I was recommended by a friend and I needed my nails done for my wedding. I wanted something simple and classy and that was what I got. Janet did my nails and I love the cute little bow she added for me. The price was reasonable considering how much time and rhinestone that was put on my nails. Janet was very professional and talkative. I had acrylic done with a French polish. Also she charge me $ 10 to remove them :)

This was my first time to cut my hair here. A male hairstylist helped me to get my long hair cut to the chin-​length. Only $ 16 and I got a $ 40 hair style. I would definitely come here again!

The hairdresser was super nice and talked me out of cutting ALL of my hair off. Super sweet and really well priced!

I was looking for place for make my nails. I asked for manicure but no color. The service is really terrible. The master (don’t know her name) cut my DRY !!! nails and said «I’m done» !!! I was shocked. The floor is dirty, mess is all around, the workers speak their language and laugh loud. Terrible place

Amy is amazing. That’s all you need to know about this place. Also, the prices are fantastic.

Five stars. No matter who cuts my hair here, it come out looking great. Good service and good people. It is worth a trip out into the busy sunset district.

Monica has cut my hair two times now, and I’m officially done going to overpriced salons. She takes her time on my thin, limp hair and manages to make it look good. Not only that, but both haircuts have grown out nicely. Additionally, at her prices, I have no guilt about getting my haircut every 6 weeks!

Had an abundance of split ends which caused my hair to be super nappy. Monica kept my hair length as I wanted and took her time.

I called in to make an appointment today and was notified that Amy retired just last week!!! Where do I go now?!

I got a great $ 16 haircut from Amy and have never been happier.
I’ve always had bad experiences with hairdressers who manage to make my hair so thin or literally never listen to what I want.
Amy actually LISTENS to what you want and will turn your hair into a miracle. Also, I thought she was just spraying water in my hair, but I think it was some kind of serum that made my hair soft and smell so good.
I will be returning back to her place for my next haircut! After 19 years, I think I finally found my official haircutter :)

I started going here because it’s in my neighborhood but more importantly because it was so highly recommended on Unilocal.
I have to say that Amy is just plain amazing. (I’m an Amy fan, but from going here over two years now, I would recommend any of their staff.) She is always accommodating, even when I show up unannounced without any kind of appointment (which is all too often). She takes her time and really makes sure the details are perfect. I’ve simply never had anyone be as detail-​oriented as she is with a haircut. I’m just a dude who always wants a fairly simple haircut, so I can’t speak to coloring or anything else that typically goes on in a hair salon. All I know is that Amy makes magic for me, even though I only speak, like, two words of Chinese (xie xiei!) and have limited vocabulary for telling even an English speaking hairstylist what I need. She just knows what needs done and does it – beautifully every time.
The price is crazy cheap. In fact, I think they should raise their prices because they offer huge value in a neighborhood that is saturated with lower-​quality salons. I tip 100% — often more. Seriously. She’s worth it. I suggest you do the same.

Second haircut by Amy and I will tell you that for $ 15 this typically $ 40/​haircut LA girl could not be more happy! YES. $ 15! For long hair! Count it!
The details:
I don’t speak a lick of Chinese, but I’ve had no problems communicating with Amy. Both times (as suggested) I did bring in a photo. Amy does speak fairly good English though and we even enjoyed a smattering of small talk this last time.
What impresses me is how much attention to detail Amy shows when cutting my hair. Though she is quick, it seems like she is very careful/​thorough.
And most importantly, both times I have loved the end result! I always fear coming out with a mullet or fob-​cut from these Asian places, but I’ve loved the clean, layered look I’ve gotten both times.

I’m going to make this quick as possible since I’m super excited with how my hair looks right now.
It’s pretty impossible to get a same day appointment in this city! I called so many places and read good reviews about this place and gave it a shot. I got in, Tom was busy, but he could fit me in for a quick haircut.
You see, I’ve been pretty spoiled with getting my hair done. My brother’s gf does my hair when I’m down south for almost nothing and also, one of my best friend’s mother does my hair, for like free. I moved to SF about 6 months ago and have no way of getting to them and I can NOT justify getting my hair and bangs trimmed for $ 50 +. I have LONG stick straight hair, easiest hair to do.
This place was AWESOME. Tom knows exactly what he’s doing and did not mess around. Most trims on my hair you can’t even tell the difference but this time, you can. My hair is STILL long but fullllll of body. My bangs are amazing and are actually cooperating with me. It’s usually the hard part about my hair ’cause straight hair +bangs= a cowlick that came out of nowhere!
Super thank you and I will more than likely be back for my next trim =D

Haircut OK, Color BAD BAD BAD.
I’ve gotten a hair cut by both Amy & Tony & they are both very good at cuts. I usually get a trim plus some layers & I’ve never really been disappointed on the haircut end. I have really long hair & my total came out to $ 17. VERY reasonable for the area!
However, I naively assumed that since they were good at haircuts, that they would be good at color. NOPE, I was wrong. I went to Tony for a full color. I pointed out the color I wanted from the color book — a dark ash blonde. What I got was a reddish ugly brown that resembled nothing of the color I pointed out. Moreover, he missed spots throughout my hair, including one very obvious spot in the front. He did a terrible job getting the roots, and he didn’t care to fix it or even mention that he made a mistake.
I had to go to another salon just to fix the damage done here. The other salon even said that it was not a professional coloring that was done to my hair & I agreed. I ended up spending more than three times the amount I wanted to spend just to fix my hair because I didn’t even want Tony touching my hair again.
I was a fan, but after that terrible, unprofessional, disgusting job, I will not be returning. It just goes to show they put no care into their work.

