History

Established in 1989.

HPP was founded by nurse practitioner Martha Ryan to provide prenatal care to women who would otherwise not receive it, putting both their health and that of their babies at risk. The agency realized early on its clients experienced obstacles to stability that prenatal care alone could not address. Their pregnancies were invariably complicated by the challenges of poverty, domestic violence, mental health, substance abuse, child abuse, parent/child separation, incarceration and limited education and job opportunities. Unless these obstacles could be overcome, the health and future of their families would always be at risk.

While the agency maintains that pregnancy presents an opportunity for positive change, HPP is now a family resource center with a broader mission — to strengthen families in order to end childhood poverty.
