Dear Starbucks: La Boulange was always such a wonderful place to go – delicious pastries, hot chocolate in a bowl, kind and attentive workers, lovely free samples, great prices in an otherwise offensively expensive city, and food I loved to eat in or take out on city strolls or picnics. Then YOU bought it. Within a few years you managed to desperately f*** it up. I don’t know how you corrupted their pastries so that they tasted like burned rubber, but could you blame anyone for not wanting to buy them? Then, like a spoiled child with a toy it can’t figure out how to play with, you decided to break it and throw it away. You couldn’t strategize and change gears so as to make it work? You just decided to heave your massive corporate bulk at the place and waited until it smashed? I held out a bit of hope when speaking to the employees at Boulange, who told me you were in dialogue with the bakery’s owners and there was a chance that Boulange would survive(though it would no longer be offered at your stores). But somehow that opportunity also fell through, and now Boulanges are closed all over the city. Starbucks, you’re a nasty corporate bully. You’re the kind of place that makes America look bad, that makes other countries shake their heads at our economic system and policies and wonder why we put up with this kind of thing and think it’s normal. RIP, Boulange. I’ll miss you.

Dommage !

I love this brunch place especially this location because it is very central to stop in and out before work! It is pretty sad that Starbucks is closing all the La Boulange locations soon. For a site down hot item I would get the Omelete de Paris its a simple dish that comes with greens, potatoes or fruit. The vibe is very European, very spacious interior but there is sidewalk seating and tables where you can people watch while you enjoy your breakfast. The menu has a wide selection of breakfast and brunch plates from omeletes, open face sandwiches, quiches, different pastries and the best part its not like the other famous brunch places in the city where you will be waiting for an hour until you get a table. I hope Starbucks doesn’t close La Boulange! I would check this place out if you’re looking for a quick breakfast with a lively ambiance.

A common theme that resonated throughout our brunch was«Man, it is truly such a tragedy that Starbucks is closing La Boulange locations!» …this stark reality is holding true through my review as well. La Boulange is such a great local San Francisco chain. The European café vibe shines through at every location. The Sutter Street location upholds the true café ambiance with quaint sidewalk seating and café tables inside among tall, airy ceilings. The menu contains breakfast and brunch plates, fresh fruit, and of course the array of pastries displayed among the display cases. I opted for a veggie quiche-tart. The order taker asked if I wanted it warmed and I agreed that it would enhance the veggie flavors. I paired it with a house drip coffee, which was drank out of the signature bowl(rather than a traditional mug). The warmed quiche-tart arrived quickly and totally satisfied my light brunch craving! Other delicious items ordered at my table: bowl of oatmeal with syrup and fruit, egg sandwich with fresh fruit, and a mini skinny baguette sandwich. The entire table was more than satisfied with their orders. I sincerely hope that Starbucks reconsiders their decision to close La Boulange cafes. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!!! I will continue to be a loyal La Boulange fan for as long as possible.

I wanted to stop here because I get their sandwiches at Starbucks all the time. I was a little sad that their Starbucks line wasn’t sold here(but then I could just go to Starbucks to get those!) so I got the Omelette de Paris with egg whites which was delicious. Be sure to get the apricot jam to put on the bread too, so yummy. Seating is a little uncomfortable, but you won’t be here for hours. Order. Eat. Leave.

I was sad to hear that Starbucks will soon be closing all the«La Boulange» cafes in the Bay Area. While I must admit I’m not an extreme regular, I’ve always enjoyed grabbing my breakfast here. This morning, for instance, I grabbed a Ratatouille Croissant as well as a Chocolate Hazelnut Croissant. Both were very tasty and the pastry crumbled just like a croissant should. I’ll continue to come here until they close as they clearly make some very tasty pastries.

Perfect for: meeting with friends, working away from office, morning/afternoon treats. Café au lait comes in a bowl, so you have to hold them with both hands with full attention to the coffee. Lemon turnover was delicious and custard-y, didn’t have the lard taste that lemon tarts sometimes has. There is a self-service jam/condiment bar for your baguettes as well.

I dig the La Boulange chain. Wherever I am in the city, I can count on getting their delicious pain au chocolat or my favorite smoked trout salad. This place is cavernous! A rarity for a La Boulange location. If you wanted to just chill and read a book, you won’t find quiet time here. Sit and sip your fresh squeezed lemonade while people watching instead.

