Hotel Carlton

You wouldn’t believe how much of a pain it is to find and book a last minute hotel room in the city! So aggravating! Luckily the wifey and me discovered this little gem in Lower Nob Hill on the Hotel Tonight app. Just click, pay, and viola! The room is yours! So rad.
For the price and the not so sketchy area… well, maybe just a little bit at night… it’s a sweet place. Dig the old feel vibe but they have renovated it to keep it up to date… the front desk is welcoming, even suggested self parking to save money. That’s cool. The rooms are pretty roomy, not this closet space where the bed barely fits and the bathroom is the size of a mini backyard shed. Remember to ask for a room away from the front of the hotel– Sutter Street. Our room was crazy quiet! All in all, we’ll definitely be back if we’re in a pinch for a last minute under $ 100 room.

Just left from staying at hotel Carlton this past weekend. Very cute and modern hotel. The staff was extremely friendly and even let us check in 3 hours early without extra charge since we were out of town and it was pouring rain. I was extremely pleased with this most hotels would not allow this.
Valet parking on site was convenient and my car was returned as it left.
The rooms were clean and smelled amazing. The views were nice even in the lower floors. The only downside is the neighborhood in the early morning does get loud, as well as during this weekend they were changing to more modern locks on all the rooms so it was loud. Other then that we loved how close to everything this hotel was and very clean.
We will return to this hotel next time we come visit SF.

A diamond in the rough. A luxury level hotel in the wrong part of town. Recently renovated, friendly staff and kick-​ass maid service. Hotel Carlton’s immaculate rooms are a wonderful sanctuary in the heart of San Fran.

We had the best experience at Hotel Carlton! The staff was so kind and helpful. They even let us store our luggage in the hotel a few days before check-​in so we could walk around the city before going camping for a few days. The hotel is in a pretty good location near Chinatown, and not too far from the Ferry Market Building.
We had put a note in our reservation that we were staying on our anniversary trip, and they were kind enough to leave a little cheese plate with brie, crackers, nuts and chocolate in our room’s refrigerator! They also left a hand-​written card on the bed with chocolates to wish us a pleasant stay. That night we were worn out from camping in Big Basin so we stayed in. We enjoyed wine during their wine hour and they even gave us a whole bottle to enjoy afterwards! We had a few appetizers in the hotel restaurant and hung out in their cute lobby. It has a really cozy feel, especially with the fireplace. I like that they had some books about San Francisco on the coffee table, but they weren’t your average travel book — one was by SF girl by bay.
I also have to say that we really appreciated the nice soaps and lotions provided, especially after two nights of camping!
We chose this hotel because the reviews talked about how quaint and cozy the hotel was, and how incredible the staff is, and the reviews did not disappoint! I also really loved the worldly décor and feel. We would definitely stay here again.

Don’t take my 2 star review wrong — the Hotel Carlton was not bad.
The location was great. I had problems with the spotty internet and the noise. This is an older hotel and has thinner walls and doors — so every time there was someone talking in the halls (which was up to around 1am) it woke me up.
It is just not good for business travelers.
I booked it on Hotel Tonight which had it listed as «Solid», I would call it «Basic».

Staying at the Carlton could not have been any better for me. It is without a doubt the best hotel I’ve ever stayed in.
From the moment we arrived, we were treated like kings! The staff, particularly Theo, are the best in the business.
The hotel has a very chic, boutique style and the décor throughout is very modern. The black and white framed photos of scenes around the world in the hotel and the rooms lend a touch of class, not to mention something interesting to look at in the bathroom!
Our room was spacious, light and airy and clean and tidy. We had a corner room which had a double bed which was extremely comfortable. The walk in cupboard was more than enough room for our luggage and our shopping.
The street outside was a little noisy during the night, but that is certainly not the fault of the hotel. There is a fire station nearby, so light sleepers beware. We only ate in the restaurant one morning and whilst the food was to die for, the service was a little slow, as the waitress was by herself.
It was my birthday during our stay, and unprompted, Theo and his staff surprised me with a birthday cake, birthday card signed by all the staff, balloons, party hats and wine in our room! I was so touched that they had taken the trouble to do this unprompted!
The location of the hotel is excellent, only 3 blocks from Market Street, so good for catching the cable car and a short walk to Union Square.
I cannot recommend this hotel highly enough — I wouldn’t want to stay anywhere else but the Carlton in San Francisco!

