I called and MacMurray delivered! I was on the phone with Ted and sent him a picture of the hinge I was looking for. He asked me a few questions and I sent him more pictures. He said they had it in stock, I went to pick it up and was in and out in about 3 minutes! Their service is GREAT, and even though they are a wholesaler, they served me, just a local running mom. Sooooo easy to work with and makes dealing with hinges so much more pleasant!

Not being a professional cabinetmaker, I was a bit hesitant to contact this company near the end of the day with a small order for just a handful of hard-to-find cabinetry bulbs. Nonetheless, each representative I spoke with was informative and professional, and, to top it all off, fired off the delivery for arrival the very next day – which, I should add, arrived in perfect order. It’s a reminder that dealing with actual persons, or at least their voices, is a delightful antidote to the impersonal experience of dealing with big-box online retailers.

This is where I go for specialty hinges that aren’t so common. I typically am only buying 2, so there’s a $ 5 service charge. Even IF Home Depot or Lowes carried the hinge I needed, the time it takes to drive out there costs way more than $ 5 dollars. So far they’ve had everything that I’ve needed in stock and I haven’t seen a sales associate root through the catalog with a furrowed brow once… they know their products. For what I need – 2 specialty hinges right away – MacMurray Pacific is a life saver.

As a cabinetmaker in San Francisco, I spend quite a lot of time here. Though I would often prefer to give it several fewer stars, I need it as a resource. MacMurray Pacific sells hardware and tools for contractors and cabinetmakers, though they will sell to anyone, as far as I can tell. I believe you’re supposed to set up an account with them first, but I’ve seen many crusty homeowners with some broken, obscure hinge trying to get help there. If you set up an account, you get a huge catalog from which you can call in your orders. You need to have a related business to set up an account. Account or not, all orders are $ 50 minimum or they will charge a $ 5 service fee, which is generally worth it. The place is set up in an old timey fashion. That means they have an order/will call desk and a large, stuffed warehouse that you will never see. They have catalogs provided at the desk for you to figure out what they have. They are chronically understaffed at the will call desk, so bring some reading material. They have a very bad reputation for impatient and rude staff at the will call desk, though this hasn’t been a problem in a while. Their politeness may just be because I’m familiar and I know what I want and how they work. The variety and prices are really good. Prices get much better with volume. If you don’t want to deal will the bull and don’t mind paying a little more, a lot of hardware stores(like Center and Discount Builder’s, but many other’s as well) buy a lot of hardware through them and can do special order’s for you. Their catalog is online: . If you have them ship to you, you can avoid a lot of the hassle. Keep in mind that the prices in the catalog are suggested retail prices and not likely what you will pay.
