Our group has started as a Partnership with Sports and Joint Replacement Orthopaedists at San Francisco Orthopaedics. We then have branched off as an exclusively Spine Surgery Group in 2014. This has allowed us to concentrate exclusively on the spinal conditions and better serve our patient population.

After receiving his medical degree at the State University of New York Downstate Medical Center in 1976, Dr. Hsu completed a 1-year internship at Loma Linda Medical Center. Following this he finished a 2-year general surgery residency at Mt. Zion Hospital in San Francisco and a 4-year orthopaedic residency at the San Francisco Orthopaedic Residency Program, where he has continued to serve as a faculty member for nearly two and a half decades since his graduation. Following his residency, Dr. Hsu completed a fellowship in Spine and Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery at the University of Hong Kong, one of the première centers of surgical spine care at that time.

Ken Hsu has been the director of spine services at St. Mary’s Spine Center since 1988.

Dr. Hsu is the only Physician that gave my husband hope after seeing 2 other Physicians for his Spondylolisthesis and severe sciatica pain. The day we saw him, we got an updated CT scan within an hour and came back to see him the same day. My husband was scheduled for a L5-S1 fusion within 2 weeks. He followed every instruction given by Dr. Hsu for optimal recovery. It has been over 8 years and he is almost pain free every day. He is just the best!

Well – 2 years later and my husband remains in chronic, debilitating pain. Dr Hsu just keeps telling is to come back every 2 months. No plan to fix the problems that have essentially disabled my husband. No referral to physical therapy. Nothing but a 2 minute appt where we don’t feel heard. What started as a promising relationship has turned into a nightmare.

Dr. Ken Hsu was recommended to us by my dad’s oncologist, Dr. Edward Chan, to perform a vetebroplasty to fix my dad’s compression fractures. Before surgery, Dr. Hsu took me to the nurses’ station and showed me the images from the CAT scan so I can be educated on the WHAT, the WHERE, the WHY, the HOW, etc… He answered questions with direct answers and seemed extremely confident about the outcome of the surgery, which gave me lots of hope. It’s been 2.5 months since the surgery and my dad is recovering well considering that he had also been diagnosed with Multiple Myelome (a type of bone cancer). Upon meeting him for the first time, I can already tell he is a doctor who knows what’s he doing. Also, his assitant, Kirsten, was extremely helpful in answering post-op questions, returning phone calls, and was just an overall delight. Oh, let’s not forget Peter at the appointments desk… super nice, patient, and professional. Thank you Dr. Hsu and everyone at your office!

Dr. Hsu is amazing. My partner showed up at St. Mary’s ER scared and unable to move her arms. The ER staff realized that she had more than just a muscle strain and actually got Dr. Hsu (the head of spinal surgery) to come down and see her. He looked at her MRI, ordered a new one, and told us to come to his office first thing the next morning. He was so reassuring and accommodating.
The next day, Dr. Hsu told us what so many other doctors couldn’t: my partner had a badly herniated disk. He clearly explained all of our options, gave his recommendation, and left us alone to make a decision. Three days later, he removed one of my partner’s discs.
After the surgery, he made a point of tracking me down and reassuring me that everything went well. He also gets super bonus points for checking in on my partner so often while she was in the hospital — he even popped in on a Sunday night!
Bottom line: Dr. Hsu is amazing. He is one of the most kinetic people I’ve ever met, but he always takes the time to answer questions and to ensure that his patients know what is going on. I cannot recommend him highly enough.

I had a badly herniated disc and Dr. Hsu and his staff got me into surgery very quickly. Everything went well and I’m well on my way to recovery. He is straightforward, but very friendly and a little humorous as well. He really cares about his patients and when I had to go back in because my incision was bleeding, he saw me right away and fixed me up in no time. When I had questions while at home recovering, I left a message at his office and Dr. Hsu called me back directly. I couldn’t ask for a better surgeon. (by the way this same orthopedic group performed back surgery on Joe Montana back in 1986 — they are very well known).
Unfortunately I cannot give the same high ratings to the nurses on the 7^th floor at St. Mary’s — that place is totally disorganized and a miserable place to be stuck for a few days after surgery, but it is worth going through to have an excellent surgeon like Dr. Hsu get you fixed up.
