Solid, freshly made salads and sandwiches. Deli meats are freshly sliced and high quality. You fill out a paper order form, pay, and wait. No indoor seating, literally a hole in the wall small stand inside. I usually get my order to go but there’s outdoor tables. They have a few house sandwiches and salads to select from and option to choose your own adventure in the form by selecting custom ingredients. The service has been quietly friendly and mellow. Food has been consistently great: T-Shank Chicken Salad — cabbage slaw salad with peanuts is one of the best salads in SF. It’s hearty without being heavy, has a little but of crunch to it and just the right macros of protein, fats, and carbs for a filling lunch. Last time asked if they do lettuce wrap sandwiches instead of bread and the cashier said any of the sandwiches could be turned into a salad which opens up more low carb options(aspirational New Years resolutions anyone?). Roaster as a salad — solid club sandwich with turkey, thick sliced bacon, and fresh avocado Parsaxle — delicious not too fatty and not dry pastrami, broccoli rabe and lime mix a little bitter, cabbage with provolone cheese The downside is it’s a small operation so wait time is stochastic. The line moves quick but getting your food can take a while because it seems they only have one slicer. Not great if you’re looking for truly grab and go. Sometimes I’ve waited 10 mins, averaging 15 mins or so, once my group of 5 friends waited over 40 mins in which they forgot one of our orders. Overall quality food that’s differentiated enough at the price point and area and good lunch option if you want to avoid the Westfield mall or Metreon during convention rush time. If the wait time were faster and more reliable, this would easily be a 4.

Truly the best coffee spot on the block — because they’re the only one. Even if they weren’t, I love the convenience of Machine(close enough to the Powell BART, and a stumble from the WeWork around the corner). The fact that they’re there means I can score a smooth espresso without any frou-frou fanciness. If you’re hungry, they sport a deli menu of sandwichy delights. Credit accepted. Wish they were open later Saturdays(they close at 3pm, as of this post).

I ordered the Jigsaw sandwich, it took 15 minutes to make, I asked for no jalapeños. there were jalapeños in the sandwich grrrrr… It also wasn’t that good! The woman behind the counter, short hair, WAS not friendly at all. I asked how much longer for my sando. she was rude… I won’t come back!

Pretty good coffee and nice baristas. I really, really love their breakfast sandwich. It’s a tasty egg, bacon, croissant creation with this sweet apple jam that totally nails the savory sweet balance. So good, but coffee and a sandwich can easily set you back $ 15 when all is said and done. Pretty nice occasional treat, though.

Really gone downhill, which is unfortunate because I live across the street. Don’t order the food, especially anything breakfast. I overheard them say to the kitchen«no the breakfast sandwich, you know how to make that right». I’m finding out that because Homeskillet and others have come into the area, the general strategy of Machine/Show Dogs has been away from the breakfast space. They should just scuddle the rest of their breakfast menu. Sandwiches are ok, the dogs next door are really stellar, but I really gotta just recommend steering clear of the food on the Machine side. The coffee is excellent(it’s Four Barrell) and the pastries are good.

Nice little spot! Yummy coffee and sandwiches. The people who work there were very friendly, good service. My sandwich was made really fast– not a long wait.

I’ve been coming here once in a while since they opened. I like to treat myself to the chai which they make in-house. It’s perfectly spicy. The sandwiches are also really good and service is pretty fast. Every employee I’ve encountered has been sweet and helpful. I’m not sure how they stay so friendly and polite when there are so many d-bags in this neighborhood!

They also brew four barrel coffee, and four barrel could learn something from them about how to make a great cup.

Ended up going to this place last minute… Almost didn’t see it due to the understated entry and signage. Anyway, I am glad that I accidentally stumbled upon this place because I really enjoyed the latte and sandwich i had. The latte was very smooth — espresso was not bitter or burned and palate-pleasing. I probably could’ve had a gallon of it. The sandwich was unusual but delicious: egg, bacon, arugula, chutney and… wait for it… Pickle! All surrounded by a lovely ciabatta roll. Loved the flavor. I can’t even imagine how lunch tastes!

Loved my CrankShaft tuna sammie on Dutch Crunch, warm, savory & delicious, I’m going back for more tomorrow. Takes a little longer than I’d like, but I hope it’s because my sammie is hand crafted and made with care. Seriously good food! EATHERE! Plus they are known for coffees & teas. But the food is mmmmm, mmmmmm good! But no housemate chips, not sure why. Are they not for to go orders? I wanted to try them so badly. Enjoy!

Although I may not be as enamored with their short cappuccino as I once was, I am still an avid fan of their breakfast sandwich(extra spicy of course) or Brekkie as they call it. The deli meat and accompanying cheese for this sandwich may vary day to day, but it always includes an egg and is served in a wonderfully toasted bread. It is also a pretty nice way to start off the morning. On a side note(and which has no bearing on the review of the food whatsoever), my most recent visit was met with a level of indifference I hadn’t experienced here before. Even as I thanked them when leaving, I was met with the deafening sounds of crickets chirping. This new approach to treating customers is refreshing and rather daring. Forget notions of amicable interaction or fostering positive associations(who likes that kinda stuff anyways?). Why not try adhering to being cold and aloof as the cornerstones of your business model instead? Others places aren’t smart enough to utilize this strategy but Machine is and I’m pretty sure it’ll have folks lining out the door because of it. So let me be the first to wish them the best of luck with this course of action. As for you other rapidly encroaching coffee establishments on Market, do not attempt to replicate what Machine is doing. There is no possible way you will ever find the kind of personnel as adept at being devoid of common courtesy than those already working at Machine. burn?

