History

Established in 2004.

A lifelong resident of San Francisco, Dr. Growney launched his practice in 2004 after graduating from the University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. Since then, he has maintained two locations — one in the Marina and one downtown — where he loves meeting new patients and providing exceptional and friendly care to all who see him.

Born and raised in San Francisco, I attended St. Ignatius before beginning my undergraduate studies at UC Davis where I majored in Neurobiology, Physiology, and Behavior. Soon after I graduated from Davis, I moved back to San Francisco to attend The University of the Pacific School of Dentistry. After attaining my Doctor of Dental Surgery degree it seemed natural to start my practice in my hometown of San Francisco and follow in the proud tradition of my uncle and grandfather.

I wouldn’t hesitate for a second to recommend Dr. Growney to anyone. He’s professional, informative, funny, and immensely helpful. I came in mildly freaked out because of a chipped tooth. He took care of it in a matter of minutes, warning me that the filling won’t completely blend in. I had no idea what he was talking about after he was done. It looked GREAT! He also pointed out another chipped tooth which I’d ignored for a very long time. Seeing how quickly he did this one, I went ahead and agreed to an appointment to fix up the older chip. I got an appointment the following day (amazing!). He also gave me a price estimate on the spot so I could make a decision before agreeing to anything which I really appreciated.

Dr. Growney took me in without an appointment due to my circumstances (pain) and took great care of me immediately and remedied the problem. He did an amazing job, painless and very smooth. I had a root canal and from what I’ve heard they are not too fun, but he made it easy and I’m not at all nervous to have dental work done, because of his care. Can’t say enough about him!

I’ve been sent to Dr. Growney while my dentist is on maternity leave. We are in the middle of a treatment and I have been more than happy so far. A really nice guy with a great chairside manner. He works fast, answers questions thoroughly, and is an overall fab dentist. I would recommend him to anyone looking for a new dentist!

Dr. Growney is amazing! I came in 2 weeks before my wedding, so stressed out, with the intention of getting the bonding on my front 2 teeth redone and he took one look at me and said «take a deep breath and calm down.» He proceeded to polish them therefore making them whiter in the process without having to do anything unnecessary. He’s super friendly and tells it like it is which for me is very reassuring. Thank you!

Dr. Growney is a terrific dentist and his team is absolutely fantastic. I’ve been seeing him for years and he always takes the time to talk with me about what’s going on (with my teeth and life) and he makes sure that m teeth are taken care of, truly. He’s helped me with some tooth pain that was ongoing and I’m pleased to say, after working with him, it is now gone. Dr. Growney & his team are just the best. Even after I moved to Marin, I wouldn’t think of changing going to see Dr. Growney– I have a clean and sparkly smile ear to ear. :)

I rarely write reviews however Dr. Growney and his team deserve all 5 stars. I have been a patient at the Franklin office for nearly a decade and I have only had good experiences. I have never been kept waiting, and the staff are very pleasant and knowledgeable.
Dr. Growney is fantastic. Very knowledgeable and caring. He is super down to earth and personable. I had an emergency once and they worked me into the schedule at the second location. It was really busy and Dr. Growney ended up greeting me in the waiting room and showed me to chair. He explained that the staff were really busy and he didn’t want me to wait or to get behind in his schedule. He even walked me to the reception desk after we were done and called the next patient. He is just a great guy. If he is on your insurance plan this is the dentist you should see.

Dr. Growney and his staff always take great care of me. His dental assistant Linda remembers what we talked about 6 months prior! and is always professional and courteous. Dr. Growney gave me a crown that I never notice and never bothers me. It matches the color of my teeth and no one would ever notice it. His billing office called to get my new insurance information and followed-​up with me. Great office all around!

I almost never write Unilocal reviews, but Dr. Growney and his team is so great that I felt I should. They are always on time — I’ve never been kept waiting in two years as a patient. They’re thorough yet efficient, getting you out the door in a timely manner but not sacrificing service. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a dentist in SF!

