Racist actions on a customer is no good! The wait remove my bag and beer from my seat. To another table without asking for permission. Push me out of the restaurant and say f* Chinese. Germans are polite most of time but they started the Second World War too

Really enjoyed the food. Tried the caprese and one of the goulashes. Food was tasty, service was pleasant. Worth a return trip.

We had a LOVELY time here! The atmosphere is cozy and friendly. We met one of the owners who was so sweet. Although she is originally from Honduras, she and her partners learned how to make ghoulash and paprikash which were delicious. The handmade gnocchi was excellent. We will definitely come back here.

We really enjoy this place! Great beer selection and menu items. We order the caprese salad each time we’ve been here. The warm toasty bread served with it totally hits the spot. The cheese plate is delicious and the chicken paprikash is divine, we prefer ours served with the melt in your mouth gnocchi. Seems to be owner operated which we so dig. We also recommend trying the sausages!

Simple gastropub with sausage, beers, and goulash. I’m not very familiar with goulash except I remember enjoying it every time I have it. Paprika is a small homey place that has a calming yet inviting atmosphere.
I visited on a week night when there was only one waiter. She wasn’t inattentive but the time in between service was surely due to a lack of staff. It didn’t really bother me in the end. I tried their creamy style szeged goulash with pork and gnocchi. I don’t know much about properly made gnocchi but these were good — pillowy and slightly addictive. At first the goulash definitely has a sudden gamey flavor but I got over it because of the good flavors and wholesome quality.
Oh and they served piping hot bread. Yesss. This was great. I ate an entire basket of bread by myself. Yup.

Had dinner here on a Wednesday night. Had the hungarian goulash and a lager. Good, heavy comfort food that is what Eastern European food should be. Gnocchi cooked perfectly (ie not too soft) and went well with sauce in the goulash. Ended up being a nice spot to fill up before walking around the Mission district to explore for a bit.

Great hospitality and service. We went on Saturday lunch — the restaurant is not full, so able to get a table quickly. We ordered pork goulash and Chicken Paprika — both are great. The meat was cooked perfectly and just the right amount of spices in the stew. Freshly made bread was a nice addition to the whole thing.
Not too many options in the menu — but whatever is there, they are perfect.

Cute, rustic looking place serving hard-​to-​find Hungarian food. We came here for lunch and it wasn’t really busy, we were immediately seated and the owner found us a spot that was out of the intense sunlight.
The menu is small but the selections are pretty good. Half the menu is some permutation of goulash or sausages with a potato-​based side, whether it’s gnocchi or mashed taters. We had the Goulash with Gnocchi ($ 16−17ish) and the sausage plate ($ 8) — we selected the kielbasa, which came perfectly grilled with mustard, ketchup, sauerkraut, crusty bread and little pickles. The owner brought us extra bread for the table, which was perfect for the spicy goulash sauce. Serving size isn’t all that substantial here for the price, but I’m not shocked, it’s the city. Overall, pretty good food, albeit small selection, and cozy atmosphere in a fun up-​and-​coming part of the city.

parking in the area is ehh. Again, it’s the city.

This is a small place with the owners operating it. They make awesome Hungarian Goulash and German sausages with mashed potatoes. That’s about it. Not many options to choose from, but you can’t go wrong. Everything is great here. This is not your stadium hot dog, the sausages are awesome. Recomming trying them all.
Only negatives — portions are relatively small relative to the price.

Pretty mediocre unfortunately. I was excited to try since I like Czech food a lot, but was kind of let down. I got the kielbasa and Hungarian sausage. Both were cooked fine but the plate was just a dollop of mashed potatoes and 3 gherkins along with mustard and ketchup.
Just not too amazing. Also, cash only? Come on man, they’re not a bar! Kind of sad to make your customer walk out of the restaurant to use the ATM in the coffee shop next door.

Your one stop for home cooked Eastern European cuisine.
I came in for the goulash, but I stayed for the sausages. I ordered the paprika goulash, the house special. It came as a thick broth with a pile of diced pork on one side and fresh gnocchi on the other. The pork was savory and flavorful and the gnocchi was chewy and filling. My friends also ordered a variety of sausages which I happily sampled. Each one hand made with different seasonings and cooked quickly and evenly with a unique cooking method that involves pre-​cutting the sausages before cooking. They were a huge hit.
So whether you want something wet or fried, stop into Paprika for a wonderfully cooked meal.

I’m a little surprised by the enthusiasm in other reviews.
I had the goulash, and while the sauce was rich and flavorful, the pork itself had clearly been stewed past its time. I can live with dry pork, especially when a sauce is this rich and thick, but I can’t really do the (frozen?) gnocchi they’re serving… especially not at $ 26/​entrée.
My cousin barely touched her plate of vegan sausage and mashed potatoes. Yeah, her fault on the vegan sausage thing, but the potatoes were eerily reminiscent of my elementary school cafeteria. My cousin will eat *any* plate of mashed potatoes… but not these.
I don’t get any great joy out of bashing Paprika, but it just wasn’t very good, particularly at these prices. I’m pretty sure they could be doing better.

