Inn at the Opera

The bad reviews for this place really don’t go far enough. My «suite» was like a dungeon with barely enough room to get around the queen-​sized bed. And… we were over the restaurant with music playing from 7 AM till midnight. Spent two nights but housekeeping never serviced our room. «They come when they come,» we were told. It was awful!

We love this hotel! Hotel is very European style and charming.
The staff is very helpful and friendly.
Our room was the biggest room with a separate sitting room, cozy room.
Really liked the complimentary breakfast.
Will stay again.

Checked in Sunday for a two night stay… checked out Sunday an hour later.
Room was small with no heat and no air. They put an old space heater in the corner for you. Please see the pictures so you can understand what you are getting.
I spent 30 minutes of that hour being hassled by staff about being a Shell Owner and going to a Timeshare update, etc. When I said no repeatedly and finally walked away, the girl had the nerve to tell me she was downstairs every day and would be checking back with me to try and get me to go throughout my whole stay! When I finally got to the room I got 4 calls from staff on the land line…
We checked out to stay somewhere we wouldn’t be harassed.
This location is close to the opera house but really nothing else and the parking is a nightmare; you wait for the valet forever.
I have stayed here half a dozen times in the past and the hotel is ok as long as you won’t be spending much time in it… Now that Shell is going under they have apparently unleashed their high pressure sales people to sick everyone who reserved a room. It’s sad really. I will not be back.

Pro’s — location is great — staff is courteous, friendly, and accommodating — the place is clean — great restaurants close by — very close to the symphony.
Con’s — small room (but bathroom was pretty good size and clean) — thin-​ish walls — limited valet parking (we got lucky).
Overall — great value for the price, pro’s far outweigh con’s, if your in the city for a couple nights, this place is hard to beat, they make you feel at home /​safe, and the place has charm and character. Highly recommend.

We spent the weekend here. It was one of the best hotel experiences I have had. The staff was friendly, responsive and efficient. The location was convenient. A wonderful experience.

Our family let us use their timeshare. The rooms were a bit small with no air. It was perfect for two people and we had a nice view of the street below. We asked for a fan because the street was loud at night so we couldn’t leave the window open. Each day there is continental breakfast from 7am-​10am which had fresh fruit, pastures, cereal, oatmeal, coffee and juice. We were full and it wasn’t too busy. There is a tiny 4 person elevator which adds to the charm. It’s not as close as we would have liked it to be to the Union square and it was scary to walk at night. We took Über and the BART to avoid all the transients. I would visit again but just with one person and get ready to walk because it’s 20 – 30 min to walk to mostly anything.

Super cute hotel. It was small, but we didn’t care. We only needed a hotel to sleep. Our godparents got us this hotel for 4 night. I honestly loved this place. Complimentary breakfast everyday. The reason why I give this hotel 5 stars is because of the staff of this hotel. THEY ARE FREAKING AMAZING. SUPER NICE, GIVE GREAT RECOMMENDATIONS, VERY HELPFUL. This place also have DVD that you can borrow if you just want to relax for the night. The room had a microwave and sink. Complete with dishes, forks, spoons, and glass cups. We had a lot of leftovers when we went out to eat and having these in the room are a bug plus for us.

San Francisco, by nature, will have small rooms and limited parking. We were getting married a few blocks away at San Francisco City Hall and booked the spacious Opera Suite for our wedding. It was beyond perfect. Bride and groom had separate bathrooms, and as the bride I had my own plush dressing suite. Guests hung out in the front room with full access to the kitchen area. Though the parking valet seemed confused and left my car double parked for ages, leaving me to sweat and perhaps swear a bit, the front desk was fabulous.

I’ve stayed here twice, once last year and this year — both times for 3 nights at a time.
Pros — Clean hotel in a great location, and you can’t beat the price for the Ballet suite. It would be hard to find a hotel and room of this caliber for this price in San Francisco. There are plenty of nice cafes and shops within walking distance. There’s also a free continental breakfast but I almost always ate somewhere else because I like a more substantial breakfast. Wifi typically worked just fine for us.
Cons — As others have said, the Ballet room is tiny. But look, you don’t go to San Francisco to sit in your hotel room all day. Also, the walls are thin. When there were no guests in the rooms adjacent to mine, I got a nice, sound sleep. When there were others in the rooms next to mine, it got kinda noisy.
Bottom line — I’m about 80% sure that I’ll stay here again next time I go to San Francisco.
By the way, I see that a lot of the other reviewers mention that they are time share members. We are not — we just booked this as regular guests, not part of a time share.