Everyone was kind and friendly, plus the place was clean, and I got a free upgrade just because! Can you imagine you are checking in, and a staff member walks over and offers you a free glass of wine? It was all good!

Great location within Union Square and most of the attractions! The hotel has a Southeast Asian vibe and they give out complimentary wine around 5:30pm, although we did not partake. The rooms are on the cozy side but super clean with cute furniture. The only thing I didn’t like was the price of parking– around $ 40 per night and valet service is super slooooow.

What a hidden gem!!! My best friend and I stayed here last night for one night only. We were in the Bay Area (from LA) for a college football game at Levi’s Stadium but wanted to stay in SF to explore the city as much as we could.
PARKING: Pretty convenient. We arrived on a Saturday afternoon at 2pm and found parking on Sutter St right across the street from the hotel. (I believe it’s two hour parking 8am — 4pm) Sunday’s are free. I don’t remember if we paid the meter or not, but I do know we didn’t get a ticket LOL.
CHECK IN/​FRONT DESK: We decided to see if we could check in an hour early (check in is usually at 3pm) and the man at the front desk was able to give us our room! It was great since we were in a little bit of a time crunch before the game later that evening. Both gentlemen were very polite and had a great sense of humor. I forgot they’re names but they were both Filipino. Flip pride! :)
THE ROOM: We booked a Superior King room. SOOOOO CUTE. The hotel itself is so super boho/​indie style. Very colorful and decorative. We had room 412 which was at the end of the hall on the 4^th floor. Very very clean. Nice view. Tasteful & simple room décor. Bed and pillows were incredibly comfy and CLEAN! The bathroom was average size. Love the orange accented mirror and modern sink. Water machine on the 5^th floor (hot, cold, & room temp). We asked the front desk how to work the heater and they said rooms are centrally ventilated so they sent us a portable heater to our room which was great since SF is FREEZING!!! We didn’t spend much time in the room except for showering to get ready and to sleep after the game. But I do wish we were able to stay longer!
STAFF: Every staff member we encountered was very polite and sweet. They were helpful in every aspect of our stay.
NEIGHBORHOOD: This hotel is a 5 min drive/​15 min walk from Union Square. There are a number of cute little restaurants and bars in the area that are walking distance. Walgreens one block up. There are many homeless individuals in this area, but it wasn’t an issue at all for me. HOWEVER, (this has not affiliation with Hotel Carlton) when we got to my car on Sunday morning, we found that my car got broken into Saturday night. It was my fault since I forgot to lock my car doors. A few non valuables stolen ($ 60 dollar watch and my boyfriends sweater *tear*). It could have been worse though. The gentleman at the front desk did warn us at Check In that people do break into cars around the area and to make sure we hide valuables items in our vehicles. This won’t be an issue for you if you remember to LOCK YOUR CAR DOORS AND HIDE ANY VALUABLE ITEMS IN YOUR TRUNK OR TAKE THEM WITH YOU.
Overall, our stay was amazing. We felt at home. Sad we missed out on the free happy hour (530−6pm), but we WILL be back!!! Thank you Hotel Carlton & staff!

Good hotel and fair prices. And a lot of nice restaurants around that you can use in the evening after long SF walks.

I loved this hotel! I found it using the app, Hotels Tonight. The staff was not only friendly but quite funny. I was traveling with my dog an I loved that they didn’t have a pet fee!!! It did say online that they offer pet beds and such if you ask, but I didn’t ask for one, so I can’t comment on that. The wine at night was a nice touch (especially after traveling 7 hours in a car). I loved the way the hotel felt and was decorated. Their shampoo, conditioner, and lotion is amazing. They don’t give mini bottles of the shampoo or conditioner because they have a dispenser in the shower. That might have been my favorite part.
I did not eat at the restaurant downstairs and I did think the parking fee was a bit high, but I am not familiar with the cost of parking in that area.
Overall great price, location, and service. If I go back to San Fransisco I will definitely highly consider staying there again.

