Kohler & Chase Building

Most people probably never notice this building but sitting across the street today at Café Madeleine I spent some time looking up at it and noticing the very cool architecture and the variety of design motifs on the façade.
A little googling reveals that this now somewhat faded ten-​story building once housed the famous Kohler & Chase Music Store – considered to be the largest and best music store in the West and to have the finest collection of musical instruments in the country.
Andrew Kohler established his first music store in San Francisco in 1850 and a few years later took on his nephew Quincy A. Chase as a partner and the pair became very successful in the music business. Kohler & Chase moved here sometime after the 1906 earthquake and fire.
Hopefully someone will recognize how cool this old place is and will restore it.