This small hotel in the Hayes Valley is the perfect place to stay if you like opera, symphonic music, ballet, or jazz. That’s right — -the new Jazz Center opened a year ago and has some big name performers. It’s also not far from the BART station located at Civic Center. So there are no hassles with trying to find a cab because everything you want to do is a block away. And if there is a desire to go shopping in the Union Square area — there is BART or if you feel like a bit of exercise, it’s a two mile walk. The Hayes Valley also offers some good restaurants and small eateries.

This hotel is part of the Wyndham properties, so it is a time share. The disadvantage of trying to stay here is that the owners have priority so sometimes the rooms you want won’t be available. We have been fortunate in being able to not only book a room but to have the opera suite — which is basically a sitting room, kitchenette area, bedroom and two full baths. Very comfortable, especially if you are staying for a long weekend. There are other smaller rooms available.
The hotel was built in the early 1900s and housed opera singers and performers. There is no central heating which isn’t a huge deal in the summer or spring, but in the winter it’s cold so there are space heaters in the rooms and they are very efficient.
Another plus is that breakfast is included and it’s served in the space that becomes Plaj in the evening — a Scandinavian restaurant that’s become popular! The breakfast is ample — boiled eggs, bagels, breads, pastries, fruit, cereal, juice, and Peets coffee. It is all on a large buffet table — you serve yourself.
We’ve found the staff at the hotel to be courteous and helpful. And if you happen to be around at 3PM, cookies fresh from the oven are available at the front desk. You can’t ask for anything better than that!

I’ve stayed here a number of times, probably a weekend night every two or three months. It’s very convenient when being in SF to enjoy the city for a day or weekend. They do have limited valet parking but I’ve always been able to find nearby street parking. The rooms are nice, well decorated, clean, updated, and comfortable. They have a basic kitchenette or at least refrig and microwave, dishes, and a stove top. The restaurant is pretty good and the complimentary breakfast is nice.

This place is perfect if you want to frequent this area of SF. Note: if you’re expecting a chainy hotel experience, this is not your place.
The building is old– which means the rooms are on the small side and you have to be okay with that. Personally, I love it. I may be biased since I’m from SF and I’m a Shell Vacations Club owner… oh well. The front desk staff is great, they always try to get me into a room early if it’s possible, which I totally dig.
The free continental breakfast is one of my favorite amenities of this place. Boiled eggs, cereal, pastries, bagels, fresh fruit, coffee, juice… epitome of the perfect continental breakfast!

Pros: good location, nice complimentary breakfast, free WiFi, free cookies, free apples, friendly service and overall good bang for your buck.
Cons: Thin walls, clean sheets every 7 days (ahhhh), can be a noisy location.
I stayed here just as the Giants won the world series so it may have been an off time for crowds and noise level but overall a good deal.
Also the rooms could definitely use some TLC as there were scuff marks and dings on the walls and bathrooms etc.

This place is perfect for what we needed. The room was clean, the hotel lobby was cute and the free breakfast was perfect.
It is a little dated, but so are a lot of things in San Fran.
The staff was pleasant and there were plenty of options of breakfast. And you can’t forget the afternoon cookies.

