I am in love with Imagiknit. I suck at knitting and am not much better at crocheting, and the lovely folks at Imagiknit have never sneered at me when I pushed my toes together and stared at them and said… um… I can only knit and purl”…
Oh this is an unfinished review from several years ago, but having lived in two different towns since this review and having gotten so much better at making things out of yarn *and* taking multiple cross country trips where yarn stores were visited like holy museums, I must say that Imagiknit is one of the best.
The lighting is amazing, easy to see and natural. The organization is superb, you can easily (with or without help) find what your looking for because it is organized in a simple and efficient manner. And the selection is amazing, they have decent ‘workhorse’ yarns (like 220 and malabrigo) and then higher end stuff as well. And last but not least, the employees were really, really patient and helpful. The owner can be a little chilly, but I’ve never seen her be rude to anyone. I dearly, dearly miss Imagiknit!!!

Stopped by on my way back to NC. I was very disappointed. Yarn is not organized in any manner or priced. You have to take each skein to the counter for price checks. It was very disorganized and cluttered.

Very helpful employees and a wonderland of yarn! I love the big selection of yarn they have! I was visiting San Francisco. If i lived there this would be my home shop.

I don’t knit but my mom does… and CLEARLY this place is stacked. amazing yarns that i’d have to pick for my mom to knit me up something. Owner is super nice and ready to help and her little pet friends (her 2 dogs) are pretty cute to.

I just loved this store. It’s got a great balance of organization and being full to the brim with goodies!
I went in just to browse and as a fairly new knitter, to scope out a few sample pieces for ideas. The staff was great — I received a nice greeting and offer of help, as well as a suggestion or two for future projects, but wasn’t rushed in any way or pushed to make a purchase.
But a purchase was indeed in the works, because ImaginKnit had a lot of great yarn on sale (discontinued mostly) and wow! What a bonanza for someone like me, with her eye on a lot of smaller beginner projects!

Earlier this week I didn’t have time to run to the store so instead I placed my order online for only $ 4 shipping, they shipped it out the same day and my mailman dropped off my package at 9:30 the next morning!
Unfortunately I didn’t get the right gauge from the needles I bought so I needed the next size down needle. I placed another order and again received it the next morning!
I prefer to go down to the shop in person but sometimes we just don’t have time, I really love how affordable and convenient they make it.
If you do go to the store, everyone is super friendly and helpful. In the past few years I’ve taken 3 classes and really enjoyed them all. You can’t go wrong with this place!

This place is overly due for review. 3.5 stars.
I called few times to check on the stock. 1 out of 3 will be nice conversation. The rest a bit of cold and somewhat feeling like you’re in NY fast food resto. Just straight to the point, and done.
During many visit tho, it’s different story. Everyone was very nice and helpful. They even help you if you create a mess during your project. It’s very nice and welcoming environment.
They offer classes for knitting, crochet, needle felting, etc. Mostly private lesson.
I never enrolled in 1 so I can’t comment. I inherited all the skills from my grandma. Except maybe needle felting, that’s from youtube. ;)
The store inventory is pretty impressive. From super soft yard to bejeweled yarns, from fuzzy to Italian merino. I have to say this store is for high end quality and it reflected on the price.
So don’t be surprise how much they charge for a ball of yarn.
It’s been awhile from my last shopping from here, but they used to not having too much general yarns. They are more focus on «hardcore» type.
If you are beginner, just go to Michael’s or Beverly’s store, they have more affordable yarns.
Parking is difficult and I’m not sure if you can exchanged some of the items? I saw a lady exchanging a yarn, but even everyone who work there knows her name.

Gorgeous store. I’m visiting from out of town and was looking for some inspiration. The ladies were incredibly helpful and one of them literally checked in with me at least half a dozen times. She showed me a very easy beginner hooded cowl on display which came with a free pattern if I purchased the yarn. The yarn was a nice chunky wool/​acrylic blend. I normally hate acrylic but this was really a lovely texture. Then I had some free time so they let me stay and knit for an hour! I was half done with the cowl by the time I left. They shared a measuring tape with me, helped me stash my bags while I shopped and even held my iced coffee behind the register for me. They were so sweet and helpful, that now I’m terrified of going to check out the other 2 stores near Pacific Heights. Those reviews sounded so awful, I really can’t imagine! I will happily come back to this store again and again. I only wish I had more time for more projects while I’m in town! They’ve got an adorable store mascot– Lulu who is very charming. The yarns are organized neatly by weight and what a selection!

