Fantastic selection! I spent quite a bit of time looking at the vintage hats, ties and vests. I ended up buying a cool tie for a friend.
Everything here looked well kept and must have been carefully selected. The prices were not too crazy either. Definitely worth a look.

Yo fashion gets recycled so tybg this place exists. They have a variety of stuff ranging from waaay-​back prom dresses, tie-​dye shirts, military jackets, garter belts, scarves and sunglasses to wigs and maxi skirts. If you’re looking for something vintage-​y, you’ll definitely find it here and even if you’re not looking for something, you’ll still probably find something cool. I ended up taking home a cool rainbow gradient scarf that I probably would never stumble upon or see anywhere else. It’s an awesome place to thrift or even just explore. Plenty of mirrors around and great vintage-​y vibes.

Good stuff, good stuff, and it doesnt smell or anything. appreciate how well-​organized everything is as well. only complaint would be their strict «no-​returns or exchanges» policy. my brother purchased 2 hats (found in the meat locker room) for $ 40 each, and later concluded that one of them was too small and wouldnt stretch out. two days later we came back to try to convince them to allow for an exchange, but it was a no-​go. fair enough, since theres a sign saying that! but i wish they didnt have to be so strict.

I never understood why chesty girls talk about being busty as both a blessing and curse… and then I got invited to a roaring 20s party and realized my options were basically different fringed and shiny variations on burlap sacks.
It’s just not a great look if you’re rack-​y, but otherwise not so curvy. No matter what you do, you’ll probably end up looking 60-​lbs heavier than you are or like you possibly work in the world’s oldest profession. Oh, a curse… I get it now.
I came to the Haight specifically to patronize Held Over in hopes of finding a Gatsby gal-​type costume for a work event and thought this would surely be the place to find it given the luck other Unilocalers had when searching for 20s-​era style dresses. Unfortunately for me, I think I got here a little too tale in the game because the only 20s-​ish style dresses were in far larger sizes than I would be able to pull off (read: I put them on over my hear and they dropped completely to the floor), or they fit on most of my body, but my bubbies would definitely need a completely separate outfit for themselves because they just don’t fit in this sh*t.
The staff here were super helpful and compared to the 9 other shops I went to, this was by far and away the most affordable for any type of vintage and/​or costume attire and their quality was one of the best as well. I’d come back in a heartbeat just to peruse for gems, as i’m sure this shop it chick full of ‘em hiding in the era-​separated racks. I especially like that their selection of ultra vintage wares is more wearable than costume-​y so you can plan to get a whole ‘nother lifetime worth of wear out of whatever you find at Held Over.

Held Over is a nice random thrift store which has an extensive collection of both high and low end brands.
Personally I came in here looking for a good olé grandpa sweater I can throw on since I forgot my jacket in SJ, and not only did I find something but I found 2 great finds for the right price.
Definitely coming back to check up on some more hidden gems.

I have been in here many times. They have a great collection of 50s 60s 70s items of all kinds. Which is the ONLY reason I return.
This is the DEFINITION of bad customer service. Every single employee here makes you feel as though you are a guest in their home and asking for ANYTHING is a great inconvenience to them. I was most recently looking for a white Marilyn halter dress, and tried to get the attention of the two fitting room girls who were completely engrossed in something on their phone, and when I asked I get a roll of the eyes and a half handed attempt to find something (the one girl pulled out a dress covered in print. Not what I was looking for) and when I rejected the suggestion they immediately gave up helping and returned to their spot behind the iphone.
I literally once asked a girl ringing me up if it was horrible working there, because everyone always has a stank face on. She said «it’s not busy, so we’re bored». How ironic that when someone actually needs something you are of no help, and you make people feel bad about asking for it.
I never write reviews, and I write this one in hopes that Held Over will read it and do something about the pretentious, lazy, cranky, bitchy way they handle their customers. Please and thank you.

This place is sooooo incredible. Like seriously a magical haven of vintage wondrousness. Where to start? The selection is HUGE. Racks on racks on racks of clothes, all organized well enough that it doesn’t feel overwhelming. The stuff is mostly divided up by decade — 50’s, 60’s, 70’s, etc — but they’ve got large sections of leather, tshirts, sweaters and the like as well. Prices are moderate; this definitely isn’t the Goodwill, but you get what you pay for. I nabbed a sweet old ringer tee for $ 10, and have paid $ 30 for a dress here. Worth it! Unique finds for sure. Be prepared to spend a ton, and love every minute of it.

It was my first Burning Man and the experience called for something fun, different and way beyond my everyday wardrobe.
After exploring numerous racks of sartorial possibilities came across a brilliant velvet jacket and fur vest. Both would be accented with lights. But of course.
For less than $ 100 had something that was perfect for the occasion. Week ended up being so much fun. Especially with proper attire.

