Established in 1973.

Our practice is the culmination of six eye practices that began in the 1950’s and have been constantly updated with advanced instrumentation and state of the art technology.

Business Owner

Dr. Vrouvas attended Indiana University receiving a BS in Optometry in 1969 and his Doctor of Optometry in 1971. Her served two years in the Navy and has been in private practice in downtown San Francisco since 1973.

He is a member of the San Francisco Optometric Society as well as the California Optometric Society, the American Optometric Society, and the American Academy of Optometry. He is a Diplomate of the Academy’s Cornea and Contact Lens Section and is a past president of the San Francisco Optometric Society.

I have been his patient since 98. Even though I live in the Peninsula, I make my annual trip to see him along with kids (now his patients as well). I love that he uses the latest technology and takes time to patiently explain and educate me. I would give him and his staff more stars if Unilocal allowed.

Dr. Nicholas Vrouvas is the best optometrist. He’s friendly, professional, and really takes his time. I’ve been coming here for decades. I especially like the Optomap, which takes digital pictures of my retina without dilation, and he goes over the photos from previous years to show me if there are any problems developing. The office staff is really good as well.

I’ve been going to Dr. Vrouvas for 10 years now, and have been very happy with his office. I find him to be extremely thorough and I appreciate the fact that he takes the time to explain things in detail. He clearly cares about the health of his patients. That is not easy to find. He also helped me through a difficult patch recently with a retina problem, and not only referred me to an excellent specialist, but also personally made the appointment. This office makes it easy!

I rarely make a 2nd Unilocal review but can’t help commend how amazing this place is. Also, I never do any doctor office recommendation via Unilocal. This is the one and only exception because they deserve it.
Dr. Vrouvas and his staff — Alisa and Rochelle — are all amazing. I cannot imagine going to any other optometrist. I just want to reiterate that this place is top notch with regards to technology, knowledge, service and warmth. Six stars if I may say so.

I have visited Dr. Vrouvas twice for my eye condition. He is one of the best doctors I have ever visited. He spent more than an hour to examine my eyes to provide the best solution which would correct my eye sight. After which he suggested me to get a pair of lenses for my eyes. After two weeks I visited the doctor to try my new pair of lenses. The nurse at doctor’s office was really helpful in teaching me on how to put them on. She spent a lot of time with me till I got them right. I put these lenses on and I couldn’t believe my vision. YES! My eyes got back the vision I had a couple of years back. My eyes were filled with tears of joy. I must say this is one of the best gifts I have ever got for Christmas! Thank you Dr. Vrouvas!

My family and I have been seeing Dr. Vrouvas for well over 10 years. I would recommend him to anyone. He is generous with his time when I am there and goes to great lengths to explain the results of my examination. He has all the modern equipment needed for the most thorough examinations. His staff is polite and efficient and even reminded me recently of a vision insurance benefit I had yet to take advantage of this year. That saved me about $ 100 I was about to spend on new glasses. He has always seen me within 5 – 10 minutes of my appointment time.
I come from a medical family at a time when Doctors used to spend more than 5 minutes with their patients. Dr. Vrouvas reminds of those times. All of my other medical providers run their offices like factory lines spending as little time with me as possible. I wish they were all like Dr. Vrouvas.

I have been a patient at Dr. V’s office for years. Unfortunately, I don’t have vision insurance – but the office staff, including Elisa and Rachelle, have been so kind to me. Dr. V is wonderful and I can’t imagine going anywhere else. Even though I no longer live in San Francisco, I still commute just to see Dr. V and get the eye care I need!

So… I never thought I’d recommend an optometrist. I didn’t think there was really a way for an optometrist to be particularly good. Until now. I came out of this appointment grinning. Practically skipping.
Dr. Vrouvas has a unique combination of a warm, grandfatherly demeanor and a hawk-​like attention to detail. He went through every single potential-​eyestrain-​scenario, showed me sweet pics of the backs of my retinas in 3D, and *didn’t* do that eye dilation procedure that gives you vertigo — apparently they have fancy technology that replaces it.
In short: the most thorough and educational eye exam that I’ve ever had, and I went straight back to my work computer screen with undilated eyeballs.

