Jerome Goldstein, M.D. is a Board-​certified medical neurologist who has a special interest in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of headaches.

Dr. Goldstein graduated from the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York and completed his Neurology residency at the University of California in San Francisco in 1970. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology and is the Director of the San Francisco Clinical Research Center as well as a member of The American Headache Society, The International Headache Society, and The National Headache Foundation.

Dr. Goldstein has directed research studies on every new 5-​HT 1D receptor agonists, including the original pilot studies done on Imitrex® in the United States, including all new prophylactic agents in headache and has authored many research publications in the field of headaches.

Dr. Goldstein is now directing his focus towards finding treatments for patients affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

Dr. Goldstein graduated from the Upstate Medical Center in Syracuse, New York and completed his Neurology residency at the University of California in San Francisco in 1970.

Since completing his residency, Dr. Goldstein has been focusing on treating private patients, as well as conducting clinical trials in the field of headaches and Alzheimer’s Disease.

Well, I don’t want to make any assumptions, but just in case the review written in June 2014 is indirectly referring to me, I have no desire to attack anyone’s character. I am just reporting the experience I had with this doctor. I did not know him prior to seeing him and had no «axe to grind». In fact, the only thing I knew about him was that he was a gay physician who was a bit extravagant. Being a gay man myself, that was not a negative. I had every hope that he would be able to help me.
I have recently learned that a couple of universities have reported on studies showing as many as 50 percent of HIV positive patients suffer from headaches. Those same studies show that up to 25 percent of them have debilitating, chronic headaches.
Maybe my experience would be different today if Dr Goldstien was aware of this data. However, nothing justifies the rude behavior I experienced. It doesn’t matter one’s profession or how much money one collects for that profession, we are all human beings deserving a minimum of cordial behavior from one another.

Took care of my wife who had no success from two other neurologists. He found success and used very old fashioned medicines that were no longer controlled by big pharma. He also cured another friend’s wife as we’ll. that friend and I are both physicians and have no professional relationship with Dr Goldstein

He saved my life and diagnosed me way back in 1985, when no one else knew what was wrong with me. I found him to be cordial and professional. I wasn’t looking for a new friend, or a date. I wanted medical help and for that he gets 5 stars from me. Bravo, Dr. Goldstein! Anyone who suffers from Migraine, should ‘hail’ in the direction of San Francisco every morning, as he was instrumental in developing Imitrex and the second generation triptan, Zomig. So, please enough with the character assassination and judge him on his results, which are extraordinary.

Dr Goldstein saved my life. After seeing several other neurologists and having zero luck finding a solution for my migraines, I finally found Dr. Goldstein who immediately took me off all the other meds I was taking and found one that worked. At one point, i had daily migraines, and now they are down to one or two a month. A miracle to me. I’ve got my life back thanks to Dr Goldstein.

While it is nice to see that someone was helped by this man, my advice is to run in the opposite direction. Those of us who suffer from migraines are often so desperate that we fail to heed the warning signs. This guy is in the pocket of all of the drug companies. If you look on craiglist or anywhere online, you will see all of the «research», that he is doing. His research is all about how much money he can make. I knew better, but one referral from my ex-​primary care physician, and the reality that my wonderful neurologist was dead, brought me to his office. Still, I should have run out as soon as I saw all the drug company chotskies. He doesn’t accept insurance and charged about $ 350 for what he call a consult. I told him that I could not take any triptans. Told him what they did to my heart. Told him that they did nothing for my head… I left there with a bag full of samples, filled with nothing but triptans.
During an appointment with my new primary care doc, I brought up my Jerome Goldstein story and he shared his. JG had called this doctor to ask if he wanted to share some of his senior patients for a study on a medication. Told him that there was big money to be made.
Well respected by whom??? His research is paid for by big pharma. I don’t know about you, but since when did the big drug companies start caring about our well-​being. Sadly, I read one review that actually welcome the opportunity to take drugs that have not yet been approved by the FDA. The FDA is the same agency that approved Topomax for migraines! Now that’s some dangerous medication that should be only be used for unstoppable seizures. I speak from experience when I say that it needs to be banned.
If you need immetrex or one of the other triptans, go elsewhere. He is not a caring man, just a very smart and clever one.

I find that Dr. Goldstein is not a good listener and just starts shouting out the same questions, how many aleve did you take this month, how many immitrex did you take this month, who the hell know and counts the pills they take per month! It is really annoying but I am desperate to find a good neurologist in the city. I used to call on neurologists in the city as a phamaceutical sale reps and they are all aweful. I thougth Dr. Goldstein might have been a hidden gem but I was wrong. Why do so many doctors suck? Susan

I like Dr. Goldstein. He’s a decent doctor. Yes, he can be a little off color, but I think he is very dedicated and thorough. He has spent a lot of time with me and tried to help me with my migraines, which are only a small part of my overall illness. I have a complicated situation and he seems interested in helping me. He has gone out of his way to make special accomodations for me that few doctors are willing to do. While I still have migraines, we have found one medication that I can take that does help. I would love to find something that keep them from coming, although that may be too much to ask!

Dr. Goldstein is a respected researcher, but he’s very condescending. I have depression and migraine (a very common combination); he kept trying to tell me that I didn’t have depression — my psychiatrist disagrees — tried to get me to drop my depression medications, and referred to me as «The Celexa Queen» whenever I had an appointment. He also downplayed my concerns when various of the migraine preventatives he prescribed had serious cognitive and physical side effects.
If you have chronic migraines, you’re probably desperate. Dr. Goldstein is worth trying, but if he doesn’t help you, move on.

He’s very expensive and doesn’t take insurance which is a major drag. He also completely eradicated my headaches, which is outstanding.
You go to see Dr. Goldstein when the Neurologists in your network give up on you. He’s a world-​renowned expert in the field, a former head of the headache section of the Neurological Association, and he runs numerous clinical trials which means you can get the hot new stuff before the FDA has released it to the general public.
Highly recommended.