I had my first visit with Dr. Growney this past week and it was nothing short of amazing. From the moment I walked through the door, I was treated like royalty. Jeannine in the front office greeted me with a big smile. The pre-​visit paperwork was straight forward. Jenna, the dental hygienist, was incredible. It was obvious both Jeannine and Jenna love their job and loved working there, based on the super friendly, quality service. Finally, Dr. Growney himself was great. Friendly and easy going, but professional and very thorough. All in all, this was by far one of the best dental experiences I’ve had. I’d highly recommend Dr. Growney and his staff for your dental needs!

Dr. Growney is always very careful to make sure all is well during procedures. Plus he doesn’t make fun of the fact I’m a lousy dental patient and need laughing gas in order to not climb the walls. :-) Good experiences every time I’ve seen him over the last few years, and worth the drive/​trip to the new office down on Franklin! The rest of the staff is also great.

He was incredibly rude to his assistant, disrespectful and demeaning. He was also very rude to me and basically swatted me when I was trying to get his attention when he was doing a filling. He was easily frustrated and unreassuring when there seemed to be complications in the midst of the fillings, in turn making me feel very uneasy. I would not recommend this dentist to anyone.

I have been with Dr Growney for a while and he has always been great but I felt compelled to write a review because I got a cavity filled yesterday. I was NOT excited for this appointment but Dr. Growney is quick and precise and I felt as little pain as I think is possible when someone is drilling gunk out of your tooth and filling it up again.
I love that while the numbing stuff was kicking in he took the time to ask me if I wanted to know what he was going to do and he walked me through it and showed me the x ray pics. I love that stuff.
I also love that he has a downtown/​Union Square location so I can get there easily from the FiDi at work. Keep rocking, Dr. Growney!

I’ve been seeing Dr. Growney ever since a friend recommended him to me when I moved to the city in 2011 and have had a great experience so far. He and his staff are professional, flexible and go out of their way to make sure you are comfortable and satisfied.
I needed a complicated (and expensive) procedure done to replace a bridge on my front teeth and I had been putting it off for years. Dr Growney walked me through the options, answered all my questions and gave me a projection of my out of pocket cost to help me plan ahead. I ended up going through with the procedure and couldn’t be happier with the results.
If your new to SF and looking for a top-​notch dentist, I would highly recommend you check out Growney Dental.

I am a horrible patient. I routinely miss appointments or have to reschedule at the last minute, yet fully expect Dr. Growney and his staff to drop everything to fit me in when I have a dental emergency. They probably all think I am a prick (justifiably), but you would never know it from the 5 star treatment I receive on every visit. Dr. Growney and his staff are just good, genuine people who work hard to take the «suck» out of going to the dentist.
One minor gripe — the women who work here are all quite fetching. This may sound like a silly complaint but I have a thing about hot chicks seeing me so vulnerable — splayed in a chair with my gross, cigarette/​booze stained mouth open like a empty clam shell. I guess this is my issue not theirs.
Anyway, you can’t go wrong with this place.

Honestly, Dr Growney and his staff were about as exceptional as you can get. I had just had the dental experience from hell earlier in the day (Van Ness Dental should be investigated by the Board of Dentistry). I called around 12 to ask Franklin Dental for a second opinion. The woman who answered the phone was sweet, warm, and calm. She said she could get me in at 1 or at 3:30. Not only could they get me in the same day… They gave me options! I was so relieved!
I went in and met the team. The waiting room had good (read: relevant!) magazines and a really comfortable couch (these things matter!). I met Dr Growney and he was so down to earth. I told him about my previous experience and he transformed in to the «big brother who takes on the nefarious bully». It was like every one in the office assumed a sense of betrayal along with me. As a result, they seemed to bend over backwards to accommodate me. I’m sure, though, they treat everyone that way and I’m just not quite accustomed to that type of doctoral experience.
An experience is signed and sealed with the presence of a good staff. The girls there were fantastic. Truly fantastic.
They were able to get me in for a follow up two days later. As one guy says to another after meeting the new girlfriend: «[he’s] a keeper.»
Highly highly highly recommended.
