My skills include laptop computer repairs of every sort, including virus and malware removal, hardware upgrades (memory, hard disk, DVD burner, internal and external wireless adapters), performance optimization, and hardware repairs (laptop power jack, LCD screen, keyboard, power supply), wireless networking, DSL/​U-​Verse/​Cable setup, Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 and 8 installation and configuration, and new computer setup. I can also create a custom web domain name with email and/​or web hosting for business or personal use, and perform best-​practices configuration for setup, mail, messaging, and backup. One of my favorite services is to take a slow-​running laptop and return it running 5X faster or more. Sorry, I don’t work on Apple computers or full-​size desktop computers.

History

Established in 2007.

After spending 20 years developing commercial software in a Dilbert-​esque ‘cubicle farm’ setting, only to then become caught in the dot-​com startup mania, I decided to go out on my own and start a small business. So far, I am very pleased with the response I’ve gotten on Yelp*!

I tried numerous times to see a laptop he had listed on Craigslist ($ 325.00), and there was always some reason he was not able to meet. If he is this way in doing repairs, I strongly advise not leaving anything with this guy, you may never get it back.

I came to Rich a few weeks ago to get advice on whether I should fix my old HP laptop. It had given me the black screen of death after 7 years of use (sad face). Rich was very thorough in explaining to me (I have no knowledge with computer repair) that it would be better for me to get a new laptop instead, because the repair costs and troubles will not be worth it. I really appreciated his honest, professional, and courteous opinion.
Rich ended up helping me retrieve data from the broken laptop (~$ 40) and offered me his opinions on what laptop I should purchase next. This was my first experience with a computer repair service, and I could not have asked for better. Highly recommend!

Best buy, actually worst buy, told me replacing the broken screen on my chromebook would be between $ 200-​$ 300. Rich did it for $ 65.

Rich was great. I consulted him on a dropped laptop with a black screen. Although he was not able to open it up at the time, he laid out the possibilities and potential cost. He gave further feedback via email when the screen was still not working but not black.
The other thing Rich did that I highly appreciated was suggesting a second opinion. I ended up popping it open myself (as he suggested it was not too risky to just pop the back) and reattached some wires.
Although I feel a bit of a n00b fir needing help for a loose wire (behind a bunch of screws), Rich was super helpful and informative. He definitely went above and beyond.

I can’t say enough great things about Rich, his customer service, and his professionalism. I’ve hired him twice now for help with my computer, and both times he has been thorough, responsive, honest, and reliable. He’s also fixed both of my problems, which helps! The rest of the reviews are what brought me to call him, and I’m glad I did. He provides consultation for free and was incredibly forthcoming with me. Rich is smart, honest and reliable. He will do everything possible to diagnose and repair your computer (he has worked on my desktop and several laptops), give honest, accurate estimates of the time required, and will always tell you if he doesn’t know or isn’t sure what’s wrong, but will tell you what is required to try and find out. And he’ll explore with you whether the repairs for minor problems are worth the hassle involved in repairing them.

Five stars doesn’t convey what an amazing guy Rich is or how he saved my computer and refused to charge me sufficiently for all the hours spent. My computer was fairly jacked up from dropping it one too many times. Rich had to do some MacGyver gluing to make it all work (which I told him he could do whatever to it because it’s going to recycling if he can’t fix it). But he did and he refused more money. It’s like he LIKES fixing computers for fun!

I dropped my laptop from about 3 feet and it just shut off and I couldn’t turn it back on at all.
It was a huge deal for me since all my work and personal files were only on this laptop, so I panicked a bit but decided to visit Richard!
I think he is a magician! Not only he was able to take some time out of his busy schedule but he also fixed it very quick. I was soooo relieved!
He is very knowledgeable and trustworthy person. Besides all of that he was very kind and gave me extra materials to make my laptop work faster.
So next time I have an issue — without any second thought I know where to bring my laptop.

Beer spilled on laptop at a bar I was to DJ at =[ Thought the old laptop was toast. Went over, his place of work was fascinating, talked through the options and he replaced my keyboard and thoroughly cleansed the inside. I was working on my old hp laptop when suddenly it crashed and the screen went blank on rebooting. I panicked and started looking for anyone who could fix this or help me get the data back. That is when I read about Rich and decided to go to him. Rich is indeed very knowledgeable, patient, sincere, and awesome guy to work with. He knows his stuff really well but will always give you a patient listening. He will try and work out every possible option for you and then let you decide what you would prefer.
I called him before meeting him and after having understood my situation he suggested that I get my mac and external hard drive along. He looked at my problem and showed me what the issue was with the motherboard. He then made sure that my data was safely encased and that it worked on my mac. I could not thank him enough. Go to Rich if you want an honest consultation and service. I would recommend no one but him.