I needed a dress for a 20’s themed party and Haight Street immediately popped into my mind. I used to live in the neighborhood, so I’m familiar with the different vintage shops. I popped into a few different stores, but I had a gut feeling I would find something at Held Over. Thankfully I was right! I found an amazing dress that fit perfectly and it was much cheaper than the one at the store down the block. What I love about this store is everything is organized by the time period, so you can easily find whatever it is your looking for. I will definitely be back!

This is the only vintage shop you need to go to in the Haight.
You’re welcome, I just saved you worlds of grief, frustration and anxiety. Upper Haight crowds can be/​are the absolute worst, so you want to choose your stops wisely.
Vintage stores on Haight St. are mostly geared towards men’s clothing. While this is still true for Held Over, they have the best selection of women’s vintage clothing on the block. You can find every kind of blouse, they have buckets of furs, multiple stands of hats, and rack after rack of dresses.
If you are male/​masculine: go to the back room of blazers. It is blazer heaven. Do you want your man to be a little more dapper? Take him here.
Prices vary by quality. I bought a $ 10 polka dot blouse here at the same time my friend bought a $ 100 blazer.

Very large selection of items from every line and accessories you may need. Prices are reasonable as far as I could tell and for what you may pay for a period costume cheaply made at a party store you may find what you want here for the same price but better quality
I got a tuxedo jacket and shirt with hat, cuffs, bow tie for $ 100. Staff was friendly and place was well organized. They have done a good job here. I didn’t need to go anywhere else to find anything else.
They had a very nice deep purple suit I would have got or one of the baby blue suit but I am to tall and slender. Oh well. Happy shopping.

Now this is the kind of vintage store I’ve been looking for.
Absolutely everything in the store is labeled, so you can glide right over to the leather jacket section or remind yourself where you are when you get lost in vintage euphoria. The organization and classification of the dresses is especially appreciated. Rather than sift through racks and racks of indiscernible dress-​like cloths, I can delightfully look over the «hippie chic» or the «70s disco» or buy a «70s/​80s secretary dress» that I look AH-​mazing in. Not even being conceited, the dress is simply incredible. And very reasonably priced!
The tops are cute, the dresses are cute, the sweaters are cute. They have normal-​people sizes (!) and not tiny-​people-​of-​the-​past Twiggy sizes (though there’s plenty of those, too.) I just don’t know what else I could ask for!

They use the term vintage so that they can charge more for used clothing. I saw one item that had an old tag from another thrift store at $ 4, and Held Over’s price was $ 26.
That being said, I got an awesome sweater for an ugly sweater party over the weekend. But, I had to pay $ 50 for an ugly, used, itchy sweater. But everyone loved it, and I’m happy with my purchase. When the occasion calls, I would shop here again.

This is my 100^th review! Yay!
I had a lot of fun in this store. First of all, it was requested that you check any shopping bags brought in, which I did. I received a token to reclaim my bag. I was glad that I did not have to carry that bag around because it would have just been in the way. So much to see!
Clothing was organized on racks according to style and period. I found the cutest green and white polka dot 1970’s mini from Sears. The price was reasonable, and it was in good condition.
Will definitely return when in San Francisco.

If you’re a woman looking to buy a costume that’s not garish, overly slutty or highly bizarre, this is simply the best place to go. The costumes are all neatly organized and labeled by style (e.g. «Flappers», «70s Disco», «Royalty», «Victorian»), generally good quality material and craftsmanship (I’ve been in a seamstress for years so I know what I’m talking about) and best of all, very affordable.
My friend and I were absolutely floored to find elaborate medieval/​renaissance-​style gowns with lace, ruffles, trims, buttons and other accessories for under $ 40. They would easily cost twice as much at a costume rental store! Yes, they’re secondhand and have been worn before… but then, so have costumes at a rental store.
All this explains why I, a normally frugal and un-​materialistic person who hates buying unnecessary «stuff» (and I’d say a once-​a-​year costume is definitely unnecessary), ended up walking out of this store with a beautiful gothic-​style gown. I definitely did not come in here intending to do anything more than browse, but I don’t regret my decision at all. Bonus: The staff are really nice.

I scored the cutest-​ever red vintage purse here. Yesss.
Reasons why Held Over is awesome, in no particular order:

–it’s all categorized and compartmentalized neatly and accurately for your browsing pleasure
–a good assortment of both men’s and women’s wares
–rad ass spoken word shit was playing the first time I was there, and Tom Waits the second time (I think)
–an entire section dedicated to leather shorts… seriously, who has that?!
–takes itself seriously and it shows in the best way possible
