Definitely sketch from the outside but shocking delicious! After a looong day in the city my dad decided he wanted to have dinner in Chinatown. I was very nervous as I’m a very picky eater and don’t really like trying new things, however, my family & the boy convinced me to give it a shot and wow was I impressed. I’m knocking them 1 star because their service could of been better! Took about 15 minutes after our party sat for anyone to get our drink order, we then ordered family style and some items were forgotten but aside from those little hiccups everything else was great!

This is old fashion Chinese food! It’s really busy and kinda outdated, but really good mom and pops style Chinese food. You have to try it. Their chicken wings, chow mein, chow fun and fried wonton soup is my usual!

Food was five stars, but slow service took one star away. Food: Salt and pepper pork chop Meat pie, it was crispy and salty but awesome with rice. Fried little fish(dou chun yuir), awesome sweet crispy Walnut prawns Everything was as expected or better. Prices really affordable. Service was decent and friendly but as a lunch spot for work they have slow service. I want to come back often but can’t take two hour lunches for the one by one dishes to slowly come out.

hey for the prices here the food is excellent, it’s no R&G Lounge or Hakkasan, but a truly great«hole in wall.» I suggest this place for tourists — it’s authentic cheap and has a huge menu. Most all your standard cantonese dishes.

This review is not about the food, which was perfectly decent in a neighborhood full of decent Chinese food. It’s about the absurdly slow service and being ignored by the staff. I chose this restaurant because it’s across the street from a theatre where we had tickets to a show at 8pm. When we arrived at the restaurant at 7pm the dining room was about half full. We took our seats at an otherwise empty counter. After placing our order, three other gentlemen, each alone, sat down at the counter and eventually placed their orders. While we waited and waited, all three gentlemen received their appetizers, their main dishes and they finished eating, all before we even received our appetizer. I asked the waitress several times about our order, and she just pointed to the kitchen and said it was coming. Again and again. By the time our food finally arrived at 7:45, we had about 10 minutes to wolf the food down and pay our bill. The food tasted fine, but it’s hard to enjoy when you’re both rushing to eat and angry about feeling ignored. I’m compelled to point out that those who were served faster were all Chinese and we are not. Possibly a coincidence, and maybe not.

Restaurant closes at 10pm we arrived at 9:25pm sat down and was told«You Order NOW» huh, no thank you for coming can I get you a drink. Then at least two people sat and stared at us while we looked at the menu not even 1 minute later was asked what we wanted. End of story we got up and left. Chinese food doesn’t take 30 minutes to make, and I get you close in 30 minutes but you are open right now and there is no need to be rude to people coming into your establishment.

2nd time to New Woey Loy Goey Restaurant we had a late lunch after 1pm and place was busy. I wanted wonton hofun noodles, but lady kept asking if I wanted meat. What? ok meat bbq pork. So I got noodles and bbq pork, but no wontons! Aiya. Since it was written in Chinese can’t tell if I paid for the wontons in the soup, cheap anyways under $ 7. B. got wonton beef stew noodles — under $ 7, he liked his dish. Mixed vegetable dish — not enough veggies, they put tofu, snow peas, mushrooms, and vermicelli noodles! Under $ 7. Can charge it, but we again paid Cash! Aiya, gotta remember to ask if we can use Cards. I gotta stick to my oxtail and rice dish which I liked last time!

Tried it out after months of walking by and saying we should try it. Ordered pork spareribs in black bean sauce rice plate. It was a delicious lunch plate. Lots of Asian patrons, the resto itself is spotless. So many options, must go back. Also very reasonable prices.

Amazing and utterly authentic Chinese place in Chinatown(duh, but still, many are much more touristy). And there’s that perfect name! You have to go down stairs seemingly into a basement to get there. Seriously, I think there was one other non-Chinese person there, and it was packed. The waiter interrogated my wife to make sure she really wanted salted fish(she did) because apparently most tourists don’t know what that means, or like it when they get it. Anyway, it’s the best duck plate you will ever get for $ 4.50. How do they even do that? The fried oysters were large(good but not great) and the salted fish was also good. You get a hot tea(like, super hot) the second you sit down. Can’t recommend this enough! New Woey Loy Goey! Also worth noting the single TV had a Serie A Italian soccer game on(in Chinese).