I had a hair dilemma! I’ve been coloring my hair on my own for about 4 years now but this time I got a color a tad too dark for my liking. I’m a medium brown kinda girl, even tho my natural hair color is black.
I actually used to get my hair colored by Amy at Modern Design Salon but as time went on, I figured I could color my hair by myself and it wouldn’t be anything fancy and it’d be cheaper so I stopped going.
Well, after the dilemma, I didn’t wanna damage my hair even more by mixing colors and all that so I had to seek out Amy and her skills again. I called for an apt and I got one the next morning. I arrived at 10:30am and waited about 15mins for Amy. She got right to it! Everything went great. I even enjoyed the massages she gives while she’s washing your hair. (Almost made me feel like going there once a week, just for that)! The whole process took about 2hrs, which wasn’t too bad. She even helped me feed the meter (since it is Irving and its hard to find no-​meter parking).
Price for color and hair cut: $ 58 + tip.
Overall, the experience was great! *thumbs up*

So…
I got my haircut today for CNY… and I have this dread of impending doom. It’s hard for me to comprehend: $ 21 (prior to tip) for a cut AND wash…
Walking out of there, I was quite pleased. I had a simple request:
–trim,
–redefine my long layers,
–and emphasize my long style bangs.
I’ve been waiting to go to NY to have my stylist there give me a cut but he bounces between NY, Tokyo, and London… needless to say, I was not able to catch him this month for CNY. I would have waited too but I opted to uphold the lucky tradition of cutting one’s hair prior to CNY for luck.
I haven’t washed my hair yet, I plan to… will it still look nice after? If for worse, I’ll re-​rate!
…$ 21… and I left satisfied as opposed to horrified…
Very thankfully, but nonetheless– weird…

Also, a comment on the hair washing:
I LOVE it when they scratch and massage my scalp. Initially, she did not, during the wash. But on the occasions she did, with my eyes closed, I’d emphasize the widest, teethless grin, that I hoped would have said: ‘Yes. Please do that. I like it. I like very much.‘
I guess I could have asked but it’s impolite in the Asian culture (and she is Asian) to ask an elder to do things. And so, every time my scalp was scratched, one can tell by looking at my face, #superpleased!purrrr. It was so good, I didn’t even care if others walked by with a judging glare thinking: #weirdo. It was a great system, I think she caught my drift because I got lots of scratching and massaging during the latter half of my wash ^_​_​_​^
Minor hiccups:
Some water got in my shirt, and on my face during the wash. It was lovely. Thank God it wasn’t shampoo, that would have stung.
During the cut, her grasp seldom missed my hair and got my face. #(small)ow. Least it wasn’t the blades!

When you walk by, you might consider busting out your smartphone to Unilocal again– it’s not chic, posh, nor fancy. It’s plain with white interiors… and you might second guess coming here. I’m glad I didn’t succumb to those second thoughts!
Washed my hair, looks great! The way she redefined my layers actually gave me MORE volume! And I didn’t even have to ask for it… love that :]

I always come here to find Amy. (: I’ve been going to her for so long, I barely let anyone else touch my hair. True story.
She’s not the fastest when she cuts your hair, but she’s very precise and everything. It doesn’t matter as long as I come out of the saloon with a satisfied haircut or coloring, right? lol. Always up for making sure your desired hairstyle suits your face and everything~
She did my hair for my senior prom a couple of years ago and it was probably the prettiest (ah, so corny) I felt in a very long time. ^_​^
I don’t know why I haven’t reviewed this place sooner. Hahaha.

The awkward moment when you walk in a new hair salon to get a haircut from someone new… yes, that dying feeling! Tony was the one who cut my hair. I wear glasses so, the moment I took off, I got super nervous! As he cut my hair. I just did not know how to react it.
Overall, I actually like my haircut. But, I just don’t like the awkward vibe when I walked in and when I was seated.

OK, I hate hairdressers. I don’t like getting fussed over, I like being in and out and the worst haircuts and colours of my life have been in the salons where I’ve been charged upwards of $ 150 for the privilege.
I figure I can walk out of a salon despairing over my hackjob haircut and colour I just paid a lot of money for (& then have to come in and get it fixed and sit in the chair AGAIN and it’s always awkward, ugh). OR… I can pay the least amount possible, just get my layers maintained and you know… maybe I’ll still hate it, but at least I didn’t pay a lot.
(note: my ex’s mother was a hairdresser and she showed me how to dye my own hair really well, so i don’t even pay for that anymore, except for the dye! and it looks EXACTLY the way i want it to… and very natural and soft)
Having said all that, I’d had my only really bad cheapie experience at a salon down the road back in June, so this time I hopped onto Unilocal to see who had the good reviews and I picked this place.
Amy cut my hair. She’s really nice and really listened (she speaks English) and did a great job. I asked for what I always do – layers all over, framing the face, please keep the length. I was in and out in about 30 minutes.
All up — $ 16!!! Yay!!! I tipped Amy $ 10, she deserved it.
