Naan-N-Curry

So sad that it is gone.
I’ve only ever ordered to go food from this place, but I’ve found them to be very consistent. I always thought they had the best Naan out of all the indian /​paki restaurants in the area — it’s always fluffy and soft, just like I like it.
Also if you ordered something «EXTRA HOT» they actually managed to make it EXTRA HOT, but still taste good!
I will miss this place. Hope the one in Berkeley is still there.

Soo… if the place wasn’t so conveniently located across the street from my hotel and open ²⁴⁄₇ I would have left for sure.
The place smells musty (like when you forget you have clothes left in the washer for a long time, then you dry them anyway instead of re– washing them, and instead of being April fresh they smell funky). Then they seat you, take your order, and ignore you. Then drop your food off and ignore you. Tall skinny guy in a trendy suit (owner maybe?) walks by the entire time (and ignores you). I literally had to walk to the pay counter to get a drink refill.
Food didn’t taste bad, good flavor. A little too spicy but liveable. However, the breast from the tandoori chicken looked like it came from a canary. Tiny! Laughable… Solution? Fill the rest of the plate up with plain chopped up iceberg lettuce. Not a salad, mind you. Just lettuce. Thanks Iron Chef! Super creative.

The food is delicious. The checkout, sort of brute and tries to strong arm you for cash. Not the cleanest looking joint. I tried the lamb tikka masala and the first time, sent it back because it was all bones, the second time, got it home and again, full of bones. I gave it one final chance and again, full of bones! Agh!!! Last time I’ll be messing with that dish :(. They get 3 stars for price and flavor… otherwise, they would be down to 1 star. I’ll be back because of location, price and flavor… I can deal with hit or miss service, just no more lamb masala for me.

At 12:30 pm after along day of sighseeing — we assumed SF was a late night city, especially since we were staying in Union Square. Much to my surprise, couldn’t find a place to eat at other than pizza. Enter Naan N Curry, A large but super dumpy place near UnionSquare.
Only problem we had was that the staff was 3 people down, so the chai wasnt available, service was shit, tables were still dirty and many items weren’t available.
But the food was good! naan, achar kitchen, BBQ. The guy managing was very hospitable and even apologized for the inconvenience. Weloved the fact that around 12:45/1 am, hordes of people started coming in and it became a little party in the restaurant itself.
I’ve read some of the other reviews. Yes, there are better places to eat at in the Tenderloin, but 1 am hungry and exhausted — this comfort food hit the spot!

I come to this establishment almost every time after going out to bars and clubs around the area as it is one of the only restaurants open past 2am on weekends. In addition, I love Indian food after a night out of drinking.
The food is not the best as I’ve had their chicken tikka masala a few times where the chicken is not fully cooked. I’ve had their other dishes and was obviously not fresh, but, Indian food is what I crave for to get sobered up.
Their service is not the best either. I always felt rushed when ordering and felt that they just want my money. Not only that, they «prefer» cash as their credit card machine is «out of service.»
This review is not about the food or service, it’s about the employees. They were all fighting, verbally, about 6 of them including the front and kitchen staff, and didn’t seem like anyone of them was trying to stop it. It was a good 5 minutes till one of them finally backed off but some of them were obviously mad at each other as they would speak English once in a while and used a lot of foul words — while customers were listening and observing them!
Customers trying to buy food were leaving and so did customers halfway through their meal. My friends and I, too, left.
Never going back to this place again. Bad service, food is blah, and employees are fighting in front of customers! The only reason why I’ve come to this place is the craving of Indian food after drinking. I’ll be satisfied with the nearby diners going forward. I’ll be happy if another late night authentic restaurant replaces this place, and hopefully with better service, fresh cooked food and professional employees.

I’ve ordered from the restaurant A LOT of times, their food is usually really good. I order pretty much the same thing all the time. Today their food was awful!!! Watery, bland and tasteless. Even the rice seemed like it was old rice that had been sitting out for a while– it smelled like a wet dish towel.
Ended up throwing it all out. Yuck!!! Will NOT be ordering from them again.

The service was mediocre and the food was as well. I paid $ 12.95 for 3 golf ball size chunks of chicken, drowning in sauce and 1 piece of garlic naan. They got the 2^nd star because their garlic naan was pretty good.
They also need a better method for providing their customers with water to drink. They have a self serve water area, unfortunately it was empty and took a worker almost 15 minutes to refill.