Pretty good. Other lines were so long and this seemed like a safe bet since there were several people inside. It quickly filled up. My kids at the Peking duck and loved it. Sweet service, good price and underrated for sure.

I really loved the atmosphere of this place, a little divey and a little homey all at the same time. It’s located in the basement of an old building in Chinatown and you have to take the stairs down into this quaint little restaurant. Some of the staff did not speak English but they were still helpful and tried their best to communicate with us. I felt kind of bad because I wish I could’ve communicated with them. Mr. Lee, the manager of the place who does speak English, was very hospitable and attentive to our party of 7. We came in around 9:00 pm. Service was quick as well. We ordered Scalloped Fried Rice with egg whites, Snow Pea Shoots with garlic, Deep Fried Flounder, some sort of steamed chicken dish, Hot & Sour soup, Beef Chow Mein with tender greens, and some sort of egg omelette dish, I forgot the name of it. The Scalloped fried rice was delicious, a bit too salty for my taste but I liked the flavor on the scallops. The Snow Pea Shoots with garlic was tasty and probably one of my favorite dishes of the night. I just like the combination of garlic and a little bit of soy sauce with vegetables, it’s so simple but delicious. The Hot & Sour soup wasn’t my favorite. There was something off putting about the taste, I couldn’t quite put my finger on it. It just tasted bland and had a weird texture to it. The Beef Chow Mein with greens was delicious as well, I thought the beef was cooked perfectly. My family and I really enjoyed the Deep Fried Flounder that we ordered another dish. The fish was tender and slid right off the bone. We also ordered a steamed chicken dish, it reminded me of Hainanese Chicken(though I’m not too sure if that was the name at this restaurant. I completely forgot what this dish was called). Nevertheless, it was nice and tender and the red sauce that came with it wasn’t too spicy. The last dish was some sort of egg omelette with vegetables inside. It was just okay. The omelette itself was a little soggy. Overall, I had a good experience. My family enjoyed the food as well. I will definitely come back to try some other dishes on the menu. The service was great and one of the reasons why I would come back to this restaurant. It’s always nice to have friendly people helping us.

My parents brought my family to this basement restaurant and it was quite an experience. Felt like it could be a dive in Hong Kong in the 1970s. Most of the patrons were Chinese speaking, which is a good sign at a Chinese restaurant. Some of the wait staff did not speak English. The menu included a special with five dishes plus«house soup» for under $ 40 plus a charge for rice. The dishes were salt and pepper shrimp with heads, garlic sautéed mustard greens, deep fried pork chops, cold chicken with a ginger and salt dipping sauce and steamed pork hash. A red bean dessert soup was also included. We thought the food was really flavorful and a great deal, but about two hours after dinner, my son and I both had headaches. Not sure if it was from MSG or maybe we were dehydrated from too much salt We will try another time and see if we get the headaches again

