Hao Kha, DDS

This review is long overdue. My wife and I have been going to Dr. Kha for any major dental work for about 5 years. He is extremely good at what he does, but at the same time he is gentle and empathetic. It’s really hard to find a good dentist, so we find ourselves going back to Dr. Kha even after moving to the South Bay because of unpleasant experiences with some other local dentists in the area.

So professional. Had Dr. Nguyen and Sandy. They explain everything they do as they’re doing it so there are no surprises. Very professional, friendly, and not at all rushed. This is my new go-​to dentist in SF.

Unfortunately I was assigned the associate dentist here and the work that was done on my teeth has proven to be very poor. I had a crown fitted and was kicking and screaming in agony. On the same day I had a filling on the other side of my mouth, the numbness and paralysis of my face did not wear off by the time I went to bed that night, 6 hours later. Both were extremely painful to bite on for months. After 6 weeks I called to see if they could be checked and was told to wait another month. I finally went in and they told me nothing was wrong and just to wait longer.
I was recently seen by my new dentist who pointed out on my x-​rays that the crown is way to big and could potentially lead to problems as it is hard to clean The filling is also too big and the wrong shape at the top, curving out instead of in. Again potentially leading to big problems in the future.
I would recommend going elsewhere.

Good cleaning but I felt like I was being upsold. He tried to convince me to have more work done and told me my teeth showed decay. I checked with another dentist and they said my teeth were fine. I felt like he was trying to get more work. When I pushed back he said I could wait but I felt like he was implying it was a mistake. He also asked «do you like your smile» that made me feel like he didn’t. The cleaning was good though and he does have modern nice equipment and other than the upsell he seemed nice.

Going to the dentist… one of the most dreaded experiences in life… is made infinitely better when you visit someone like Dr. Kha. I came in to fix a damaged filling and Dr. Kha noticed I could use a cleaning, too, and insisted I bundle the two procedures together that day to save a visit and on insurance charges. He was candid about how I could take better care of my teeth, but in an approachable tone (he’s all-​around a super friendly guy). This’ll definitely be my regular dental office from now on!

My husband and I now consider this our go-​to dentist. Location can’t be beat if you live in Glen Park. The office is clean, with new equipment, and the staff is all very nice. They walked me through the details of my insurance coverage so that there were no surprises.
One star off because Dr. Kha didn’t seem all that interested in my mouth guard, which I’ve used for years, and didn’t check my gum numbers. Just seems weird that these things were overlooked.

Dr. Kha is a great dentist, and has great staff to boot. I’ve been a patient for maybe two years now, and I came in with plenty of work to be done. I can’t imagine going anywhere else!

Background:
I’ve never enjoyed the dentist. I probably haven’t gone for a solid 2 years. I’ve always found them vaguely abrasive individuals, consistently painful experiences, and overall a legitimately unpleasant yearly ritual. I’ve always handled it well (let them do their horrors upon me, saying nothing as they hurt my gums/​mouth or abused my taste buds), but always left feeling pain of some sort or another and a vague feeling I’d just been assaulted by someone who could have not hurt me if they’d taken the time to spare a thought for my feelings.
Not this time.
Experience:
First interaction beyond pleasantries: the dental assistant was very sweet and explained people with small mouths might find the x-​ray machine uncomfortable and to let her know so she could use a different method if I experienced discomfort. I’ve previously been the victim of (clearly) sadist dentists because, while it was uncomfortable, it didn’t register on the scale of pain I’ve come to expect from the dentist-​folks (yes, even for something as simple and seemingly painless as x-​rays) and I have quite a small mouth (likely motivating her comment). The dentist also walked me through how he was analyzing the x-​rays, which made me feel informed rather than at the mercy of an expert.
This conscientious trend continued; before they did anything they checked in to make sure I knew what was about to happen and to raise my left hand if I were ever uncomfortable during any portion of the cleaning. They stopped if my body language showed I was in any discomfort to check in, even if I hadn’t raised my hand. Not only were they verbally checking in, but their choice of implements clearly had taken into account the maxim «do no harm» because instead of cleaning my teeth with just a basic scraper they had some vibrating scraper that made it SIGNIFICANTLY less painful and applied it with care.
Further, when I expressed distaste (tact is not my forte) for the polishing experience (always tastes nasty), the dentist offered not to do it and explained it was a selective, cosmetic procedure so I wouldn’t be putting my teeth in danger by opting out but that it was included in the price.
Thorough. Honest. Straightforward. Thoughtful.
Loved it.
Post-​Experience:
I was explicit about why’d I’d come in (I’d noticed significant tartar buildup on the back of my front lower teeth) and they made sure to let me know because I’d had so much tartar my teeth might feel a bit «loose» for a few hours after the cleaning but it was an illusion and as soon as my tongue got used to the new spaces it would go away. Great communication!
Facts:
* I got the new patient special for $ 250 which included x-​rays, cleaning, and exam
* have my next appointment scheduled for six months from now
* they recorded on my chart which teeth they were keeping an eye on and why
* they found nothing that required further care (indicating, to me, they aren’t scam artists out to make some quick cash on my own lack of dental knowledge beyond ‘pain’ and ‘no pain’)
* was an easy location to get to and easy to find

