Magic at the Rex

Extremely entertaining show, very talented magicians and great sense of humor. All my sons really enjoyed as well ages 9 – 13, highly recommend

We attended this magic show as a group of three families based largely on the terrific reviews. We were a mix of adults and children. While the show is geared to adults, the children were just thrilled and the performers allowed us to bring them. This is a small and intimate venue, seats about 25, with a very personalized show so each person is included in the feats. If you are expecting smoke and mirrors, this isn’t the show for you. It is a true slight of hand show by the first performer, and he’s excellent at his craft. The second is a theatrical magic show and to say much about it would be wrong, as we could spoil it. Amazing!!! Much laughter and awe. We didn’t realize the venue served food and so its important to note that they have a small but good menu offering mostly appetizers and desserts but it would be enough for a light dinner. Meatballs, Grilled cheese sandwich, fries, salads, cheese plates, apple tarts, etc… And an impressive list of cocktails and wines. There is a two item minimum in addition to a nominal performance fee. Great value in our opinion for this level of talent and show. This show is housed in the Hotel Rex and there is very easy and inexpensive parking at the Sutter Stockton garage. Everyone is still taking about both performances last night and wondering how they could have done what they did? We will definitely return, only if to have a closer look as to how they did the incredible surprises. We are all in awe of the talent! This is a perfect show for a group evening out for couples and just plain fun. It sells out quickly and we purchased our tickets in advance.

I’ve seen a lot of magic shows, and this one was great. Different than most, because the performers are as entertaining as the magic they perform.
This is not a «Vegas» type show. It is in a parlor that seats 20 people, which makes the show feel personal, as if they were doing a special performance created just for us.
Adam started the show with card magic. Truly mystifying. Great skill with the slight of hand.
Sebastian does mind-​reading, and «feats of physical skill.» I won’t spoil it for you, because you really should see it and be surprised. It is funny, unique and memorable.
They are two engaging performers who clearly enjoy performing for their audience. A great way to spend an evening.

I’m surprised by all of the 4 and 5 star reviews… maybe I caught the show on a bad night. The lighting and décor of the room didn’t set the stage for a magic show… way too bright and harsh. The seating was really uncomfortable, which is sort of a big deal if you’re sitting there for two hours. We have actually been to quite a few magic shows both in SF and in Las Vegas and we usually really enjoy them. This is the only magic show I’ve ever been to that I found boring. The performers lacked charisma and their tricks just weren’t interesting. I was really disappointed in the show.

So glad we were able to catch this very classy and fun performance! Great performers, and the up-​close atmosphere and participation made it a wonderfully memorable evening. Adam, Sebastian and David were entertaining, funny and excellent at their respective crafts. All 3 performances were truly magical, especially for my 8 year old daughter and her 10 year old friend. I was thoroughly mystified, and found myself laughing one minute and utterly bewildered the next. It’s wonderful to shake hands and interact with the performers, and know that you are not just seeing staged illusions or special effects. The venue was cozy, classy, the food was good, and featured excellent table service. This is an all-​around must-​see, and is quite a bargain compared to other entertainment options. You can’t get this kind of experience at a theater or the movies… and compared to getting packed in to see a far more expensive performance, this is much more meaningful. Take someone special to see this and you won’t be disappointed!

Great show by great magicians and hosts. You get seated in the order that you sign in, but when they saw people with small children, they made sure to get them a spot where the kids could see.
Sadly though, there will not be «Magic at the Rex» next year. The space they’re using for their show will be remodeled into a Tyler Florence restaurant, so they’ll be performing at another venue for 2012.

This magic show is fantastic and is absolutely worth the $ 25 cost ($ 12.50 on Gold Star). All three magicians are talented and funny. I’m a huge fan of magic shows, such as Penn and Teller, and yet these guys still surprised me with their tricks.
I did have a slight issue using a Facebook deal I bought, but it was quickly resolved.
See them before they they leave the Rex at the end of December (2011). Seriously, hurry! GO NOW!