I have been seeing Dr. Vrouvas for over ten years, and while I like him and believe he is thorough — the front office staff has changed over the years and at this point is unfortunately so unprofessional and disorganized that I am actually going to the trouble of switching doctors, and honestly can no longer recommend him.
In my most recent experience, the office staff lost my appointment (which had been confirmed), which caused me to wait for over 90 minutes to be seen after I had arrived. Not a big deal, but a little annoying. After paying for my exam and ordering contacts, I left the office in the late afternoon. They lost the insurance information I had provided and left a message late in the day. I called back a few business days later to make sure they had what they needed for billing. I was informed that they canceled my order for contacts without contacting me. Worse — when I expressed frustration at this, the woman at the front desk indicated that «…she didn’t care if I ever came back to see Dr. Vrouvas…» and told me, «To have a nice life» before hanging up on me. I am truly stunned and feel badly for Dr. Vrouvas that he has employed this person.

I would recommend Dr. Vrouvas to anyone in the city looking for an optometrist. He and his staff made the entire scheduling process, insurance logistics, and overall visits as smooth of an experience as possible. What really impressed me about Dr. Vrouvas was the time and care he put into my visits. He enjoys giving comprehensive and detailed information about what is happening with your vision. I’m really happy with my overall experience.

Truly a shitty experience for a trans woman.
I can’t even count how many times the doctor misgendered me. «Boy,» «man,» «guy,» etc. Every time I promptly corrected him. He just COMPLETELY IGNORED me, smirk and all, and kept going. Hint: when someone corrects you, say «sorry, ‘woman’» or «sorry, ‘she’» and continue on.
Not to mention, when I made the appointment I told the receptionist clearly that I only use female pronouns and forms of address. I guess they just shrug that off, or are too straight to even know what that means.

Literally the best Dr. Examination I have ever had. Dr. V was absolutely outstanding and spent a hour and a half with me. I have keratoconus, and Dr. V is an expert on keratoconus He fitted me with contacts, explained my condition to me, and even gave me a «dummy» set of contacts to wear after my visit while I waited for my contacts to be manufactured and sent to the office.

I love Dr. V!!! I was an optician at a boutique optometry and this office is wonderful! The machines are high tech and you don’t have to get your eyes dilated, so I went during my lunch and got back in an hour! Dr. V is very thorough and shows you really cool 3D images of your eyeballs!
The staff is very sweet and helps you pick out eyewear so for all you that are overwhelmed by the many choices, they will help you find your «look.» They hand select all the frames that are sold and that’s what we used to do in our optometry. This is wonderful because Dr. V has really good taste!
Remember to get your eyes checked once a year because you don’t know what is going on in the back of your eyes! It is very important to pay the extra money for a photograph of your eyes so that they have a good baseline of the health of your eyes. If any funny business occurs, Dr. V will know in advance.

Dr. Vrouvas is great! I highly recommend him to anyone in the area looking for an Optometrist. He has a kind and welcoming disposition. He very simply and understandably talked me through each step of my exam. It was very interesting learning about the current condition of my eyes. Dr. Vrouvas also gave examples of eyes with a more severe condition or ailment which I found educational and intriguing.
The staff was especially helpful. I felt they went beyond in helping me find what worked best for me. I tried on almost every pair and they even pulled more glasses to show me every available option. I have an odd shaped head with uneven ears and they found me a pair of glasses that worked well with my face. I no longer have to worry about hiding my face with a hat because I have these awesome glasses! They look so good that who knows, I just may make it in the modeling business due to the help of Dr. Vrouvas and the fantastic team!
There aren’t enough words that can describe how well Dr. Vrouvas and the staff are. If your eyes are poor… look no more, if your eyes have flaws… go see doctor Vrouvas!

I came here upon recommendation of a friend since I wanted somewhere close, a nice doctor, and somewhere that takes VSP!
First of all, everyone is super nice. Dr. Vrouvas is great and really listens to your concerns. Contacts have always been difficult to wear for me, but he put a lot of thought into picking out a really great brand of daily lenses that I find much more comfortable! The other two women who work in the office are also great! and friendly
They seem to have all of the latest technology when it comes to optometry. For example, a cool camera that can take a picture of your retina (…or something like that…) so you don’t have to get your pupils dilated! My insurance didn’t cover that entirely, but it was worth it not to have huge pupils the rest of the afternoon– and cool to see the pictures afterward!
I was able to get an appointment time fairly quickly and during times that fit my schedule. My contacts came in super fast — ready the next day! I wasn’t going in for frames, but their selection seems to have a lot of cute options.
The location is very convenient. Perhaps TOO convenient to shopping downtown after your appointment!
