I love this John Velasquez Salon because of the super color and classy haircuts and wonderful blow out styling they do!
And I love it because the owners John and Pat and my stylist, Kerrin, are the quite simply the
nicest people ever! The atmosphere is so comfortable for women and men and the results
for your hair are terrific.
I think they have lots of loyal customers and that is because they know what they are doing and they listen to their clients!

I was looking for a place to get my haircut while we were in town, and walked in here to make an appointment. Olivia was able to meet with me, and I cannot even describe how great she was. I really wish I could find a stylist like her in Kansas.
I was going short, and Olivia was super helpful in guiding me to a great cut, but never pushing me to do something I wasn’t comfortable with. She was knowledgeable and sweet and I will go back in a heartbeat whenever I am in town. The price was reasonable as well! Go see Olivia!

John Velasquez Salon is a gem in the heart of Jackson Square! I’ve been going to the salon for a little while now and even on hectic work days have always walked out feeling a lot better because of such a great haircut. Also, ask John about hair coloring. He really took the time to walk me through the different options before I chose the best process for my hair color.

Olivia gave me an excellent haircut! I was just a walk in but got right in for a ‘do. I’m trying to grow out a pixie so I wasn’t sure what to do as i get into that awkward hair phase. But no fear! I got a great, cute cut with longevity. Olivia also gave me some great advice on keeping my locks healthy. Can’t recommend this place enough. Worth the money.

I was in desperate need of a hair cut and the stylist I had been seeing only worked 3 days a week and was booked a month out for nights and weekends. I work downtown and while walking around during my lunch hour, I walked by John Velasquez Salon. I went inside and chatted with the front desk and price which was totally reasonable. I booked an appointment with Olivia for the following week during my lunch hour. The location of the salon is so convenient and seems like it will be easy to get in with my schedule which is a huge plus. Olivia spent time looking at my hair and talking about what cut we should do. We agreed to a trim and to adding in a few more layers since it was getting longer. Of course it looked amazing when I left the salon but the real test is when I go style it myself. And it looked amazing then too! Olivia was fantastic! Great at listening to what is important and then giving you the cut you need. She is also super nice and easy to talk to which for me is important too! I will definitely be back!

Olivia is the best! I have damaged hair which has years of Henna and color. I color every month so there are at least 24 color sessions on my hair. Plus I use a straightening iron three times a week. I have black hair and I wanted highlights. Olivia consulted with me for an hour, then did a test strand and then very carefully applied the highlights. She checked my hair every 15 minutes to make sure it was ok. My first appointment took 3.5 hours and I came out of the salon looking like a goddess. Blush!
Olivia is very skilled and very careful, two qualities that make her a star stylist and colorist. I go to her every month and she does a great job every time. I highly recommend her.

Met Kerrin on a street corner one day, loved her hair and followed her for a consultation. Went back a few weeks later for color and cut. She gave a fantastic hair cut. She knows what she is doing, very confident and professional. Highly recommend the salon and especially Kerrin.

This is a great salon located in a beautiful Jackson square. I’ve always had an amazing experience there. I used to work really close and saw many different stylists through the years. I’ve never seen John himself, but I’ve seen his work and can tell you that he is a hair genius; he really handpicks people that work for him, cause it’s HIS name on the door :))

I was in town this week for work and needed to find a salon to fix the bad haircut I got back home. I used Unilocal to locate a salon close to where I was, and this was the closest. They were super nice and were able to see me that day. I saw Olivia and she took the time to hear what I was trying to do and then broke down hair type and my face to explain what options would work with me. She also took into account how much maintenance I was comfortable with and created a beautiful haircut that I love! The salon had such a good vibe, too, and I left feeling great about my new haircut. Thank you! Next time I’m in town, I will be back!

I can not express how much I appreciate Olive’s work on my hair! Everyone knows how important it is to have that stylist who actually listens, and I am not talking «yeah, uhu, totally!» but really does listen to you and give you her honest professional opinion. She is the kind of stylist who would tell you BEFORE making a cut if something you wanted maybe wasn’t the best choice and she can tell you why.
I went in yesterday to have my hair lightened and cut before my wedding and was greeted first thing with a warm smile and a friendly «hello» by Olivia as I walked into possibly the cutest salon San Francisco has to offer. She sat me down and really worked with me on the right color for my skin tone and a cut to match my face shape while maintaining a length I was comfortable with. I never felt abandoned while the dye was in, as many stylist can leave you feeling, I never wondered if she was aware of how much time had past or if she was ever going to get this dye out of my hair. She was always buzzing around making sure I was doing great, asking if I needed anything, and just generally being helpful. Honestly after the experience I had yesterday with this salon and particular stylist I can’t see myself trying out anywhere else, it just feels like home.

A friend recommended John Velasquez Salon to me a few years ago. I have thoroughly enjoyed every visit I have had there. I always schedule Kerrin to do my hair. She is amazing!!! I’ve gone in for a simple wash and blow out and she made me feel like I was on a relaxing and rejuvenating vacation for 2 hours and when she was done I walked out of the salon with fabulously amazing looking hair and a smile on my face that lasted for two days! When I’ve asked for a hair cut, Kerrin is always super attentive and accommodating to how I would like my hair to look.

I have loved my experience at John Velasquez over the past 3 years, first as a client of Arianna’s and for the last two years as a fanatical client and fan of Natalie’s.
Now that Natalie has moved to Jackson Place Salon, I will be devotedly following her there, and was really grateful that the folks at John Velasquez called to let me know. Thanks Pat and John!

