History

Established in 2012.

We were founded by engineers Shawn Drost, Tony Phillips, Marcus Phillips and Doug Calhoun in the fall of 2012. Early on we wanted to rethink how programmers were trained — from the philosophical to the practical. We’ve been teaching software engineering, computer science and fundamentals, not just complex frameworks.

Immersive apprenticeship delivers real world experience. /DEV Product Development Sprint Services allow students to build sellable product for clients as they learn. All in all we are re-imagining a computer science degree for the 21st century.

Meet the Business Owner

Anthony P.

Business Owner

Tony co-founded Hack Reactor drawing from his time designing language curriculum in South Korea as a Fulbright Scholar, managing language immersion schools, a stint teaching Rails at Dev Bootcamp and his own self-guided experience learning Ruby and JavaScript.

Shawn D. began coding at 15 and was teaching pointer arithmetic and class hierarchies by 17. He studied CS at USC and has been a Software Engineer ever since, leading a tech team at OKCupid Labs. He runs the self-directed project period and the graduate hiring program.

Marcus P. is the CTO and Head of Instruction, directing curriculum and the software that supports it and running JavaScript training tracks for JSConf and HTML5 DevConf. Previously, he led technical training initiatives at Twitter and worked on JavaScript framework internals.

Doug C. is an Instructor who learned web development with Tony. His personal mission is to roam the halls of Hack Reactor and turn distraction into focus and frustration into fascination.