Yarn galore and they will have supplies for the beginner to the experienced but with the added bonus of getting an experienced sales person to help shop. From cheap cotton to very expensive angora wool, to best knitting and crochet supplies, books and magazines, and for sale many completed items. Spent about 2 hours looking for yarns and appreciated the comfy chairs that allowed my ‘not so excited to be here’ partner to yawn in a corner. Overheard the most amazing conversation of this old seasoned gentleman chatting the young lady at the register. Help is there when needed, but not in an intrusive way and they show you the layout of the store, which I really recommend. A lot of fun for everyone regardless of gender; a great place to take a preteen or teen that has shows interest in knitting or crochet.
Street parking was not bad.

Huge selection, nice and helpful staff, decent prices. I’ve been there a couple times and I’ll be coming back.

I went here after Xmas with my knitting extraordinaire girlfriend. Our shopping visit was inspiring. I am truly hoping to take classes. The ladies in the shop are phenomenal. They take the craft to a spiritual level.

I have found my crochet supply place. There are two rooms with floor to ceiling thread/​yarn. It is exciting, because the quality is high! One room has animal thread/​yarn, the other non animal. After searching with a dumbfound look on my face for five or so minutes, the nicest lady asked if I needed help. I said «YES, PLEASE!» I then pulled out a recent (I am new to crochet) scarf project, where I am practicing three different tunisian crochet styles, where I ran out of the yarn that I stole from my mom. Sorry mom! She explained about the two different rooms and showed me a slightly darker (than my project’s color) yarn, which I then thought would look cool, to have a slightly different color for the rest of the project! She was so sweet, and during my two hour perusing only ONE of the rooms :), helped me a few times. After I explained that my REAL reason for crocheting was to incorporate it into jewelry, she showed me some super cool material!!! I had sooooo many different textures and colors, even after weeding out several, I KNEW it would be more that I could afford. So I asked the other nice lady ringing up people’s items to tell me how much my total was after a few items; and unfortunately I had to leave behind at least half of my oh so desired items (one lonely teardrop rolled down my puffy cheek). They have such great colors of such great quality from all around the world, Argentina, Italy, Japan, Ireland (naturally!). They also have a few made from paper and other interesting sources. Gosh I wish I had more $! Sigh. Well, I WILL be back.
The place has two hour street parking, I found a spot right outside, but I believe that is unusual. One lady parked all the way at Tartine, moved her car and came back for more! She loves this place! They have books too and some free material. The people, especially this one lady, are so super friendly, want you to touch and check out everything; plus the quality and quantity is fantastically overwhelming. You must go!

I’m from San Diego visiting my sister. I crochet and they helped me find some really exciting new yarn. The prices range from really high for the hand made fancy stuff to,
«Whoa this is so pretty and soft»…“yay! It’s only 10 $!“
I will totally come back next time I visit

I read the bad reviews about customer service and have no idea what those people are talking about. The staff was very helpful and patient. They have a huge selection. The yarn can get a bit pricey, but when I mentioned I didn’t want to spend over a certain amount, the woman helping me pointed me to a few options in my budget. I also overheard them complimenting others on hand-​knit clothes they were wearing. I will go back.

I came only once years ago but this place was amazing and the owner and her beautiful doggy were very inviting. I got some imported 70’s mustard thick yarn to have my great grandmother who’s now passed away make me a scarf. Thank you for being a important roll in a memory I will hold forever.

This place just has an enormous amount of yarn. It’s wall to wall wool right from the door, and there’s even another room to the left with even more yarn.
I went looking for a specific yarn in a specific colorway to finish a project, and a lady there was very helpful in explaining how to mix hand-​dyed yarns without it looking obvious. I also selected several colorways for a specific colorscheme, and the same lady gave me a great idea for a project for them.
But let’s be honest. Even if every single soul ignored me during the entire hour I spent there, I’d still give this place five stars. There’s just too much yarn for any other rating.