The show starts at sharp 8, and its for 2 hours. Reach 30 mins early as seats are alotted on first come basis. Come early to give your name at the door to get a seat in the 1^st row for closer look. Grab a drink at the bar/​lounge of the hotel and move in for the show.
The show is held in an intimate setting, for a group of around 25 people. Donot expect anything fancy here, but guaranteed entertainment full ON. A great way to spend an evening in some fun and laughter with friends or family. The tricks were entertaining and interactive, with a pinch of comedy. RJ Owens was damn funny! Enjoyed the moment, and the magic definitely made us wear our thinking hats!

Mr. Boswell and Mr. Owens were funny from the get-​go! The close-​up magic tricks they performed seemed simple but will astonish you and have you scratching your head for the rest of the night. The «mind reading» was my favorite. The magic show is in a small, intimate room that seats about 30 people at Hotel Rex, a venue that reminds me of the lobby of the tower of terror in disneyland. The show lasted about 1.5 hours and involved a lot of audience interaction. Even in last row, you’re still only about 10 feet away from the performer.
Parking is hard to come by so it’s best to take BART to Powell and walk 10 minutes to the venue. The 2 drink minimum is not enforced, but buy your drinks before the show as there is no table service in the room. Sign-​in early to get front row seats.
The show will make you laugh, keep you in suspense, and completely perplex you. At only $ 13 brought from Goldstar, it was a very affordable and entertaining show!

For $ 13, I enjoyed myself at this magic show! The two performers were amazing with card, coin, mind, and rope tricks! It was a very intimate setting, about 30 – 40 people in the audience with a small desk in the front where they performed. There was a lot of audience participation & we were literally sitting about 10 feet away from the magician.
I gave it one star less because I think there was suppose to be a third performer but they mentioned to us that he caught the flu, so the show got cut short about 45 mins. I believe it was suppose to end at 10pm, but it ended at 9:15pm.

This show was enjoyed by 2 adults, their teenagers (15 and 16), and a non-​native English speaker. It’s refreshing to be entertained by 3 pros in a cozy setting. You can gracefully decide not to participate but audience involvement is a part of the charm of this unique SF experience.

Based in part on Unilocal reviews, took my family (wife and adult children). Had a blast. The close-​up magic and illusions are top notch plus the guys had fun styles. Lots of laughing and oohs and aahs. Great value for the money. At ninety minutes with three different performers the pacing is great. Just loved it. We paid full price ($ 25) and thought it was well worth it. Found out later that Goldstar sells tickets for $ 12.50 and that is a no-​brainer. Really hard to find that kind of entertainment at either price.

Saw someone mention this in my FB feed, and after checking Unilocal reviews decided to check it out. It was a lot of fun! I like close up magic (and this is definitely close up — everyone was first or second row, and no more than 20 people in the whole audience) because sometimes you have some shot at figuring out how they do it. It’s definitely not smoke and mirrors, it’s sleight of hand and misdirection and general cleverness.
Three performers each put on a 30 minute show, so there is variety to it. My favorite was the «mind reading» which was quite remarkable, and no less so for the magician telling you that he did it through reading microexpressions.
A great date night

We were looking for something to do on a Saturday night, and I accidentally found out about this show. There were three performers, two were magicians and one was more of a mentalist. But all three had a good sense of humor and amazed the audience.
There were a couple of tricks that I thought were a little too basic, but overall we had a blast. One cool thing was that the show wasn’t too long (about 90 minutes) so it had more oomph and power. Another cool thing was that they customized the show a bit to the audience; there were a few kids there, so I think they kept it a little cleaner for their benefit (except for one mild joke about prostitution).
Compared to the big Vegas magic show I went to years ago, this was much more fun. The performers were literally just a few feet away, and it felt intimate. As I said, we had a blast.

This is a small intimate venue show with three performers who in turn do close-​up magic. Attendees sit gathered closely around the performer with a fair amount of audience participation. The performers have good chemistry, and are quite enjoyable to see. This is the opposite of the big flashy Vegas production and quite to my liking especially given the reasonable admission price that you can buy online. It’s a nice cute and entertaining hour and a half that I would recommend to anyone.
