Specialties
Isobune™ Sushi Japantown San Francisco is the ORIGINAL sushi boat restaurant. After being patented in 1982, this unique sushi delivering system soon opened as the first sushi boat restaurant not only in San Francisco. but the United States.
We are using a special vinegar for our sushi rice. The vinegar called Yusen-su. It’s a vinegar made by sake lees (the solid material remaining after sake is brewed). It had been popular and used mainly as sushi vinegar in Edo Period (1603 to 1868). Yusen-su is more colorful and more flavorful. Its reddish tinted color is quite distinctive. Because this vinegar is just simply sweet and rich enough naturally, we don’t need to add any sugar in our sushi vinegar. It just matches beautifully with raw fish. You will be so surprised how much sugar other restaurants use for their sushi vinegar to get the right flavor.
And don’t forget! we use Tamaki Gold for our sushi rice. It’s the finest Japanese short-grain rice in the world.
Please enjoy our sushi.
History
Established in 1982.
Going back to the early 70’s when our founder Shoichi Imanaka brought his family to San Francisco from Japan. The Imanaka family owned and operated an exclusive Japanese Restaurant in Osaka. The family was called upon on many occasions to share their talent by the Emperor of Japan and dignitaries from around the world. Our first restaurant in SF, located on Fillmore St. called Tsuruyoshi #2, as well as sister restaurant operated by Shoichi’s brother also called Tsuruyoshi #1 located in downtown San Francisco. In 1978, we opened Kushi Tsuru Restaurant in Japantown SF, a truly authentic family oriented Japanese Restaurant. Kushi Tsuru became an instant success, and it was time to open a second location. Shoichi went back to Japan, and came back with a crazy idea to deliver sushi on boats, Mieko Imanaka, Shoichi’s wife, came up with the name «Isobune™». The word «Iso» means canal, and «bune» means boat, Finally in 1982, we opened our second location in Japantown called Isobune.