I am a long-​time knittter, knitting instructor, and soon-​to-​be pattern designer. I’m in town from NYC, I heard about ImagiKnit, and decided to visit. I walked into the store, and was greeted with «Can I help you?» Not «Hello,» «How are you?» or «Nice sweater» (trust me, the sweater was gorgeous). First, if I walk in with said sweater, lovingly made by me with super-​fancy Neighborhood Fiber Co. sport weight yarn, then it should be obvious that I’m here to buy yarn. After that short «greeting,» I was pretty much ignored the entire time I was there (though a young woman came out from the back of the store, and complimented me on my sweater, but that was the only interaction I received).
For the most part, local yarn stores are populated by friendly beings who realize that, while customers could buy yarn online, at much cheaper prices, we choose to support the LYS, because they (usually) provide a service we can’t get from a web store. I’m sure ImagiKnit has some great qualities — and lots of beautiful yarn, by the way — but customer service for *everyone* who walks in, should be a given.
I decided to take myself, and my money, elsewhere.

I have only been here once, but that is all it took for me to fall in love with the store. The workers are so friendly and have excellent customer service. They offer you their assistance and respect when you don’t need it yet. You can feel the yarn without anyone making you feel like you’re doing something wrong.
There is an area in the back of the second room where all the books are located. They have new books. They have a nice selection of books and magazines on sale. They also have binders full of individual patterns that you can purchase copies of. They even have books signed by designers that they sell!
My favorite part of this store is that they have a bunch of knitted sweaters, scarves, and blankets on display and to touch and look at for inspiration. I loved being able to feel the work to get familiar with the texture of the yarn. I learned that I love yarn made with Merino! I love how organized all the yarn is. From type of yarn, then thickness. If you are a beginner or an experienced knitter, you MUST go here!

One day I woke up and decided that I wanted to learn how to crochet.
I really wanted to learn basic stitches so that I can one day create little amigurumis (the Japanese art of crocheting or knitting little cute things, like animals, food, whatever your heart desires – so «kawaii»). Also, my friend was having a baby and I needed to crochet a baby blanket like… ASAP! I had no idea where to begin.
When I searched crochet into the trusty «find» engine on Unilocal,ImagiKnit was the first shop to come up, with raving reviews. Unilocal has never let me down before, so I gave ImagiKnit a shot.
I’ll admit I was actually super nervous to enter the realms of the knitting and crochet world that is ImagiKnit. I didn’t know who or what I would encounter… conceited crocheters? Narcissistic knitters? A yarn-​asaurous-​rex?! Thankfully I found none of the above.
I must have looked like a nudist in the financial district, because immediately one of the customer service reps greeted me and genuinely wanted to help me. I was so relieved that someone offered assistance right away. ImagiKnit is the willy wonka’s chocolate factory of yarn and all things fibres. Beautiful, amazing quality yarns, everything ranging from moderately pricey merino wool to super pricey cashmere/​mohair blends and everything in between.
I proceeded to explain my dilemma to the customer service rep:
«…HELP I HAVE NO IDEA WHAT I’M DOING.»
Thankfully, she didn’t laugh at me. Instead, she set me up with everything I could possibly need to crochet on my own. I was attempting to teach myself through youtube and online references.
I left with a few sizes of crochet hooks, new beautiful yarn for the baby’s blanket, and a new found confidence in the art of crochet. I even signed up to take a private class with an instructor, Judy Sakaguchi, a week later, who was extremely nice and helpful during our lesson. Judy tailored the lesson around new techniques that I had not already taught myself, which was really helpful and worthwhile. I would definitely take a class again! ImagiKnit offers so many cool classes.
Four days after my first visit, i’m back at ImagiKnit, and to everyone’s surprise at the shop I bring my COMPLETED baby blanket along! It’s official, I’m an addict and I am so proud. I leave with beautiful, new hand dyed peruvian merino wool for a scarf that I end up crocheting my mother for Christmas.
ImagiKnit is one of the cutest shops I have ever been in. It reminds me of a room inside the little old lady that lived in a shoe’s shoe home. Complete with the cutest little greyhound shop dog, Mochi! I could spend hours in ImagiKnit, learning, creating, browsing. I would recommend a visit to anyone.
This is going to sound sappy, but if you have the smallest inclination of wanted to learn to crochet or knit, that is enough to be able to learn and create. DO IT!
