Great friendly neighborhood store.
The guys here are nice and friendly. It can look like it could use some sprucing up but the guys in here are great.
They were even open on Christmas Day to take care of people in the neighborhood.

BEST Customer Service!
I desperately needed a great gift basket created for a friend, we’re in Minneapolis so I needed help achieving this on short notice. Charlie answered my call and nailed it out of the park!
He listened to exactly what I wanted, made suggestions and within 24 hrs delivered a basket with 2 nice bottles of wine, cracker, cheeses and chocolates just in time for our friend’s Birthday!
Great price, excellent service and even wished our friend Happy Birthday!
Keep it local and give them your business, they certainly deserve it!

This place is awesome! All I have to say is that this place is open late and when others are closed Charlie will make you his signature «Charlie Hustle». Probably the most incredible sandwich. Fresh bread. Turkey. Pesto. All the toppings. Really hits the spot.

I just ate the specialty pastrami, Screaming Abe sando. Super legit. They’re always nice in here, and even though it feels a bit cluttered, they have all the corner store essentials plus a place to sit, watch sports and eat your sandwich while you wait for your laundry across the street. Can’t ask for much more than that.

I’ve lived across the street from H &W since spring 2010, and they have always been just the best corner store you could ask for. It’s family-​run, and Charlie (one of the sons) is awesome — they watch out for the neighborhood. Also they’ve recently renovated and improved their deli w/​lots of food options. They even serve food late on weekends (drunk post-​bar ground sirloin nachos, hello?!) and update their selection based on what customers ask for. Their beer /​wine /​liquor selection (obviously) is awesome but they also have a lot of useful household items, packaged goods, and fresh things like LIMES that come in really handy when your friend brings Coronas over but forgets that Corona tastes like ass without lime. H&W is really more like a convenience /​corner store than just a liquor store. Definitely the best corner store in all of Hayes Valley /​Alamo Square.

I’ve been going to H&W since I moved back into the neighborhood about 2 years ago. These guys are great. Super personable and nice (I always get hooked up on my birthday if I go in, if I’m short some change or a dollar I can swing it by later).
Fellow shoppers carry the charm of the neighborhood — young techie hipsters and the folks that were making this neighborhood their home long before Ritual or Blue Bottle ever showed their faces around here. My favorite experiences include any involving cute dogs, and the time some random guy asked me where the Italian sausages were in the store (I DON’T WORK HERE DUDE, OBVIOUSLY).
Plus it’s really funny that they’re on Instagram.

Basically, this place has kept me alive by selling goat cheese and crackers and iced cold Diet Coke. (as in their cooler is cold enough to give you that perfect patina of ice at the top of your soda on a hot day)
It definitely is an authentic joint, from the Mom and Pops and Clan who run the show, to the parakeets chirping in their cages, to the salted dogs wandering in and out for 40’s.
If you live in my neighborhood, and need a pack of Kools and some Brie at 9 PM on a Tuesday, this is where you go.
They know me, they’re good people, they run a clean and down to earth store. What more do you want from a cornershop?

This place is alright. It draws some unsavory characters, but they have a great selection of ice cream and wine, and they have beer singles. Also, the owners are really nice. Basically, it don’t look too great, but don’t let that discourage you.
There are birds in cages up above the fridges, which is kind of quaint.
I wish they were open later, but I’ll take what I can get from a place that’s just across the street.

I’m so grateful they had their act together during Bay to Breakers yesterday! One person at the register and two others posted up around the store to take cash transactions allowed me to avoid standing in line behind the nude guy. Things were moving quickly and smoothly thanks to their smart setup.

Dropped in here while doing Bay to Breakers. They charged me almost twice what was listed on their refrigerator door. «$ 11 for a six-​pack of Coors?» He just shrugged at me.
Probably a good business move, but I thought it was a little ethically unsound. Man, wish I lived near here so I could go to the other liquor store down the street.

This place is dangerously close to my house! Dangerous as in they have an excellent selection of Ben & Jerry’s products and 3 flavors (I think) of It’s-Its! Man, I wish I could eat an It’s It every day. It’s exactly half-​way between my house and my friend’s house (um, half a block each — told you it was dangerously close!), and we once drove a mutual friend crazy talking about the fact that they have cheese (sorry, Jen!). But they do! For such a tiny store, they’ve got a great selection and even have recycled paper products — yay! — and they have a surprisingly good wine selection! The staff is so nice and they recently recommended a nice, affordable Italian wine that went great with the meal I was making. Great neighborhood store!

This is my new favorite weekday brunch place.

I know but it is a great liquor store. I came in hung-​ry and hung-​over. I needed something to get me going. I ordered a Charlie Hustle with extra meat from the small deli over in the corner. Some coffee. I came out of the store with a fat sandwich and a tall cup of coffee all for $ 8.50. The sandwich was many layers of turkey, pepper jack cheese and pesto. I was full, but then I downed the coffee which cleared out some room (if you know what I mean) and finished the sandwich.
Aside from this, if I had wanted to keep going, they have an excellent selection of 6-​packs, ranging from many of the Lagunitas varieties to Hoegaarden and even Carlsberg for good measure. They do have your usual suspects as far as the 40 ozs are concerned. As my pal Rusty O. would say, «You know you’re a gangster when your drink has an ‘out the door’ price on it.»

Except for the decrepit drunks who keep banging on the door at 3 in the morning, I think this liquor store is just fine and dandy!
They sell a variety of alcohols and liquors, and not just 40 ouncers but they actually carry a decent stock of high end spirits and wines. Early on in my relationship with my now wife, we were in need of some Veuve Cliquot champagne, and I was able to acquire it here, for a fee, naturally, far superior to what one would have paid at Costco, say, or Trader Joe’s.
They sell Bombay Sapphire, Anchor Steam, and of course, your basic food items and staples: coffee, bread, cereal, milk, mac & cheese, chips and cookies… All the good stuff your body craves at 1 in the morning when you’re way too lit to walk, let alone drive, more than 50 feet to get some grub (or more fuel, as the case may be).
Now if only they could get rid of those drunken bums who keep banging on the door at 3 in the morning…