Taste: 5 stars.
The food is mostly amazing, but the operations are… embarrassing.
So we’re on our way back from the Muir Woods, it’s like 8pm, we both work at 6am, and we live in Folsom. Is it a good idea to stop at Naan N Curry on the way home? Of course it is.
When we walked in, we were told, «Take menus, sit down, figure out what you want, and come back.» We said, «We already know what we want.» Then we were told, «Oh, okay, I’ll be there in just a few minutes.» There were a total of five people seated in the restaurant, and two already had their food, so… um… okay? A few minutes later, we ordered.
After we had been waiting over 25 minutes for our food (yes, I was timing it), and the party of 6 who had sat down five minutes after us had been entirely served, I was starting to get pretty peeved.
Finally, a professional Culinary Tourist comes out with one of our plates and tours the entire (large) restaurant three times before bringing it to us. We are sitting there waving and calling, and the man at the register is pointing to us the whole time… it was kind of embarrassing for everyone. So I ask him if the rest of our food is coming, or the naan, or the rice, or the mango lassi, and he says, «Yes, yes, everything coming.»
Just a few minutes later, the rest of the food came out on a makeshift tray. I carry very large ovals all day at my job, so I was actually kind of impressed how this restaurant ghetto-​rigged it. During the course of our meal, I also saw him serve food from (among a plethora of strange items to be serving food from) a square-​shaped prep tray which looked like it had just come out of a hot box. The man was not using any sort of towel or service napkin. I doubt that his hands have felt temperature changes in many, many years.
As the CUliNary Tourist sat the rest of our food down on our table, he leaned in to my boyfriend and said, «If YOU need anything else, please let me know, okay? You are my good friend. Me and you, we are good, good friends. Okay?» Nothing was said to me. I can’t decide if this is because I was less likely to be the one paying, or because I had been pretty stressed out when asking where the rest of our food was a few minutes earlier.
We ordered chicken tikka masala, aloo gobi, garlic naan, rice, and two mango lassis. The mango lassis really threw me off because they tasted a lot like carrot juice, and very little like mango lassi. I love (d) the food here, but these were probably the worst mango lassis I’ve ever had. I would not recommend them.
The aloo gobi was okay, except that it was presented terribly, with all of the food on the right side of the plate, and about a tablespoon of oil dripping all over the left side of the plate. It really wasn’t a huge portion, but I could only eat about half because that’s all the grease I could stomach.
The chicken tikka masala was so good that, in spite of everything else I’m saying, I’m considering pausing writing my review to drive back to the city for more of it.

The tikka masala is SO. EFFIN. GOOD. Take that, Unilocal filter. That tikka masala is good AF.
On the way out, unfortunately, we decided to use the restroom. Stories from the next five minutes will follow me for the rest of my life. Here are the pro-​tips which I will share from my experience:
#1: If you have to use the bathroom, use a different one.
#2: If you are going to use the bathroom here, you are not going to eat here ever again.
#3: If you need a place to do drugs or nap in a puddle of urine, this is it.
Of all of the things I saw in the kitchen while I was walking by it, the most baffling was a bucket of onions which was sitting in a puddle of water on a very large, very wet floor surface area with no wet floor signs, mops, or hoses in sight. About 80% of the onions were in the bucket, and the rest were on the floor. Three men who (hopefully) worked there were standing about ten feet behind the bucket, eating. There was a sink a few feet away, but… it’s just one of those scenes that makes your brain wonder, «What the crap happened here? What is the purpose of this?»
So finally I will admit that I chose this location because the two other locations I had wanted to go to were both permanently closed. And maybe, just maybe, and probably– there is a very good reason for that, and it has nothing to do with how much money they were making. And maybe the food inspector from the city is just a little bit busier than the one in Berkeley…
The food here tastes pretty good. And if you’re okay with having your food prepared in a garbage bin and served on whatever can be found at the moment the food is ready, and if you have a very large bladder and a stomach of steel, or if you just need some kind of natural laxative in the way of food poisoning, you should give this place a try.

I do not see why people are raving about this place… At all. The set up is weird, the guy ushered us to some shitty seats and then we had to get back up and order at the counter bc he didn’t come back and take our order after he rushed us to sit. Split a chicken tikka with a friend and there were literally two pieces of chicken… Small ones at that… Like I’ve been to a few Indian spots and I mean it’s not my «go to», however, I enjoy chicken tikka… This was like the cheapest shit I’ve ever tasted and the sauce literally tasted like ala vodka sauce, I’m not even kidding… Nan was ok but who the hell only wants bread, I could have walked to the sketchy ass mini mart and walked out with some snacks and I might’ve been more satisfied.
Yes the food is cheap but you do not get the bang for your buck like you would at other Indian restaurants where they have plentiful portions. You get what you pay for here… The food was also really tasteless… like isn’t Indian good usually seasoned extremely well and having a field day of flavor in your mouth? Lol… This place is solely living off of reputation.