Still love this spot! Their menu hasn’t changed, and neither have the totally down to earth owners.
THE WAIT: None around 7pm on a Sunday evening for four. It was not a busy night for them.
THE SERVICE: The server (she and her husband, the chef, own this joint) is funny. We were kind of the loud table, and she seemed to appreciate that and joined in our some of our jokes.
THE COST: $ 133 all in for four people, including tax/​tip: 4 entrees, 1 starter, a few beers.

This was a good mix of starters! The cheese on the left of my photo was sharper, more dry. I really liked the sun-​dried tomatoes.
* Chicken Paprikash — 4.5 stars
Delicious as always. Very juicy and tender meat, in a flavorful sauce. Love the chunky mashed potatoes.
* Pork Goulash — 4 stars
Creamy & flavorful sauce. Some of larger chunks of meat were a tad dry. I’m a bit particular about my gnocchi and that could’ve been more chewy.

After asking friends for suggestions about places that were similar in style to some Russian cuisine I’ve enjoyed on previous visits to Seattle, Paprika was one of several suggested to me, and certainly the easiest to get to of the numerous options, with the others being on the other end of the city. So, along I came, with a friend, getting their:
* Paprika Goulash — Great, great flavor overall (mostly from the sauce), but the gnocchi was a bit too doughy and lacking in firmness, while the pork itself was too dry for my tastes (albeit tender).
* Mixed Sausage Plate — A combo plate with the Polish kielbasa, and one other sausage I can’t recall: German spice? Hungarian Sweet? I can’t imagine I knowingly ordered the last one, but… read on. So, this combo plate had some good flavor going on too, helped along with the aforementioned sauce in place of traditional gravy for the mashed potatoes. Kielbasa is always quite tasty, but the other one I ordered was unexpectedly sweet, and while not bad, is not a particular one of the taste senses I enjoy when eating sausage (thus, the earlier doubt).
So, the food is by no means BAD. But, given the other gastropubs in the city that I’ve enjoyed far more, I can’t really see myself coming back. Three stars normally, but 2.5 for this reason.

Venue — A bit on the smaller side, with tables consisting mostly (or entirely?) of two-​tops. While a good majority of them are accessible, some are arranged in such a way that they may be inaccessible if you were sitting back to back with someone else.
Bathroom — Didn’t try.

Having just been to Budapest, I wanted to see what SF did In that same vein.
Well, Paprika outdid most of the restaurants over there and added a great bread unit.
Started with the biggest beer ever. No, kind of gigantic huge and delish. And you can get a boot of beer. Who does that?
On to the sausage platter. Nice size to split and with that bread and a good spicy mustard with kraut.
On to the goulash! Perfect. Nothing more to add. Again, more bread to soak up the sauce (which is fantastic!) and all for a very good price.
Service is quick and friendly.
A really good meal in Mission. Highly recommend. Great vibe and better food!

Finding places like Paprika is one of the reason I love Unilocal.Located on 24^th St., a few step from the Bart Station, you’ll find Paprika, a Hungarian German restaurant. This unassuming place tucked in the Mission District of San Francisco makes amazing goulash and serve delicious sausages. They also have wide variety of brews and list of spirits. They don’t have a lot on their menu but what they have, they make very good! The service is two thumbs way up. Only one server taking orders, serving food, refilling drinks, checking on guests and she did it effortlessly! Will definitely return to try the rest of their menu.
Couple of things:
1) CASH ONLY!
2) It’s small place. If your party is more than 4, I highly suggest you call for reservation.
3) Street parking. It might take forever for you to find parking during dinner hours and weekends. Arrive early so you have plenty of time to scout for parking spot. Or better yet, take public transportation. Bart station is right on the corner.

Solid neighborhood place with great food.
The best part: no corkage fee but they provide large wine glasses.
We had the paprika goulash. Even though it’s not served in a bowl like what I had in Hungary, the meat is still very tender — best to use a spoon to make sure that you are taking in a lot of sauce with the meat, which is the best part of the meal
The German spice sausage is also excellent — cooked to the right consistency and not too fatty. The pickles are delicious. It’s pretty spicy so beer may pair better than wine for this dish.
Fantastic value for what you pay here.