This place is becoming one of my family’s to-go place for dinner. This place is one of the most authentic restaurant you can get. You can tell just by coming here because they been in business for decades and a lot of the customers are actually locals. Plus… if a Chinese person says that the food that they’re paying for is actually better than home-cooked meal, that is saying something. Which happened to my family at this restaurant, and trust me, my mom never says that about any restaurant… even if they’re a michelin-starred restaurant. What’s even better is that this place is affordable! They have single individual noodle/rice plates that range around $ 5 – 8 and family style plates that ranges around $ 8 – 12 each(excluding higher range dishes like lobster). The service is great– always attentive and nice. Unlike most restaurants in CT, they do not treat tourists any«higher» than a local. Anyways to food… generally me and my parents order the same dishes so here is a breakdown Recommended: –Seafood + Tofu in a clay pot: my personal favorite. there is a variety of seafood(squid, shrimp, scallops) cooked with fried tofu, mushrooms and lettuce. Love this! Comes hot and stays hot. –Salt and pepper fried pork chop: would also recommend. Pork chops are fried and tossed with jalapeño peppers and salt. the pork chops are tender and seasoned perfectly. –minced pork + garlic sauce eggplant in clay pot: my boyfriend’s personal favorite. the eggplants are sliced thinly and not even overcooked. –steamed oysters with black bean: the oysters are fat! they give you about seven and they don’t even skimp and give you dead cheap oysters. «Meh» dishes: –fried flatfish(flounder): sorry, I don’t know what’s the fish is called in English but it is deep fried flatfish served over a sugar soy sauce. This is probably the only dish my parents did not like. Major complain is that the fish was not crispy enough. –shrimp with cashew: we ordered this thinking it was fried shrimp w/walnuts in that white mayo sauce but some miscommunication and we ended up with this. The cashews were soggy, and overall there wasn’t anything special about this dish. –chinese style snails: my mom’s complaint was that it was too salty, my dad’s was that there wasn’t enough taste. I thought overall it was okay. but personally this dish wasn’t anything special. it simply tastes like snail stir fried with soy sauce.

Retro. Made me think of the good old days when we ate like there was no tomorrow. Three, four bowls of rice was no big deal and what is trans fat again?! We’d eat like there was no tomorrow because we’d burn it off playing sports and keeping active. As responsibilities like paying bills and saving for our future became priorities, we were no longer the playahz we thought we were. That’s why when you find restaurants that offer lunch or rice plates under $ 8.00, you take notice. With my lunch rotation place on vacation, this place came to mind. My order? Minced beef and egg over rice( ), Cantonese staple… think scaled down loco moco. Flavors were solid but I like a little«kick» to my food, so added some Yank Sing chili sauce and it was complete. Sweetness from the peas, salty richness from the oyster sauce, offset by the runny yolk. Top it with the spiciness and my $ 7.00 meal brought a Cheshire grin to my face. Calling it my flavorfied loco moco! The soup was flavorful though one note as there were no other ingredients in my container(suspect it was lotus roots boiled with pork pieces, lean given the broth color. Those growing up in Chinatown will remember this as the third choice for casual American comfort food(Sun Wah Kue and Jackson Café being the more popular choices). They made a KILLER roast pork with gravy and cabbage back in the day. The crispness of the pork skin and the melt in your mouth tenderness of the pork and fatty trimmings were unbeatable; similar to the now closed Mariposa Cafeteria. After closing, the chef owner/partner of the unparalleled 1980’s Kam Lok(another basement restaurant) broke off and took over this space. The cuisine stayed the same though the kitchen’s skill level slipped a bit. Solid budget eat spot with old time cuisine, but might not be a good idea to bring a date here… unless you are really hurting in the pocketbook.

Chinatown, San Francisco, CA: What a funny looking name for a restaurant. «New And Peaceful Café» is a loose translation. After reading through a number of posted menus in Chinatown at near 9 pm, and consulting with Unilocal,we decided we would try our luck here for late takeout dinners. The lunch specials seem to be available all day. FOOD Chicken Chow Fun: generous, enough for 2 Bittermelen with Blackbeans and Beef – all so tender, over white rice Lotus Root with sliced Pork and wood fungus, over white rice(lotus root still too firm, but was seasoned decently) Staff provided friendly service, answered my questions, gave prompt service. Good comfort Cantonese food! Went back the next day for Filet Rock Cod with Bean Cake Rice. $ 18.25 for the three dishes! Original restaurant opened in 1934. NOTE: We’ve had the Beef with Bittermelon rice($ 4.95) again and it is consistently great! Beef Chow Fun with Chinese Broccoli was fresh, tender, and they made it less salty as requested. Free soup was included with dining in.

While roaming the streets of chinatown for the first time, I came across this restaurant. I have to say I was very impressed by how authentic their Chinese food was. They start you off with a hot bone soup with daikons(white radish) and carrots which was veryyyy good. Refer to my photos to see what we ordered but compared to other Chinese restaurants I tried in San Francisco, this one was the best!