This is definitely NOT a place to come for good food, sanitary environment or great customer service. The only thing that gives this place its 3 stars is its ambiance late at night — they put on your favorite bollywood songs on friday and saturday nights and you can dance your night away (literally, they stay open till 4am). Tons of fun, more so if you’re intoxicated enough, but possibly annoying/​ridiculous to those who are not… oops ;)
If you do get food, I remember the naan being good/​soft/​warm. Other than that, can’t really recommend the food.
Tips:
+don’t think too hard if your table and the chairs seem kind of dirty (read: really dirty) especially if you’re a germaphobe like me
+enjoy the ambiance and music and your friends
+come with low expectations and you’ll have a much better time!

Cheap food is great at 3am… unless it’s complete garbage. I love Indian food, but this place was a complete waste of time and money.
Me and my friend went there, waited in an extremely long line (this is the only place open in the area, so not very surprising), and after 30 minutes, we saw empty tables and a back-​up of people waiting. My friend went up to see what the deal was, and the «security guard» at the line told him that he was being «extremely rude» to ask such a question…
We get to the counter to order, and the person behind it is busy texting and fielding orders (clearly the only person in charge) while 6 guys behind him are fighting over who’s iPod to put in the stereo deck behind the counter. They put on their music, which is fine, but then they (clearly drunk), begin to push over people dancing around and almost knock a waiter over while he’s bringing food to the tables.
And that finally brings me to the food. Once again, I frequently eat Indian food, and we ordered Paneer Naan, CTM, and some other dishes. The naan was tasty, I will admit. But the rest of the food was complete garbage. If it wasn’t for the red pepper flakes they dumped in it, there would be no flavor at all. You can tell that if it wasn’t spicy it would have literally tasted like nothing.
Being cheap only goes so far if the staff is rude, the ambiance sucks, and the food is flavorless.

Oh how I love me some Indian food. And when a place like Naan & Curry is open late nights when you’re wandering around in SF after a night of debauchery, this place hits the spot.
I won’t bore you with my exciting night of fun, but I will tell you how amazing the food is here:
Chicken Tikka Masala $ 8: If you’ve never tried Indian food and need an introductory plate, this is it. You will fall in love with this rich creamy yellow sauce and sliced up chicken. Take some of that Naan bread and dip it in. Shove it in your mouth and you’ll hear yourself saying «Mmmmmm» while closing your eyes. Trust.
Prawn Masala $ 12: I’m a sucker for prawns as it is, but this spicy dish had the extra cilantro to push it over the edge. Yup, I was sold. My taste buds were on fire with this.
Paneer Naan $ 3: I’ve usually had the regular Naan with no added flavoring so this was an extra special surprise to me when I saw that it had cheese stuffed right into the bread. Who doesn’t love chees-​y stuffed bread? Perfect for dipping into any of the Masalas or by itself.
Mango-​lassi: This beautiful concoction of a drink takes one of my favorite fruits– mango– and blends it with milk and sugar. I have to pace myself when I have this stuff because my tendency is to take the straw and gulp away. No shame in that except when I look at my drink and discover that it’s all gone. Sadness.

Firstly, I’m a person who never writes reviews, but this is a special case. I’ve have been to bad restaurants and worst restaurants. And then I went here. I have eaten at over 20 places in the bay area which serve Indian food and this is by far the worst. We ordered food and after 40 minutes they tell us that it’s over and the replacement was the worst vegetable I’ve had in my life. For some reason they serve naan, 30 minutes before they serve vegetable. People working there are some of the most ill mannered people in the business. You’d be better off starving one night than eating here, no jokes.

The naan is so good! We came in last night close to 11 pm. The location is amazing, two minute walk from our hotel and 10 min walk from bart. Onto the food…
We ordered the paneer tikka masala and the palak paneer along with some rice. The rice is good quality, not the texmati stuff some other restaraunts use. We ordered ours spicy and they delivered on the heat. Anytime I stay at the hilton I will definitely tak a walk across the street and come here.