Lets change the name to Mystery at Inn at the Opera. Why? Because our room got ROBBED. But wait they have slide room keys and there was no sign of forced entry. OH, and I was sleeping in the room when it happened? The mystery gets interesting to know that per the hotel reports my room was accessed by a key (no I didn’t loose one) in the wee morning. Hummmm
Reguardless of the mystery this hotel is great for a one night stay. Two nights is ok, by three it starts to be down right uncomfortable. The boutique becomes a bandaid for a host of other nuiances. What kind you ask? Want to run back upstairs for that jacket? Well you get to wait 20 minutes for the elevator. Need to get some air since there’s no balcony? Outside with you. There’s no courtyard here. Will you settle for a relaxing chair? Great so will the rest if the hotel I counted 3. And they are taken by the people waiting for the hot valet to get their cars.
There’s a back room/​restaurant that serves as a breakfast bar and opens in the eve as a pop up Swedish restaurant at night. The space is a bit of a vault, no windows. If staff will let you, maybe you can sit in there… Maybe.
The rooms are small which is cute for one night. The floors creek and the walls are thin. How thin? Well, when its 1am and the couple next door wants to continue the opera by recounting show tunes as a duet what’s a person to do? Ruin a special and kinda cute moment? If your loud in bed, snoring or otherwise please avoid this hotel. If you know show tunes it’s a draw.
The staff was nice but then showed little concern when I called down to report the robbery. Has this happened before? Since I was sleeping when it happened I guess I’m glad whoever had a key was only there to rob and not worse. It did have me concerned though. Even though they weren’t. The manager was suppose to have called me later that day (yes it also happened the morning I left) and no call.
My advice: there’s little pitch and poor tune at this Inn if you are expecting the opera air on the side of a hummmm.

I was here for 3 days and my expectations weren’t very high after reading some of the reviews so I was pleasantly surprised when I saw and experienced the place for myself.
I got to the area via the BART (while my wife had driven and checked in) and was in awe of the beautiful buildings in the area especially city hall on my walk over from the BART. When I got to the Inn I was happy to see how close we were to city hall.
I was under the impression that the rooms were tiny so once again I was pleasantly surprised to see how nice and comfortable the room was with the spacious bathroom and nice sized living room. The bed was very comfortable by the way.
In the morning I took advantage of the continental breakfast which was very good and even though it was just one person working it, he did an outstanding job of keeping everything stocked and was polite and professional even with the very rude and snobby people that chose to be jerks over a free meal. The juice and coffee were of a good quality and I learned that a bagel with cream cheese go’s well with a slice of tomato and a sprinkle of salt and pepper!
After breakfast I decided to explore the city via public transportation so I went to the front desk and asked them about it and which bus to catch and so on and so on. Man was I glad that I did because I Jess Garcia which was very helpful and he gave me some visitor bus passes that some guests had left with him when they checked out. Throughout my stay Jess served as my navigator. He knows the city and the public transportation like the back of his hand!
THE CITY OFFERS VISITOR PASSES WHICH MAKE IT CHEAPER AND EASIER TO GET AROUND.
Like i mentioned earlier, my wife arrived before I did and she parked in a supposed lot a block away. When I walked out there in the morning, the real owner of the lot had left a huge sign on the windshield letting us know that a tow truck was on it’s way. It turned out that my wife was scammed and we were nearly towed so BE CAREFUL! !!!
We ended up biting the bullet and paid the 30 something dollars a day and chose peace of mind over pinching pennies. Those meters can be tricky and confusing. The last time I was in the city was on my birthday a few years ago and my car got towed. I ended up paying over 700 $. HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME! !
The valet parking was awesome by the way.

All in all, I very much enjoyed my stay and the staff had a lot to do with it. I am looking forward to returning!

Their staff needs to take responsibility if they cause damage on a car.

Smallest hotel room I’ve even seen or stayed in. But it was clean and comfortable. We got the last valet parking spot or we’d have had a LONG walk with armloads to carry back to the hotel. Elevator is kinda scary and only holds 4 people. We didn’t experience any of the staff issues others have reported, but we had minimal interaction with them. All in all, got the job done, the location was convenient, and the price wasn’t outrageous (for The City anyways).