First time visit to Diamond Dental and Dr. Kha. He and his staff were extremely courteous and his communication regarding my next steps of treatment were very articulate and helpful. And, wait for it… ON A SATURDAY MORNING… which nobody does. Highly recommended indeed.

I hate going to the dentist, high pitched noises and a sense of helpless dread carried over from childhood. Anyway Dr. Kha is a nice professional, the office is an efficient well designed place. For the X-​Rays I didn’t even have to move rooms the equiptment was well hidden in a cabinet I assumed had office supplies. The front desk was straightforward and unpushy about billing and services.
That I can’t find anything to complain about is amazing. Competent office that did not trigger anxiety, just great. I still don’t like going to the dentist, but I’m going back to Dr. Kha.

I have lived in Glen Park since 1994. I have used other dentists in SF, including in Glen Park. However, I have settled with Dr. Kha. He provides excellent and attentive services. He is open on Saturdays. I have been very pleased and feel very fortunate to be able to walk to my neighborhood dentist and get amazing service! I started coming here a few years ago but finally got around to writing my review. A colleague is considering a new dentist and I recommended Dr. Kha. Part of my recommendation was to review Unilocal reviews, and I am not surprised to see similar positive reviews.

Finding a good dentist is like finding a good car mechanic. I went to a few other dentists before I found Dr Kha. I’m recognized when I enter the office and not just the name with the appointment. Dr Kha is honest, thorough, and all the while friendly.

My friend Leslie who is also a client here referred me to Diamond Dental. I want to say thank you DR. Hao and Assistant Michelle for taking care of me. They did an amazing job with my ZOOM whitening and correcting a single Dead Tooth I had at the center of my smile. Dr. Hao was very honest, informative, and straight forward with my aesthetic desires for a veneer to correct this dead tooth. But not only did he exceed any expectations, he did an amazing job of carefully molding the new veneer to fit perfectly with the rest of my teeth. Amazing Job and Thank you DR. Hao and Michelle. I am very happy.

I lost my dental insurance 2 years ago but I still consider Dr. Kha «my dentist» and I plan on going back as soon as I can save up the money for their (very reasonable) fee. Like most people, I hate going to the dentist and Diamond Dental is no exception — let’s be real — but it’s the most enjoyable dental experience I’ve ever had. Dr. Kha is gentle, patient with my TINY mouth and HUGE anxiety, and the front desk staff is sweet and friendly. In fact, last year when I had to see an implant specialist, they lent me my x-​rays (even though at that point I hadn’t been in to the office in over a year) so I could show them to the specialist. Talk about «above and beyond» !! I’m moving back to the neighborhood and I am actually kinda excited to go back to Diamond Dental. How weird is that.

I had 3 deep cavities repaired by Dr Kha over a 4 week period. Great Dentist. My lower rear jaw is difficult to numb. I feel drilling. It hurts. Been like this all my life. Consequently I have dental anxiety. Over the years I’ve had good and bad dentists. I just switched to Dr Kha as I now live in Glen Park. He filled the 3 cavities over 3 appointments. During the 2^nd appointment we ran into problems with pain during drilling. Dr Kha was patient and caring, he tried different kinds of injections and we got through it. For my last appointment Dr Kha was prepared for just what I needed. Extra time was scheduled and he gave me 2 types of injections, neither of which was painful, and then the drilling for the cavity went fine without any pain at all. The dental assistant and receptionist also remembered me and were concerned about my treatment. Will definitely be sticking with Diamond Dental. Thanks Dr Kha and team.
… and 8 month later those difficult deep cavity repairs worked great and I am sticking with Dr Kha despite moving to the east bay.