Watch your belongings, I recently ate there with a group of friends for a birthday dinner and left my phone on the table. I had my bf go back less than 5 minutes to retrieve my phone and the guy working at the register told him to check with the employee working in the back kitchen.
My boyfriend located the EMPLOYEE and asked if he’d seen my phone and the man said no, but my boyfriend insisted that it was less than 5 min from the time when we had left and the employee then said «how much do you have?»
Meaning, (give me money and I’ll give you your phone back!!!)
REALLY !!! Does this place not pay their staff enough that they have to extort customers phones for cash? My bf gave the guy $ 20 and he got my phone back. This is just sad really…

Das Ambiente ist zwar nicht das tollste aber die Bedienungen sind so überfreundlich, dass man sich auch als nicht Inder sehr willkommen fühlt!
Das Essen ist super und preislich schon fast zu billig, man bekommt Riesen Portionen zu kleinem Geld! Gerade in der City optimal da alles so überteuert ist!

Naan n Curry at 2 in the morning? Yes please!
Always a stop for me when in San Francisco after a late night out in the city. Order at the front counter and take your number to your table. My go to dishes are the Chicken Tikka Masala, Butter Chicken, Baingan Bharta (eggplant), Channa Masala (chickpeas), Biryani (fried rice), and Palak Paneer. All their dishes are super tasty, full of flavor and spicy! Their naan is awesome and the size of a small pizza.
A great place to share different foods with friends. The price is on point and you receive a lot of food. Also, they have unlimited chai!
I look forward to dining at Naan-​N-​Curry every time I am in San Francisco!

I came here once before and it was okay but last night’s take out was way better.
I ordered lamb biryani, tandoori chicken, and samosa. The lamb biryani was really good, the lamb was boneless, fresh, and spicy. The rice was more like seasoned rice than biryani style but that is okay, its Union Square. The tandoori chicken was amazing and it was $ 3 a leg. One order of samosa is $ 4 and you get 2 pieces, they are a bit small but very good in taste.
The whole layout of the place is sketch and especially the area to get to the bathrooms.

I used to get the cheese tikka masala all the time during my undergrad years at Cal. It was my favorite dish and Naan N Curry was my introduction to Indian food. On my trip to SF this past weekend, I walked past this location and got hit by a wave of nostalgia. I dragged the bf and and promised him some cheap, quick, delicious Indian food before we headed back to LA. I was disappointed in the tikka masala. It did not taste the same as it used to; however, the chicken curry dish was decent. Garlic naan was soft, although the Basmati rice was slightly on the dry side. Smaller portions but it’s less expensive than some of the other Indian joints I’m used to.
I thought our food would come out fast, but we waited about 15 – 20 minutes or so after ordering, and the restaurant wasn’t in the least bit busy.
I think nostalgia got the best of me, but for the price, it’s not bad. If you want good Indian food, I would check out the other places in the vicinity. SF is not short on good restaurants.

I stumbled upon this place after a night of fun and wondered where I was??? It was curry heaven! The place was packed with locals and lots of Indians, so you know it’s legit, right?!
The cashier wasn’t the friendliest. Luckily, our only interaction we had was our order up with him. After our order, we waited for our food at our table with plenty of people watching. Naan N Curry seems to be the place to be after the bars and clubs in SF and BOY, were they filling and turning this place into another party!
I would say the dishes are A-​OK, but you can’t beat hot curry and fresh naan after midnight! Naan N Curry is the place to be for late night eats in downtown SF.

Ok, it was 2:30am when we crawled into this place as I was starving. You can take a star off for that ;-)) however considering that I am Indian and can cook ok Indian food, you can put the star back on lol
Finding a kebab shop in SF is not an easy task and this was the next best thing we could find :-) Looks dated and scruffy but don’t let the looks stop you from eating here.
Foods quite reasonable here and we shared two curries, two naans, rice and drink for under $ 20 :-) we chose two veg dishes Palak paneer and Chana masala on recommendation from the chef. It was excellent and we licked our plates clean :-) in retrospect asking the chef in Hindi was not a bad idea ;-)
My friend who was with me loved it and the food had a nice kick to it. I would happily come back here for a quick meal for a reasonable price.

BEsonders empfehlen kann ich das… hmm was war das noch… weiß nicht mehr wie es heißt, aber es ist auf der Karte ganz unten… ach ja und es ist scharf wie die Hölle, vielleicht doch besser die darüber stehende milde Variante nehmen. Und auf keinen fall vergessen. Das Knoblauch Naan Brot. So ein leckeres Naan hab ich seitdem nie wieder gegessen…