Oh, I cannot think of anything bad to say about my experience! Rich was absolutely amazing! Not only was he extremely accommodating and knowledgeable, his price was fair and he was completely transparent about the price of the part I needed!
When I brought my laptop in for repairs, he knew right from my description just was wrong and made preparations right away. The part I needed was ordered right in front of me and, while some places may mark up the price of parts, Rich made sure I got the fastest shipping and best price available!
Originally, we had planned for me to leave my laptop overnight after I dropped it off at 6:30pm. This was done the day the part arrived. After a few hours, I get a call and he said he was done! He worked extra diligently and fast to get my new laptop fan installed and I couldn’t be happier! This guy definitely went above and beyond what I expected and I will be taking my business to Rich in the future!

Rich at Grey Matters was refreshing to work with.
I needed to repair a burnt out power jack on my Asus zenbook. After calling a half a dozen computer repair services in SF and being told that I needed to send my laptop back to Asus for repair, I finally heard about Rich, seemingly the only person in the city willing and able to resided parts on such a challenging machine. He worked to find the least expensive replacement part and charged me at cost. He was very responsive during the whole process and replaced my shortedout track pad while he was at it. All told he saved me over ~$ 150 over what Asus quoted.

I like that he is willing to repair versus replace fixable laptops that are still meeting my needs. We are so lucky to have Rich’s services available to us.

Really hopeful about this gentleman, my computer has been through a lot externally but still solid on the inside… Rich wasn’t even willing to take a look inside! All I wanted was a new DC Jack. I’ll definitely come here again but I’m a bit confused as to why his online reputation of fixing things the first try is more important than an interested customer.
Being that I was not serviced past the initial 10 second inspection I can’t say much more about this place.

My laptop screen cracked. I didn’t want to buy another computer or have Best Buy etc fix it. My roommate recommended Grey Matter thankfully. It worked out very well. He was really easy to work with and was a very fast turn around. He even ordered the part for me. I will be back when I have another computer issue.

Rich is very knowledgeable, accommodating, great to work with, and reasonably priced. I’ve gone to him twice with laptop repairs. The first time my Toshiba laptop hard drive was failing and of course I was freaked out. He was calm and reassuring, backed up my data, installed a new hard drive, transferred the data, and made suggestions. His price was at least half the cost of a regular repair shop. The second time my laptop had slow performance and also my Vaio would not power up. He diagnosed the problem as maleware (my antivirus had expired) and also my windows system needed to be updated. He uninstalled McAfee (which has always given me problems) and installed a different antivirus as well as an anti-​malware software. My Sony just needed a new power cord which he found a great price. He also cleaned up my Sony from malware. He even cleaned my laptops for free. He does a thorough, detailed job. It’s like having your car detailed… it comes back like new :-).
I’ve referred a friend to him and told several other people about his services. I would definitely recommend him!

I put off my computer needs for months and months on end because I just did not want to deal with the hassle of finding someone who could really help me.
Rich has all the qualities I could have ever hoped for in a computer technician. He is accessible, affordable, patient, and kind!
A true genius of a man, humble — and honest.
He is warm and supportive — and knows how to be reassuring and encouraging to clients.
He knows his trade — knows exactly what he is doing. He absolutely exceeded my expectations.
He got my old computer in perfect shape — and re-​formatted my new computer for use — all in record time.
What was the biggest surprise?
He did EVERYTHING for about a tenth of what I was willing to pay. I absolutely encouraged him to up his prices — this man is worth his weight in gold — and then some!
If its not too much to add — Rich absolutely restored my faith in humanity… the ability to trust a stranger with EVERYTHING — and come out on top!
What a gem!
My only hesitation in writing this review is that he will become so popular — that perhaps he will become difficult to access at some point!

If I could give 10 stars I would.
Rich is amazing, professional and quick. My laptop crashed and I was expecting the worst in needing to re install programs. Nope, Rich was talented enough to save all of my data, got me a faster Hard drive and fixed my cd disc tray that was bent. All in all it was around or less than 24 hours. AMAZING! I CAN NOT STRESS HOW GREAT RICH IS! I will be going to this guy every time now. Not to say other places are not good its just that Rich is very thorough and has very accommodating hours 2−9pm. I dont know any other lap top technician like that.
I 100% recommend Rich for all your PC needs.
