MUNI – 48 Quintara/24th St

This bus line is alright but is stops too many time. I have cought this bus at 23^rd and Vermont street to 24^th and Douglass street. This bus line is so slow it stops like and ever bus stop. This line needs have a 48L for those that need to get where they are going is a sort amount of time.

–2 Stars for the bus for not running all-​day service to Sunset. and having to stop ridiculous at Valencia Street…
3 Stars for having service in certain places that people wanted,.great connection other bus routes and good recovery from delays.

Worst MUNI line ever. Totally unreliable. Bus are skipped all the time, leading to 40+ min wait. NextMuni times are never respected.

Reliable from 24^th and Church to Portola and back.

Best Driver Ever,
The young woman driving the 48 on April 11, has got to be my favorite driver of all time.
Here’s why:

* Friendly! Said hello to every passenger boarding at 24^th Street & Mission
reason #2:
* Attentive! Pulling in at 24^th St & Castro, asked if any riders were trying to transfer (yes), and honked to get the attention of the other Muni driver. If this case, it didn’t work, but good idea

* Great driver! Passenger requested the Hoffman Loop. Some fool had parked an SUV in turn-​around on the steepest part of the hill. Muni driver made a four-​corners turn, cleared the SUV by 2 inches, got a nice ripple of applause !

Drivers are rude on this line. And I agree with the person who said they improvise the route. I pulled the cord and the driver pulled over at some random place. No dude, pulling the cord means I want to get off at the next stop ON THE ROUTE. How can you not know what that is? It’s electronic.

This is the route I took when I was in middle school. I liked how the 48 takes me from 24^th St and Potrero all the way to school on 14^th Ave and Santiago.

This route takes students to and from:
— Herbert Hoover Middle School and
— Abraham Lincoln High School
Also goes to and from Ocean Beach at Great Highway and Rivera to 20^th St & 3^rd St. All other times: it goes between 20^th St and 3^rd St and West Portal Station!

— San Francisco General Hospital
— 22^nd St Caltrain Station
When headed toward Potrero Hill, board this bus at:
A) Great Highway and Rivera*
B) Ulloa and West Portal
C) 23^rd St and Utah
D) 23^rd St and Vermont
E) 23^rd St and Kansas
F) 23^rd St and Rhode Island
*school days only!*
Buses on this route are known to be once it stops on 24^th St and Mission, but it starts clearing from 23^rd St and Utah to 25^th St and Pennsylvania. It really would be nice to see frequency on this route improving.

I know we’re not supposed to like MUNI but I think it’s not a bad system & I’ve spent quite a bit of time in very public transit oriented cities.
I take this line probably 3 or 4 times weekly — recently spending more time in Dogpatch so it’s a straight shot home to The Mansion in Noe (gets me to the front door). So it’s Bayview — Potrero Hill — Mission — Noe which is quite a journey in many ways.

so don’t find myself waiting too long and everythig works out just fine. Very mixed crowd and, ya know what, that’s just fine — we’re all in this together.

I love the line. I hate the drivers.
The outbound 48 saves me from a 3−½ block walk if I had taken the L-​Taraval instead. In the Sunset district, one Sunset block equates to two regular blocks and therefore, 3−½ blocks become a 7-​block walk. I don’t know about you, but after a long day of work, a 7-​block walk in the cold and dark just doesn’t seem very appealing.
The bus ride always feels like a rollercoaster, a very-​bad makes-​you-​sick-​to-​the-​stomach rollercoaster. The drivers must be running late ALL the time. ‘Cause they drive those buses reallllly fast & step on those brakes realllly hard. The outbound route is mostly downhill. That and the combination of 4-​way stop signs at almost every block, it’s a whole lot of speeding-flying-stopping-&-jerking on repeat.
Once again, love the line, hate the drivers.

The main thing I love about the 48-​Quintara/​24^th Street is how confusing its marquee is. Forty-​eight and 24 look related to each other, and then when you’re going towards Potrero Hill, I think it also has 22^nd Street up there.
Anyway, this is a pretty useful bus line if you’re trying to get from Potrero Avenue around SFGH to Noe Valley or vice versa – or anywhere in between. I was kind of skeptical at first, but it’s a straight-​shot line along this part of the route, and it comes fairly regularly.
This was also the first line on which I rode one of the hybrids, and it made the ride nicer. The route passes by the 24^th Street BART station, and if you’re patient, it also goes to the shady CalTrain station in Potrero Hill. I don’t understand its design east of Potrero, but I never take it out that way either.

reliable in the morning, toss-​up at night. i ride this bus (when it’s around) most days to get between caltrain, potrero, and the mission.

