Paul Fitzgerald, MD

Dr. Fitzgerald is simply the best doctor I have ever had. He has cared for my husband and me for 15 years, and I am so grateful for his constant concern and attention to detail. To say he is highly proficient and professional hardly describes the way he listens and asks questions… never leaving a stone unturned. He has cared for my Hashimoto’s thyroiditis and other autoimmune problems, and has the keen ability to know what the slightest deviation in the lab tests mean, and makes the proper adjustments. Nothing is too small, or insignificant.
Above all, he has the highest integrity and because of his years of leading the Endocrinology department as UCSF, he knows personally the very best physicians for referrals. Every doctor I have seen has been in a league of their own, thanks to Dr. Fitzgerald making a personal referral.
While he does not take insurance, and it is often a stretch to pay out of pocket, there is nothing more important than our health. Knowing we are getting the very best care and that Dr. Fitzgerald is there for us at all times, is truly priceless. I cannot recommend him enough.

This doctor charges $ 800.This does not include blood work. He does not know anything about natural hormone replacement or about diet except for what I told him. «What is Naturethroid?»!! He does take a lot of time listening to your history, but he seems to like to chat. When it came down to the examination he went straight for my breasts! I was so shocked and told the nurse outside that his exam was inappropriate and that he should be feeling my thyroid and testing my reflexes. He is old and incompetent. Should have retired years ago! He knows nothing about Hashimoto’s disease and I’m sorry to have wasted an afternoon and my money.

Dr. Fitzgerald is the nicest doctor I have ever met. He sincerely listens to your symptoms and does what he can to leave no stone unturned. Appointments with him are not at all rushed like a lot of others clinics. The experience I had was more than pleasant, and I would gladly recommed him no matter what age you are.

Dr. Fitzgerald is the most thoughtful, warm, and thorough doctor I have visited. My first visit was two hours long (which they told me to expect ahead of time, of course, so no problem.) My second visit was about one hour. Both visits were almost 100% actual face time with the doctor: no waiting, no rush, and no wasted time.
It’s incredible how much you can cover in an un-​rushed visit with an exceptional physician. We were going over an array of symptoms, previous tests, medications, and Dr. Fitzgerald delved into the details like a scientist, but with the compassion of a really good friend. I didn’t know that a doctor’s visit could be like this. On just a mental level, it was therapeutic.
You need to know that Dr. Fitzgerald doesn’t bill insurance. They give you a bill that you can submit to your insurance plan, and it’s high. But if you need an internal medicine doctor who will really help you figure out complex health issues, it is absolutely, undoubtedly worth the cost.

I have been a patient of Dr. Paul Fitzgerald for many years. Before becoming a patient, when my mother became diabetic, her cardiologist at UCSF recommended Dr. Fitzgerald as the best doctor in the field of diabetes. Dr. Fitzgerald truly saved my mother’s life, and she was able to live with diabetes until 90 years of age. His care of her was more than impressive, even outstanding would not cover how caring and devoted to his patients this physician displays. He is a «full body» doctor who can combine all that ails you, treat you medically, knows and understands drug interactions, monitors what your other physicians prescribe for various conditions, even when they don’t, and puts it all together to help you get better and stay that way!
An extended member of our family became a patient of Dr. Fitzgerald after 30 years of being misdiagnosed with obsessive compulsive disorder. The family member had high blood pressure, high cholestoral, and had some personality changes. Dr. Fitzgerald put him on the proper meds for the first time in his life and got him a correct diagnosis of a brain disease which was the cause of his inability to make executive decisions, and now that we understand the problem, we can take proper care of him.
Our employee was having several miscarriages, and the night she was scheduled to have her thyroid removed by another endocrinologist who determined that it was her thyroid causing the miscarriages and told her that it had to be removed, I insisted she cancel the surgery and get to Dr. Fitzgerald. She listened to my advice, went to Dr. Fitzgerald, kept her thyroid, got pregnant, and he monitored her weekly until that baby was born, healthy!
I am pre-​diabetic myself and have had many surgeries unrelated to diabetes. Dr. Fitzgerald will send you to the top physicians in the specialized field which you require, and you will know that you will be in the best of care!
I have sent so many people to Dr. Fitzgerald at UCSF. There is simply no doctor today that I can compare to him. My husband, a pharmacist and attorney, who also attended medical school, will not go to anyone else, as his ability to diagnose with great accuracy is rare today. HE TAKES THE TIME to delve into every single detail of what your symptoms are and actually wants you to get better, not just pill-​pushing but listening and helping you to alter behaviors to improve your condition.

I’ve been a patient of Dr. Fitzgerald for more than 25 years (actually approaching 30 years)…since I was a teenager. Over the years I’ve recommended Dr. Fitzgerald to many people, and all have thanked me for doing so. As one of the other reviewers noted, in addition to being one of the world’s best at his specialty, Dr. Fitzgerald is a doctor I can rely on for a wide variety of medical advice. His practice is small and very personal, and is about as un-​corporate as you can get in this day and age. This is my first Unilocal review, and I started with Dr. Fitzgerald because I knew that an unqualified 5 stars would be an easy one to write.

Dr. Fitzgerald is the essence of what it means to be a physician. When I first consulted with him I was suffering from hypo thyroid and the symptoms of fatigue, depression, and weight gain were making me miserable. I had consulted earlier with another physician who didn’t seem able to help, and by the time I met with Dr. Fitzgerald I was quite despairing.
What made Dr. Fitzgerald’s approach so unique is that he employed his interpersonal perceptions of my medical presentation — in other words, he was as interested in my subjective experience as he was in the hard data of the blood tests. According to the tests, my thyroid was within the normal range. My prior experience had been that there was nothing more to be done if the tests were normal.
Fortunately for me, Dr. Fitzgerald believed that this was just the beginning. His approach was to evaluate how I felt as he adjusted my medication. It turned out that what was right for my health was a thyroid that functioned at the higher end of the normal range. His expertise and my experience combined to create a real team approach that has enabled us to totally eliminate my symptoms.
