Instituto is a real gem of a community asset. I am trying not to be biased (as I intern here), but it’s one of the rare community organizations that truly caters to the underserved Latino and indigenous population here in San Francisco, with a lot of heart. I am writing this review mainly as a way to raise awareness of resources — Instituto is full of compassionate and competent mental health professionals who go above and beyond healing to serve low SES/​Healthy Kids/​Healthy San Francisco qualifiers and even those without insurance. Mental health is essential to leading a content life, and Instituto offers great services for maintaining community mental health.
Instituto’s philosophy is based in taking culture and spirituality as main modalities of healing. If one thinks about it, much of the fragmentation that comes from painful experiences is due to not having coherent stories, and Instituto’s team works very hard to integrate a holistic approach of healing to wholeness. Programs like La Cultura Cura, Casa Corazon (for parenting skills), Early Intervention (school based services for children), HIV services, La Clinica (outpatient clinic), as well as a beautiful meditation room, have been amazing tools to use for healing our collective consciousness and soul. «Tu eres mi otro yo» (You are my other I) is one of Instituto’s main tenets that truly expresses the love and care that goes into collaborative healing.
