A hidden volcano of creativity in San Francisco. Art is alive, but you need to find it. Excellent variety of Art, from painting, photography, ceramics, mix media to plays. The Art at 744 Alabama st, is more to my liking then the place off Portrero. Check the website for open house, when you can investigate art for yourself.

If you love art, do not miss this 1st time event. We went to the Mission Open Studios at 2111 Mission(Blue Studios) last night for its opening reception. You know all of those buildings you pass on Mission while on the way to the bars? Well, here’s your chance to find out what’s going on inside — lots of amazing artwork and a hell of a lot of creativity. And one of the most meaningful ways to experience art is alongside the artist. All of the ones that we met were so open and nice, and while there were a lot of people there, we were able to really examine the artwork and find space to take a breather. I was impressed by the quantity of studios in the space, the scope of art offered, and the variety of mediums used. Price ranges varied, but if you are in the market for some new original art, I think you would be hard-pressed not to find something. There are some fun interactive pieces, and each section had a room with a selection from each artist, like a preview, so that you could get a flavor of what was to come. Even if you do not buy anything, enjoy this opportunity to see what the artists in our city are producing. It will get you talking, thinking, and feeling… and you’ll have plenty to discuss over dinner or drinks later. Do not miss Liz Hickock’s Palace of Fine Arts done in Jello — push the button — watch it wiggle! See it jiggle! This event takes place today and tomorrow, May 12 – 13, from 11am-6pm. For a full list of studio spaces, see Ann’s review below or visit the website. Printable map is very handy. It’s Mother’s Day weekend, so take your favorite Mom! :)
