Mojo Theatre

This review is long overdue. Saw a production of Peter Papadopoulos’ fabulous end of the world play Last Love at the Mojo Theatre last spring. Very intimate theatre, which let’s you feel like you are part of the show. Great acting and sets. Would love to check out another of their shows the next time I am in SF. Always a good time at the Mojo Theatre.

Went to the closing night showing of Drowning Ophelia and it. was. AWESOMAZING!!!
This theater was teeny tiny with seating for about 50 – 60 people, but I loved how intimate the space was and how I could see every bit of emotion in the eyes and faces of the actors.
The place seems like its on the 2^nd floor of a school and my only complaints were:
1. The chairs were placed too close together. I had to sit with on guy’s butt up against my knees and another guy breathing and flipping around in my hair for 2 hrs.
2. The number of chairs in each row were odd numbers. Thus it seemed like couples had to split up since there were a good number of couples in the audience.
They did sell wine and beer at the beginning for suggested donations and were generous with their pour. That was a nice little touch. :)
Overall I thought it was a great production and loved this cool little treasure tucked away in the Mission. Will hopefully be back for more soon!

Is theatre alive in SF? I’ve had some serious doubts, but after catching the first two works in the trilogy «Love Gone Wrong at The End of The World», I’d say its an unqualified YEA! Both shows are packed with such a barrage of Incoming artillery that its best to see each show twice, and to see it sober (at least once). If you’re into minimalist theatre, this aint for you. I’ll leave the bunch at Mojo to explain what they’re gunning for. But my sense is a choreographed collision of 50’s television comedy by way of the absurd, grounded in a dark image of the American psyche in these the End Times.
The writing is a somewhat abstract (and often funny as hell) take on today’s modern idiom. What I appreciated the most was that, though there is an undercurrent of American-​consumerism-​run-​amok-​and-​just-​maybe nearing-​the-​cliffs, the work never falls to brow beating, but a cogent meaning lingers, like something nocturnal, beneath the bed, never quite rising to the fore.
A warning; in today’s hyper speed, feed-​me-​now climate, Mojo’s work will definitely challenge the impatient. My advice? Hang in there, the rewards are many.