This review is for Natalie, since she is the only stylist I have worked with. Natalie is very talented and easy to work with. She is great at taking my vague ideas of what I want and dialing them in to an actual style. She has been patiently working with me for nearly a year and a half, keeping my goal of growing my hair out longer in mind and making it look good throughout the process. She is so easy to talk to, great at remembering things and making you feel comfortable. I think that the greatest, and hardest to find, attribute in a stylist is vision, and I trust Natalie’s.
Regarding the atmosphere of the salon, it is professional and clean and the location is very pretty. I started going here when I worked nearby in the Financial District, and I continue to go there now that I work much farther away in Soma. It is worth the trip.

This is the worst salon I have ever been in.
If I can give no star, I would have done so.
The salon looks classy by itself, but not with a very bad tempered owner sitting inside. I was having a formal party in one of the local hotel downtown, so I thought I will have my hair styled in a salon. Since I’m new to SF, I did some homework and found this salon. They asked for $ 50 for hair styling by one of their trainees. I didn’t even know that before I went in.
When I arrived at the salon with my friend, the owner didn’t look welcoming at all. In fact, I wouldn’t have booked an appointment if I ever see the own’s hair. The trainee was nice, but very nervous. I told her that I want my hair to be styled, but not too much. She asked for a picture and I shown her one. However, she seemed confused as she kept wanting to give me another look. I would have been happier if she can stick to what I have shown her in the photo. Our conversation was getting no where, the owner came and told me that if I kept going like this, she is charging me more, as I was taking too much time. HAVE YOU EVER BEEN ASKED TO PAY MORE FOR SUCH REASON? I was only in her salon for 15 mins when she told me that.
What she have said seemed to make her trainee even more nervous, so my friend offered to show her how I would like my hair done. And here comes the unfriendly owner again, she asked my friend to sit all the way at the back, on the chair which was very far from me. WHAT IS WRONG WITH HER BY SENDING MY FRIEND AWAY? Her tone sounded like a school teacher when she asked my friend to go and sit at somewhere else. When my friend was trying to ask her for the reason, she was so angry and told my friend that she was disturbing the hair stylist. She did not tell my friend not to touch my hair when we just arrived and she was so rude when she was speaking to her. With no manner at all. When my friend was trying to ask her, she could not even reason herself, and another stylist had to step in and give excuses. The owner remained on her chair and looked angrily at my friend.
If she could say her request in a nicer way, none of us would have felt so upset. I feel sorry for this salon, as it has such a bad owner. All the stylists who work inside have to put up with her lousy temper.
I don’t care whether she was having a bad day, her behavior was not professional at all. If she keeps doing it, it will eventually damage the salon’s reputation. And yes, I do agree with another review, THIS SALON CHARGES YOU IN A VERY SNEAKY WAY.
It was a really unpleasant experience, and my hair was over done by her trainee. I kept feeling that my hair was too much for the event that night. What’s worse, I really feel sorry for my friend, because she was treated so badly by them.

After recently moving to the SF, I knew finding a good salon would be difficult. I used Unilocal to find somewhere with good reviews and close to my apartment. I called on a Wednesday and was able to schedule an appointment for Saturday. Natalie cut my hair and she was super nice, not to mention she made my hair look amazing. I had to write a review because Unilocal was so helpful with my search.

I’ve been getting my hair cut (plus hair treatments) by Natalie for the last year and she’s the BEST. So talented and friendly, always has great stories to tell, and makes my hair look fabulous. Sadly, she has moved to another salon, but luckily for me it’s still nearby!

I have been to this salon twice, and both times have been disappointed. The first time I went I got my hair highlighted – the stylist ended up adding a toner to brighten the color of my hair (which looked great) but she neglected to tell me it was $ 40 more. I had to find out when paying the bill at the end. I felt awkward arguing the price in front of the stylist, so I called back the next day to speak with the manager. He begrudgingly credited me back for the additional service, but not without laying a trip first. The second time I went back, the same thing happened – my highlights were not $ 158 – they were hiked up to $ 198. My only advice is that you pay for your services BEFORE you get them done – this salon can be sneaky in adding in additional services that cost a lot more than you bargain for.
The other thing I didn’t like about my experience is that the hairdresser seated next to me talked incredibly loudly with her client about her latest weekend escapades, much of which involved drinking and getting into bar fights. Not so classy.

After a really bad haircut from a local salon (it wasn’t what I wanted and I had to trim parts of it off myself) I got referred to John Velasquez by my co-​worker last fall and have been going ever since. It is located on the quiet Jackson Street in the financial district and the salon itself has a nice décor. Natalie has been cutting my hair and she is wonderful! My hair looks fantastic afterwards and she’s very easy to talk to. Plus it is easy to get an appointment, usually I book it the week of and sometimes have been able to get in calling the day before. I commute up from the south bay and even if it wasn’t convenient for me, I would still get my haircut here. Thank you John Velasquez Salon and Natalie!

I was walking around Jackson Square and found this place while searching for a salon. It was my lucky day since Kerrin had an opening and I desperately needed a hair cut/​clean up and a little pampering. My hair is thick, wavy and needed some shape. This is the tricky part since some days I blow it out and other days I want it curly which means I can thin it out to have curls or leave more body for when I want it straight. I explained this issue to Kerrin and she knew exactly what to do with my hair.
An hour later, soft silky hair thanks to Kerastase and a lengthy conditioning treatment. And the hair cut that I’ve always wanted: sleek, side swept bangs, soft and face framing. I think I just found my stylist after 6 months of interviewing/​bad hair cuts.