My boyfriend and I had stayed here for a few nights. The staff was friendly, we didn’t have any problems. The room was clean and bigger than we had expected. There is free wifi, which was great, and its location is quite perfect.
Oh and I forgot my shampoo/​conditioner so when I showered I used theirs, which normally hotel shampoos and conditioners SUCK but I actually really liked their shampoo and conditioner, my hair was so soft! I was very impressed! Lol
Three stars because the heater wasn’t working, as well as the fact we could hear everything going on both outside, downstairs, and in our neighbors room… and I do mean EVERYTHING…
Would I stay here again? Probably so, just prepared to block out the noise with earplugs.

Did a lot of Unilocal creepin before I finally decided on Hotel Carlton. I requested a room near the top floor away from the elevator after reading about the thin walls & street noise. Glad I did, I had the room furthest from the elevator on the top floor & had a view of the city. In Nob Hill which is close to union square. You can easily walk to union square in 10 minutes or Über. There is no mini fridge but that wasn’t a big deal for me. Cute boutique hotel, felt like I was in a master bedroom & not a hotel which I liked. I missed the wine HH & live music but I’ll be back.

This hotel is so cute. The staff was super friendly and attentive. They do a FREE daily happy hour between 5:30 — 6:00 pm (wine only). It was clean. My room was furnished with really cool accent pieces and the art on the walls was cool.
Why three stars? It was so poorly insulated. I could hear the people in the room next to mine peeing in the early morning. I had to sit up in bed to make sure there wasn’t anyone in my room. When we walked into the room the noise from the street was so «present», I asked my sister to check to see if the windows were open… they weren’t. Needless to say, sleep did not come easily to me during our stay. Which totally sucks… because otherwise this place was awesome.
I’m not sure I’d go back again just because of that. Maybe I would if I used earplugs.
The neighborhood was fine too. However, the not too nice neighborhood was very nearby. Homelessness is a big issue in the city, and there were plenty of the afflicted nearby… but they left us alone and it didn’t really bug us.

I found this hotel on Unilocal and, for the most part, I am glad I did. I made the reservation over the phone with a very professional and polite young lady. I received a confirmation email right away, as well as a follow up a few days before check in.
We arrived a few hours before check in, but luckily our room was ready and we were taken care of right away. My car was also valeted at check in as well ($ 35 per night — hotel only has valet, no self parking). Our room was small, but not too small but SF standards. I liked the décor of the room and the bathroom. It came with a Keurig coffee maker and some Tilly’s coffee pods. There is no mini fridge or microwave which would have been nice to have. The pillows and mattresses were a little too firm for my liking, but everyone has their own preference.
The hotel has a complimentary wine reception for a half hour in the evening, which I thought was a great perk. They also had live music during that time as well. They also have complimentary umbrellas you can borrow, which paid off because it was raining for part of our stay and we didn’t bring anything for the weather. There is a delicious, and pricey, restaurant in the hotel as well. It is walking distance to many locations such as Chinatown, Union Square, etc.
The only negative I can really thing of is the noise level. Our room was facing a busy, and loud Sutter St. It was so loud it seemed as though the windows were open because we could hear EVERYTHING. In addition, our room was right next to the elevators so we hear people chatting outside of them all throughout the night, which made it difficult to sleep. I was still exhausted when I got up the next morning. Unfortunately, not getting sleep is a BIG CON for me when it comes to a hotel. Other than that, we were very pleased with our stay.

I stayed here for 3 weeks a month ago with work. The team were great, very accommodating. I wanted something not too central, so if you think you’re going to be walking distance from union sq/​downtown you’re not.
The rooms are fine, the lifts are good. I had a few problems with my key card system so they actually ended up replacing the lock.
The daily drinks parties are a nice way to meet people and wind down your day.
I didn’t eat in the restaurant but did have a few glasses of wine from there and it looked nice.

