History

Established in 1976.

Dr. Montessori was an Italian physician and educator. Born in 1870, she was the first woman to receive a medical degree at the University of Rome.

She developed her method of pre-school education over a forty-year period during which she observed children directly and worked with them personally. Dr. Montessori devoted her life to the education of children and is honored and respected throughout the world.

The Montessori Method has been used successfully with children all over the world. It is concerned with the development of each child as an individual.

The Montessori Method is based on the belief that:

* Children are to be respected as individuals. They are different from adults and they differ from each other.

* Children have a sensitivity and capacity for learning very different from that of adults.

* The first six years of life are the most important periods of growth.
