Had my transmission replaced. Best pricing I could find after extensive research. Tom was patient when I needed to use several different credit cards, let me know I should replace a shock while the car was up on the lift and apart. He showed me the old parts afterward (which I like) and explained all the work that was done when I picked up my car. They have been in their location for 35 years and they are a service throwback, for sure! Definitely recommend!

Rebuilt synchros on 99 RAV4. Clutch was done at the same time and some other supporting work.
Works terrific, like new. I’m writing this about 6 months after the work. Totally worth the $ 3500. Came with industry standard 1 year warranty.
Service was relatively fast and most of all no sales pressure. I received phone calls about all the issues as they were detected and agreed to all the work.
I held my breath a little and used my credit card for more purchasing protection. It all worked out great, very crisp and accurate shifting and good clutch.
I knew that a tranny rebuild was going to cost at least $ 3000 and I know something about cars. I researched several other places before taking my chances with H&P. The AAMCO in Oakland has a 5 star BBB rating but pretty bad customer reviews so I decided BBB wasn’t the way to go. I was worried that after spending so much, if the work wasn’t good enough how would I recoup the loss.
Be prepared to spend for any transmission work and focus on getting value. I think H&P provides excellent value.

I like Tom. Very nice guy and able to negotiate a good price. They are right across the street from me.
They are transmission specialized and did a good job flushing my tranny. Forgot to reset the computer though, but I came back. No biggie.
I will definitely come back for tranny or diffy work.

I was referred to Tom by Darryl at Yamato. I had my car towed to H&P after discovering a very steady leak. Tom called me upon receipt of my Jeep and said he would call as soon as he knew where the leak was and give me an estimate. A few hours later he called explained everything thoroughly and gave me an estimate. Two days later I had my car back and the final cost was less than the estimate. Tom was very professional, knowledgeable and has excellent customer service skills.

The only shop in SF I use. Tom is friendly and knowledgeable and takes the time to show me, on my vehicle, what needs to be fixed.
One example: I took my 94 truck in because it was sticking in park, could not move the column shift. They looked at it for days, checking everything, while I searched the internet and braced myself for all kinds of costs to replace all kinds of things it could be. A few days later Tom calls to tell me they tested all those other things and they were fine, probably just the cable needed lube (a pain of a job in itself). They could have taken me for a huge ride, switching out all kinds of parts that did not need it — they didn’t. A hundred bucks later and my truck shifts out of park just fine.
Second example: Replaced an engine mount on my mini-​van there. Took the van in a few months later for an unrelated problem, but Tom noticed that mount had cracked again — they replaced at no charge. Nice to know someone cares about dong a good job and the right thing more than making a buck.
I have two vehicles and take them both there for everything.

Brought in my 95 VW Golf last week, spoke with one of the owners, Michael, whom was very knowledgeable and knew exactly what parts are needed to get rid of the noise that was coming from the front axle/​cv boot. He was honest and straight forward with the costs and the time needed for the job. Will definitely come back for other auto services and recommend this shop to my friends and family. Like the previous reviewer have mentioned, even though they specialize in transmission work, they are also knowledgeable on other engine and misc services.

I had my transmission rebuilt from them and when i picked it up, it felt almost light they didn’t do anything to it. The guy named Michael there said its supposed to be like that. i told him its my car that i drive everyday, i know how it feels. He told me to drive it more and come back if it feels the same. i came back a month later he said they tested it and its OK. OK, I’ll give it another try but two months later, its not getting any better. Brought it back again same story. Until a year later the transmission went out. I brought it back and he told me that the warranty is out and won’t fix it unless i paid more money. Their way of business is to let the warranty run out and make you paid again, I will not bring my car back to them ever or refer anyone there.