I stayed here for 3 days while in San Francisco. I must have had one of the older rooms. I got a good deal through the Oracle conference. I was on the first level. It was noisy and I could hear everything outside my room. The room was comfortable and had everything I needed. The closet was huge but the motion detector to activate the light was not working. The front desk staff was friendly and check in and out was easy. Location is also not far from the financial district or the bay which is a plus.

Great little boutique-​y hotel. It’s SF so don’t expect large expansive rooms, but they are clean, well maintained, and decorated on a fresh eclectic way.
They have happy hour in the evenings with complimentary wine and usually a live band. People like to hang out in their lobby and enjoy the music and wine. A great vibe to the place.
I stayed for a week for a work-​related conference. My co-​worker also stayed there and one night she had dinner in the restaurant, which she enjoyed very much. She actually ordered some take out on our last day too. I didn’t try it, but she has very good taste so that’s worth a lot to me.
Why not 5 stars? To me that’s a rare thing. This place is pretty darn good though. I’d come back for sure.

Hôtel très sympathique dans lequel nous nous sommes arrêtés durant trois nuits à San Francisco.
Le personnel à l’accueil est très agréable et à l’écoute.
L’établissement en général est très propre et la décoration est très cosy.
De plus l’hôtel est très bien placé (à10 minutes d’union square) ce qui nous a permis de découvrir la ville à pied.
Nous nous sommes également sentis à l’aise dans notre chambre lumineuse et confortable.
Seul bémol pour lequel je né mettrai pas 5 étoiles: l’ insonorisation est mauvaise. Nous entendions mot pour mot les conversations des voisins à travers une porte communiquante entre les chambres.

Though it’s an older building it is well maintained and clean. The age of the building only adds to the charm. The lobby area is pretty and quaint, the staff is incredibly friendly and accommodating.
We had a 6^th floor room which was appreciated (given reviews for noise levels below 3^rd floor). Our room was a delight. Plenty of room for the two of us. King size bed was comfortable and clean. There is no AC but we opened the windows and enjoyed the cool air and ceiling fan was enough to cool the room down.
What makes this hotel stand out? Location is great for younger crowds wanting to partake in the nightlife. You must try Fly (next door) for at least one dinner and/​or drinks. FREE WIFI!!! That’s right! FREE WIFI. That’s important and impossible to find nowadays — and good for when your husband gets too drunk too early at the bar next door and crashes before 10 pm! HOSTED wine reception from 530 – 630 and live music from Snazz is a great charming and fun way to begin your evening.
Elevator was slow but really… are we that much in a rush that we can’t enjoy a few minutes of down time? If so, take the stairs. We did. They were convenient, charming and not sketchy like you would find a huge commercial hotel.
Bottom line, would I stay here again? In a heartbeat. c

Hotel Carlton is a cute, cozy boutique hotel located in Tenderloin area of San Francisco. As expected it is an old building, but they’ve done a nice job giving it a sort of funky, fresh, updated look. I was told that they had a wine reception in the lobby, but I was not able to join– nice touch. The room was clean and comfortable, and the rate was more than reasonable. Parking a vehicle is pretty steep ($ 35), but that’s typical for SF.
All in all, if I wanted a place in the Tenderloin, I would not hesitate to come back to Hotel Carlton.

Das Hotel Carlton ear bei unserem 3 Wochen Roadtrip das schönste unserer Hotels. Toller Service und schöné Lage direkt an der Sutter Street. Man kann gemütlich in die Stadt und zum Hafen laufen wenn man nicht ganz fußkrank ist und die direkt anliegende Polk Street bietet Abends mit ihren vielen Bars tolle Möglichkeiten.
Jeden Abend gab es eine kostenlose Weinprobe im Hotel mit abskurem aber lustigem DJ in der Lobby. Wir haben uns dieser allerdings immer entzogen, wer aber mit anderen Gästen gerne in Kontakt kommen möchte kann dies hier wunderbar.
Unser Zimmer war sehr schön und sauber, wenn auch nachts etwas lauter. Die Wände könnten durchaus dicker sein.
Alles in allem ein toller Aufenthalt zu einem angemessenen Preis.