Dr. Kha and his team at Diamond Dental are exactly what I was looking for in a dental office — -excellent, no-​nonsense dental care at a reasonable price. I was getting rather exhausted by the constant up sell every time I visited my previous boutiquey dentist office — -teeth whitening, Invisalign, bite guards, etc. etc. Every time I visited, it seemed they were trying to sell me something.
Diamond Dental is a nice change of pace. My exam/​prophylaxis was easy, thorough and painless. Dr. Kha is very straightforward, explains things well, and educates his patients. He made a spot-​on diagnosis when he suspected that a problematic, painful tooth with a previous root canal had a missed canal and referred me to an excellent endodontist to get the problem taken care of. The super-​accommodating, nice receptionist even squeezed me in on very short notice for an appointment when a temporary filling fell out just prior to a big trip. I could not recommend this office and Dr. Kha enough!

Dr. Kha and his team are the best! Before finding Diamond Dental, I was that lady who would go to a dental office for one visit and then move on. A dental «goldilocks», if you will.
The last dentist I saw was gearing me up for a bunch of expensive treatments for gum disease, that Dr. Kha said I don’t have! Two years later, I’m still doing great and have only needed routine cleanings. Thanks Dr. Kha for being so friendly, gentle and thorough. I also appreciate how accommodating you and your team have been when I have needed to bring my little one. You guys rock!
Easy street parking and walking distance from BART add to the positive experience. I would give 10 stars if I could!

Dr. Kha is the best dentist I’ve ever had. He’s kind, knowledgeable, and gentle. I’ve had several routine exams with him as well as a filling. He explained to me ahead of time that my cavity was deep and if he had to drill in far enough he’d expose the nerve and I’d need a root canal. He prepared me for it, but was careful enough that a filling wound up doing the job. I respect his honesty.
But if I could give him 10 stars I would. My mom came to visit and wound up losing a crown and chipping a molar — she was in pain and does not have dental insurance. He saw her immediately and gave her a temporary fix until she could get home to her dentist. He waived most of the fees and I don’t remember how much he charged her but it was ridiculously cheap. I wanna say it was less than $ 100.
I am not surprised he’s got nothing but 5 star reviews on Unilocal.If I didn’t live so close to his office I’d travel to get to there.

To be honest, I sent my girlfriend here first to see if Dr. Kha is a good dentist. My girlfriend kept bugging me, you need to see a dentist, it has been too long. I told her, I’m fine, nothing hurts. I brush 2x a day. Sure enough, when I visited Dr. Kha, the first time for a routine check up, bad news. 4 cavities, one piece of my back tooth broke off and I didn’t know about it. I was like, WTF.
Dr. Kha knows his teeth but what makes him stand out among the rest are the following:
— Doesn’t try to up sell you and explains what needs to be done. In fact, while I was sitting on the dentist chair, he showed me with his little mirror reflected back to a larger mirror where each of my cavities were.
No crazy expensive 360 degree 3D x rays that your insurance doesn’t cover here.
— Staff here are friendly and I was given some free dental stuff.
— Quick and painless, I hardly felt a thing, 3 visits, teeth cleaned, 4 cavities filled. I didn’t have to sit long for each visit.
— So far so good, the fillings are holding up. No pain. No discomfort. Good job.
Hooray for Dr. Kha, Hooray for staff at Diamond Dental, Hooray for me!

There are two dental offices in Glen Park. One charges an arm and a leg, tries to sell you all kinds of dental services you may or may not need, gives you Valium and THEN tries to discuss fees with you, and so on. The other is Diamond Dental, helmed by Dr. Kha and aided by his friendly staff.
Although I have healthy teeth, I have sensitive teeth and gums. I was reduced to hysterical tears by another dentist who used the ultrasonic water-​based cleaning machine and refused to stop even when it hurt because they claimed there was no alternative (nevermind that dentists cleaned people’s teeth by hand for decades before the stupid machine was invented).
Dr. Kha is not only willing to hand-​clean my teeth, but he has notes on his file for me that I prefer it that way, as well as a couple of other preferences of mine. He doesn’t miss a beat, he’s gentle, he’s patient and takes his time with people who struggle in the dentist chair. He doesn’t try to upsell you while he’s got his hands in your mouth, and he’s fair with his pricing and services.
Really wonderful dentist. Don’t go to the other guys.