It was Monday morning and just came off work, I saw this coffee shop along Market street between 6th and 7th. Don’t wink when you pass cause you will miss it. It’s a hole in a wall kinda but it has some high chairs outside. I ordered latte $ 4.5 and a raisin swirl pastry bread $ 4. I can buy those in safeway for 5 a box! Unbelievable! I can’t even taste an espresso on my latte it’s like an instant coffee poured over a steamed milk.

This place has all of the qualities of a truly great, hipster establishment. Mustaches, edison lightbulbs, the slight smirk of the barista’s upper lip as they say«we make it in house.» when you ask where they get their almond milk.(Which is extremely tasty and VERY almondy). They also have delicious coffee.

This place makes the best espresso drinks within a quick walk from the Hastings law school. I’ve only tried their cooked food once. I recall thinking that they needed a larger container for their toast. I want to try more of their cooked food. Their pastry selection usually doesn’t strike my fancy. These guys are also good, because they let you know if they think it will take a long time to make your order(because of lines, etc.), and I appreciate that honesty and respect for my time.

Machine Coffee has an unassuming storefront. It’s located next to Show Dogs — and if you are not paying attention, you can easily miss it. There is no seating inside, but there is standing room out front. They have a small breakfast menu(toasted bread, oatmeal, or a breakfast sandwich). They serve Four Barrel coffee and make a solid latte. The breakfast sandwich changes daily — when I visited it came with a fried egg, prosciutto, and jalapenos — it was filling and delicious. They also have a lunch menu — lots of sandwich options for you to choose from. All around, this is a welcome addition to this part of Market and I plan on going back.

Honestly, I have absolutely no idea how this place could possible have a 4-star rating. I worked several food-service jobs when I was in college, including a long-term position at a juice bar, so I know quite a bit about customer service at this type of establishment. I work fairly close to Machine and went in the other day before work. I was debating walking a few extra blocks to Philz but decided to give the closer place a try– I had never been and I was curious. They open at 8, which in my opinion is late for a coffee place, but whatever, I got there a few minutes before 8 and waited for the place to open. Upon entering, I was greeted with a grunt from the guy behind the counter. I ordered a latte. Almond milk costs 50 cents extra which always annoys me, it doesn’t cost any more than soy or regular milk to purchase. Whatever. I pay. he makes my coffee. He hands me my coffee, and I say thank you. All without him saying a single thing to me. No «Good morning», no «What are your plans for the weekend?», nothing. When I pay $ 5 for a coffee, I expect to be acknowledged and spoken to, but apparently not at this place. Like I said, I have worked in a juice bar and I would NEVER just grunt at someone who I was serving. on top of everything, the coffee tasted terrible. Had it not been for the terrible customer service, I would still not come back because of how bad the coffee was. Next time, I will definitely walk the few extra blocks to Philz or Blue Bottle for a decent cup of coffee and less hipster I’m-too-cool-to-be-here attitude.

Yes, I went to Machine Coffee & only had a tuna sandwich. Why, you might ask? Well, I saw the Crankshaft on 7×7’s Big Eats 2013, I was in the area, it was just about lunchtime and thought«why not»? And let me tell you, this was quite possibly the best tuna sandwich I’ve ever had. The bread was buttery & toasted to perfection. The tuna was creamy yet light. Capers tend to be too salty for my liking but this was not the case. The pickles weren’t too briny, added a nice texture to the sandwich. The sticky buns did look deliciously tempting and this not-too-much-into-coffee-unless-it’s-creamy-and-sweet-drinker found the coffee descriptions rather intriguing.

The Crankshaft Tuna Melt– #61 on the 20137×7100 Things to Eat Before You Die list. Although Machine Coffee & Deli is open on the weekends, the last time I called in a few months ago they only served food on the weekdays. So I managed to trek up to the city on a Friday to try out The Crankshaft(Albacore Tuna Melt, House PIckles, Capers, White Cheddar, Served w/Housemade Chips, $ 10, ), and I’m glad I did! The sandwich was delicious, and I’m not usually a fan of tuna melts. The bread was nice and crunchy, and stood up well to the tuna melt, which wasn’t fishy tasting at all. I also liked the addition of capers, which gave the sandwich a nice pop of flavor. The housemade potato chips were also really good, and nice and crunchy. I called in my order for pick-up, and it was ready after 10 – 15 minutes. There is no seating inside so strictly a to-go place. It took us a little while to find Machine Coffee since it’s a small storefront, but look for the stand up sign with the arrow in front of their entrance. The only negative about coming here is that there are a good amount of hobos and sketchy looking people along this stretch of Market, but I wouldn’t let that deter me from the delicious sandwiches from Machine Coffee & Deli. They also serve Four Barrel coffee, so this is a great place to stop by for an caffeine fix as well. There is no parking on Market Street, so you’ll have to try and find street parking a couple of blocks away and walk over.
