as sometimes a student can be stronger in testing on one. Then he proceeded to teach her how to learn and review the basic content of each section of the test. He then taught her strategies and tips on taking the actual test. The last part was practicing and timing her on actual practice tests.
He used the time with my daughter very efficiently and gave her work/​tests to do on her own to help keep our cost down. He would review these items and tutor when they met.
He worked directly with my daughter, but kept me very informed of her progress and areas that needed improvement. On top of all this, he sent and continues to send me information on everything to do with college admissions from test dates, to offering to review college essays for FREE for students, and on and on. He has been extremely helpful to us as first time parents that are trying to navigate a completely different college system compared to when we went to college.

Not only did my daughter increase her ACT scores by 10 points, I believe that working with Matt is part of the reason she has also increased her GPA. Many of the strategies and tips for the test are relevant to her school work and tests. I would recommend Matt and his services. He has been incredible!

I went to Matt for help with the quantitative section of the GRE and had a terrible experience. I spoke with him first over the phone, at which time I very explicitly asked him what his rate is. He avoided giving me an exact price, and told me that he would give me a discount because I work as a nanny. He then told me we could meet up and «try it out» and I agreed to this. When we met I found out that his price was quite high and that he actually couldn’t offer me the discount until over a month from then. And on top of that I was being charged for the time spent finding this out! I decided to give him a chance anyway, as I was desperate to find a good tutor, but was also disappointed in his teaching style. I spent three sessions with him, but ultimately decided he was not worth the $. Even though I wasn’t very impressed with his tutoring, I wouldn’t be writing such a scathing review had I not felt that he was very deceptive about his rates.