publishes schedules for some lines (including this one), but i don’t even bother looking at them b/​c they’re NEVER accurate.
is what i use to find what buses are where and when.
but in the evening… it’s a different story. this is one of those buses that will return false positives about when it’s arriving. sure, my phone says it’s coming in 7 minutes… but it keeps saying that for about 15 minutes. oh yeah. and when it finally gets down to 1 minute, and then «ARRIVING»… it’s not. never is after 6pm so i stopped counting on it.
one redeeming factor is that the evening buses (when they come) are usually the newer ones with red/​blue seats and lots of room inside. 48 drives on some narrow streets and neighborhoods and avoids big major streets… so it’s one of those gas buses and Not one of the reliable electric buses that’s attached to the wire above the streets.
if you want to arrive at your destination promptly, take another line or a taxi.

Updated to 3-​stars for the bus driver today. He was on time, friendly and got through the correct route quickly. What’s going on with MUNI? Are they cleaning up their act?

48-​You stop on the corner by my house. You would be so convenient if you didn’t arrive 2 minutes before me or 30 – 40 minutes after me. I’m either watching you drive away or cursing myself for trusting you to show up on time. Ah!
On the way home, one (big lady) driver doesn’t stop at the West Portal stop, skips stops, and makes up her own stops. What the hell is that? How about following the prescribed route dopey? I like my creativity in art, not bus-​driving. If you weren’t in the union, I’d fire you like a tech marketing manager during the dot com crash.

I live near the 48 and BART. I take BART most places and otherwise walk or ride my bike, but one day my boyfriend and I decided to go to Tower Market up through Diamond Hts. We thought we’d see what it was like to take the 48, walked over to 24^th St. and it was like the 48 was waiting for us. Tower Market was as expected ($ 20 strawberries with the stems still on, but I’ll save that for another review), and when we left, the 48 arrived within 60 seconds. Lucky I guess. I hesitate to screw up the ratings based on this one experience, but I’ll give it 4 stars for now and try riding the 48 again soon!

I have ridden most MUNI lines. There are ones that SMELL worse than the #48. The # 14 wins the stench title. The #48, however, is, hands down, the MOST unreliable line in the entire system. I no longer take it. The last three times that I attempted to do so, I had to hail a cab after 50 and 55 minutes in the first two cases. On third try, I determined to wait it out, and after I hr. & 10 minutes one finally toddled into view. When I asked the driver what the interval between buses was SUPPOSED to be she said, «I dunno», with an attitude.
I regularly travel an extra four miles via different buses to get to an address on Mission Street that I could access directly via the 48, but waiting for this bus is equivalent to wishing on a star.
A friend of mine who was on the «passenger advisory board» of MUNI said that it was MUNI policy NOT TO REPLACE drivers that didn’t show up for work. Ergo, the nonexistent service on the 48 is due to the fact that most of its drivers don’t show up on any given day. One can only wonder if the #48 is the midden of MUNI as the DPT is the midden of the City of San Francisco Civil Service. That is, any MUNI driver who is mentally ill or a substance abuser is assigned to the #48 since everyone hates the line already and he can do no more harm.

It almost seems unfair to rate a bus. Is any public transportation known for it’s efficiency? Maybe in Europe, right? Sweden or something? Japan? I don’t know.
I was skeptical of the 48, but I decided to give it a whirl. It leaves me two blocks closer to my work. First, I gotta say, this bus has quite a route. It runs from the Great Highway to the ghetto. It should be cut a little slack for that. It’s a long way for a little bus. My experience with the 48 has been the stretch from 24^th and Bryant to 3^rd Street. It’s not pretty, especially on a gloomy day. The first time I took it there was no waiting. It showed up like a dream. The last time I took it I waited 45 minutes, 45 long minutes. I can’t take anymore morning chances with the 48. I’m sorry, 48.

I have such a love/​hate relationship with you, 48. You’re never on time, you loop me through the über-​sketchy Pot Hill projects, and you smell like fermented…

No other bus shuttles me and my bicycle so conveniently over the gynormous mountainous Twin Peaks & etc. region that towers over the middle of the city. And the metro doesn’t allow bikes. So… thank you.

Why oh why did it take me so long sitting on the side of 17^th and Santiago (inbound) to find out that the bus doesn’t run the same route after 6 PM? Stupid Muni thinks theyr’e so smart when they find a fresh trick to pull on me. Well I’m smart, too — I’m Muni-​smart, dammit!

Damn you, 48, for never being anything close to timely. I know you’re of the MUNI family, and thus evidently exempt from a schedule, but consistently showing up more than 30 minutes late during the morning commute is unacceptable.