TLDR — flavorful, hearty food. good but not really spectacular
I’ve never had German/​Hungarian food before so I don’t really have a basis for comparison or know what’s actually authentic, but I enjoyed the food here!
The menu is pretty small and simple — mostly sausages and goulash. And beer of course (and wine), but my friend and I passed on that. Portions are on the small side for the price, but it’s a healthy portion, especially since it’s pretty much just meat and potatoes/​carbs, so it’s hearty and heavy in general. Any bigger of a portion and I would’ve been way too stuffed!
The place isn’t super big but it doesn’t seem to get so busy that there would be a wait (at least not for dinner on a weekday). But they do take reservations if you feel inclined to make one.
I ordered the PAPRIKA GOULASH and tried some of my friend’s MIX OF 2 SAUSAGES:

Some of the pork was pretty tender, but most of it was unfortunately a tad on the dry side. I wasn’t really a fan of the gnocchi either — it was soft and tender, but too sticky/​doughy for my liking. But that sauce though — SO FLAVORFUL. Honestly, I don’t think I’d order this again if it didn’t have the sauce. I literally mopped up all of it with the complimentary bread. Like completely clean.

My friend got the Polish Kielbasa, which was a spicy sausage, and another sausage that was sweeter (maybe the Hungarian Sweet?). I tried both and they were definitely really good, but honestly didn’t really stand out against other sausages I’ve had elsewhere. Between the two though, I preferred the kielbasa.

I phoned at 9:55 PM last night, in between my last two pieces of work deliverables, it would appear that the restaurant was closed, it might have been a slow night and I left a message for a reservation on Tuesday evening, and asked them to call me back. I’m a believer that one extra step of making a reservation is a good thing to do no matter where you are, even if they say no, what’s the worst can happen? At least you tried. Gabrielle called me the next day, during the mid afternoon and confirmed my reservation.
I showed up when the restaurant just opened. It was closer to the 24^th street BART than I had interpreted from the map. I forgot how easy it is to BART; truth be told, I had forgotten that I had a car and was taking public transit all day long and that sort of worked to my advantage, as my girlfriend who drove would attest, she had to park on 25^th and Guerrero and walk back.
I asked for a hefeweizen on tap as I waited. Happy Hour special is $ 1 off. I had taken up the reserved table for two window seat. It was lovely to watch the colorful wall art and the comings and goings of BART people. Bier was served in a frosted glass and was cold and refreshing. I needed a break from work and this was a nice spot to hide in.
The café style restaurant felt intimate and European, specifically, very Eastern European. There was something about the jazz music playing in the background with simple, unpretentious setting. Gabrielle said that their business partner was Swiss German, her husband Czech and they’ve been open for two years. This place reminded me of, strangely enough, the new Munich pub and wurst place by my (other) house in Southern China, run by two German expats, now living across the boarder from Macau, in the same complex as I (when I am there).
There was something very intimate about this place. It felt that the owners intended to bring a piece of home to a foreign land through food. In my opinion, in the world cuisine scene, Eastern European food does not make it to the top 10, not by a long shot. Too many ready contenders in Mediterranean and Asia to battle for that gourmet scene. But that is not to say that they don’t do well in a specific setting. For someone like me, who grew up on those kind of food in the Northeastern party of China bordering Russia, and to this date make her own sauerkraut from scratch, it’s also, strangely, a comfort food of a sort.
Gabrielle was lovely. She told us that after 35 years of running a Latin restaurant, her aunt retired and left this place for her. She and her husband decided to do something different than just the usual Latin food fare. They along with their business partner decided to make it like how they wanted.
When I was in Prague less than 2 years ago, after having just left Munich, I was surprised by how similar the food felt between the two places. I know many Germans, especially Bavarians, don’t like to think they are anything like the Eastern Europeans, but to me, and to many others with the same untrained eyes, their food do share similarities.
Rather than denying it, I’m DELIGHTED to finally find a restaurant that embrace it.
Final parting thought, this is a good atmosphere restaurant. You blink you could miss it. But don’t. And try to stop by and say hi to the owner /​hostess the next time you get off on the 24^th Street BART.

We ended up at Paprika as a backup option because our original destination was closed. This is a small Hungarian restaurant just off of the 24^th street Bart stop. The menu is fairly simple, mostly consisting of goulash and sausages, which is exactly what we ordered. In addition we got the salumi plate which came with hot bread.
I’ve never been blown away by goulash but I generally enjoy it. This was no different. The sausages were good too, but not so good that I’d come back here specifically for them. I did like the Swiss bockwurst quite a bit though. The meat and cheese plate was forgettable.
I don’t normally comment on specific drinks that I like but I just have to say that I had one of the best Hefs that I’ve ever had at Paprika. Weihenstephen Hefe. If you’re a fan of wheat beers, this place offers one of the best around and I’d actually say it’s worth going out of your way to get one here.
Overall, I wouldn’t come back to Paprika for the food because «I’ve experienced better.» I definitely might stop in to have another beer if I’m in the area though.