Overall, we very much enjoyed our stay at the Inn at the Opera, and we’d definitely stay here again. Location-​wise, it was perfect. Right by city hall, within walking distance of the BGCA (which is where we were seeing some shows and the reason for our visit), and within walking distance of all public transit. The hotel itself is small and very historic. It’s not big, but it is really nice. I love the elevator, which had a max capacity of 4 and was more like a closet. It was even behind a normal door on each floor.
In general, the staff was super great. Since the hotel is so small, they really get to know you. They all recognize you on sight and do just about anything they can to help you. There are also lovely little touches, like fresh-​baked cookies available in the lobby every day at 3.
Room-​wise, they are small. Hey, it’s a historic hotel! Deal. But despite the small room, we had a microwave, mini fridge, armoire with a few drawers (no closet), small table with two chairs, etc. I felt like they tried their hardest to make the rooms as comfortable as possible given the space restraints of the room. Bathroom wasn’t huge but wasn’t too tiny. There wasn’t a very large area to put your toiletries (there were some small glass shelves mounted on the wall). Shower water pressure and temperature were good. I absolutely adored that you could actually open the windows at night, and we never had to use the in-​room thermostat. There was a little coffee maker and an actual set of dishes, glassware and mugs. Nice touch.
The free continental breakfast was better than most hotel continental breakfasts. It generally consisted of bagels, pastries, a fruit selection, yogurt, cottage cheese and cereal. A bit carb heavy. I love carbs, so that’s OK, though. Coffee, juice. To go cups. Pretty fine really.
We did have two minor complaints:
–There was mold on the grout in our bathroom. I did feel like it was cleaned, but the bathroom just needed a re-​grouting.
–There was no full-​length mirror in the room… you had to go down to the lobby if you wanted to look in one.
Also we had one major complaint: We arrived due to an early flight around 11 a.m. Checkin isn’t till 3. We called and asked about an early checkin and were told they couldn’t promise us one. When we arrived, we were told they could hold our bags but that our room was not ready. They could not give us an estimate of when it would be clean, but they would call us when it was ready. We left our bags. We never received a call. And we finally just went back after 3 and checked in at the normal time. If they were going to not let us check in early, it would have been better to tell us so to begin with. And, if they really just do not offer early checkin, they should not pretend that they do. If that’s the case, I would encourage them to reevaluate how they handle this request. It’s fairly common and (in my opinion) not unreasonable at all for a guest to request and receive an early checkin.
But overall, we had a lovely time and found this hotel met our needs in a very satisfactory way. We would definitely stay again.

Inn at the Opera is a nice, smaller hotel with very friendly, personable service. It is newly renovated (some floors are currently undergoing renovation) and features a popular restaurant (Plaj).
Located behind City Hall and next to the Opera, the location of this hotel is ideal for anyone visiting the opera, ballet, or symphony. Located at Franklin and Fulton, it’s a short walk from McAllister and Van Ness, which have major bus routes. It’s also just a few minutes away (walking) from the Van Ness and Civic Center Muni/​BART stations on Market, so it’s really easy to get around from here.
Pros:
Small hotel (48 rooms) so staff remembers you
Very friendly service (greeted every time we went in or out)
Free wifi
Computer in lobby for guests to access internet
Kitchenette with fridge, microwave, coffeepot, dishes, silverware, and sink (great for having a drink or heating up leftovers)
Free breakfast (varies slightly daily: cereal, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, muffins, breads, bagels, English muffins, cream cheese, jam, tomatoes, fruit, coffee, tea, oj, etc.)
Otis Spunkmeyer cookies at 3pm and apples in the lobby
Daily basic cleaning for timeshare owners (other timeshares may only offer a single midweek cleaning)
Quick heater in room
Duvets that get washed (no yucky reused comforters contaminating the bed)
Makeup remover wipes/​cloths in bathroom
Windows that open (love that fresh air!)
Street parking may be available, but use caution
Cons:
Wifi’s weak signal makes it practically useless
Only one small elevator (holds 4 people)
Although they are renovating, there are some areas clearly needing repair (like the baseboards in our room, or the walls of the elevator)

Overall, the pros greatly outweigh the cons. I would definitely stay here again. We stayed in one of the remodeled rooms (top floor-7^th)and while it is small, it was enough room for two people to comfortably spend a week. One of the biggest perks of staying here is the free breakfast, which can really save money and start the day off right. And the best part of that? They have fresh blueberries and raspberries every morning. Breakfasts aren’t always very vegan friendly, but this one was 100% vegetarian with a lot of vegan options. Seriously awesome.