I’ve been a somewhat regular since the location opened, but I haven’t been for lunch in about 6 months. Let me start with the positive, the staff is great! Really nice, personable people who are a pleasure to deal with first thing in the morning. The coffee is always fresh and hot. Popped in for lunch this afternoon, and it was a major disappointment. Regretfully I didn’t take a picture. Ordered the open faced grilled sandwich, which has been recently modified. In a good way. The only positive that with 3 sandwich sections, it’s still a lot of sandwich for the price, but the slices look so dinky that they would be much better off consolidating to 2. While I’m not behind the scenes, it would appear that they are defrosting flavorless boneless chicken tenders on a piece of bread, blow torching a piece of cheese on top and calling it a day. The measly slices of bacon don’t really help the situation. The whole thing looks like they are skimping on the ingredients and I know they can do better than that. They’ve got Starbucks money backing them and the stock is up. Would recommend for coffee or a pastry, but skip for lunch.

What I thought would be a seamless online order and pickup turned out to me a disappointment. I ordered breakfast for a small group. Unfortunately, when I went to go pick up my order in the morning, I was informed that their computer systems were down and they couldn’t look up any online orders. I was in a time crunch as I was picking up breakfast for a meeting and asked them to deliver to my office. Since they couldn’t look up my order, I had to sit down with a worker and have him write down my entire order… Luckily they didn’t take super long to deliver the food. However, the food was cold and they messed up some of our items. On top of that, they didn’t include utensils and napkins.

Best place for a complete and healthy breakfast. Delicious bread, fresh fruit, pastries, very good espresso and hot chocolate… Everything looks so good! You can add milk, oil, jam, etc. to your order as many times as you want and the staff is extremely nice and professional. Outstanding business!

So this place is owned by Starbucks now, huh? Well you wouldn’t necessarily know, because the food is freaking awesome. The roasted veggie tart and ham and cheese croissant were some of the best pastries I’ve had in the city. I also liked how they upsell a side salad for $ 2 to accompany the rich, savory pastries. The 3 stars comes from the fact that I was largely underwhelmed by the coffee– I don’t think a French Roast should be the default brew if you order a drip. It was really strong and acidic. Thanks Starbucks. Love the complimentary olives and cornichon, and the vast milk selection.

I’m glad I waited to write a review for this place. I work close by and purchase breakfast here 2 – 3 times a week; sort of hooked on their quiche. The last 2 previous times I’ve ordered my quiche it was slightly burnt mainly around the edges of the crust; so it was still all right. But this time is was badly burnt. I’m not sure if the cooking staff has something against me but damn — three times here is definitely not the charm. The counter people are always nice and friendly but when the folks who cook/heat up the food call out customer’s names they never seem happy! So check your orders before you leave!

The way into my heart is a box of Canneles de Bordeaux!!! This review is reserved just for it. This is the ONLY place in the US I will eat this pastry. And you best believe I will fly to France to eat this too. It’s sweet, thick, and heavenly. Yes, it’s ugly but don’t judge it by it’s looks. The putter layer us lightly coated with bees wax, can go barely undetected. The inside is this dense yet fluffy consistency of sweetness. Ohmy! Its hard to make so i will be fine paying $ 1.75. I’m a super good chef but I am a crappy baker. One Christmas someone gave me a 4-set of Mauviel M’Passion Cooper molds to attempt to make them. It’s the«Gucci» of cook ware. I secretly wanted to cry with happiness when I had unwrapped the gift. I love this pastry so much I had done extensive research how to make them. That’s how much I LOVE this pastry. Will I be back? Must have at least once a week. JABAAPPROVED. Until the next review…

Wonderful little place with great soup! And lots of other tasty treats. Today I ordered a bowl of French Onion Soup that was very nice. Lots of onions in every spoonful, and a pleasant, dark brown broth. It was a little bit sour, which was nice, but needed to be heated up. So the kitchen took it back, no problem, and brought it back in a few minutes steaming hot. From the looks of things around me, the non-soup food here is fresh and healthy. The prices are reasonable given the location. I’ll come back!

My roasted turkey sandwich with a side was $ 8.95, and it was ok for the price. I chose the onion soup. The open-face sandwich included turkey, melted provolone, tomato, and aioli on peasant bread. This café is walking distance of the Grand Hyatt Union square, and there are enough chairs inside for at least 50 people. They serve salads, sandwiches, and soups. If you are nearby, give them a try. Kids menu is $ 4.50 or less. $ 7.50 gets you a half open faced sammy and cup of soup or salad. Coffee and espresso? Of course. But we have free espresso at our hotel.

Beautiful interior, with high ceilings and wooden furniture. PLENTY of work space, though not that many outlets so bring your books and writings. Love the mini chicken arugula baguette sandwich, their macarons(specifically this location, it is cheaper!), and quaint lattes served in a bowl :-)
