An unexpected treasure in the Inner Richmond. This is a unique space featuring amazing works by two hip jewelry designers. They make lots of organic pieces like peanut necklaces(my favorite!) and honey comb cast earrings. Quite exquisite. Even if you’re not in the market to buy anything, the shop is worth seeing.

Magic cabinet of curiosities, sparkly hidden treasures, past worlds that are half-hidden but reveal themselves slowly… all these phrases came into my mind when I attended a holiday party at Modern Relics. This is one of the most beautiful shops, and Alix Bluh, the proprietess and jewelry maker extraordinaire has create such a music box of an environment… The night I was there the festivities included all sorts of tea tastings, lovely little snacks of sweets and savories all presented on vintage china. This, as well as being a way to create a convivial shopping experience, also served to showcase other talented folks as well(true generosity…). Lots of vintage vitrines filled with Alix’s visions… the jewelry has a real sense of history and totemic symbolism… lots of references to the Victorian era as well as some more modern interpretations. The evening was twinkly-y and glorious and I found myself wishing for so many things in this shop… I got very lucky, indeed. My sons and husband somehow managed to be very sneaky and I received my all-time favorite necklace the next morning(my birthday)…beautifully wrapped in a tiny linen envelope bag. I am scrimping and saving and even working extra shifts to buy myself another piece of this jewelry(and that’s saying something since i do not especially care to spend my extra days off inside the hospital where I work!!)…and it’s all worth it! Go and see for yourself… I don’t know the hours, but if you call, I am pretty certain something could be arranged. This is a place where you cannot just pop in quickly… take your time, and your wallet and do not expect to pick up a «little something» for your new outfit. These pieces are for a life-time and require some time, and, I think you will be really happy with the financial and temporal investment.

Update: I passed by today and noticed gallery hours posted. Yipeee!!! Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays noon — 7pm. Seeing as the hours were written on a chalkboard they may change so I would recommend going by while the hours are known. If you visit the website you can subscribe to the email list. I am thinking this is probably the best way to stay apprised of the open hours. — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — — – My rating is actually 4 ¾ stars. The jewelry is beautiful, but the windowpane prohibits me from taking a closer look. Quick get a calligraphy pen and scribe a sign with the hours for the window. This store is one of those hidden treasures that you miss if you zip by in a car, instead of strolling through the neighborhood.
