Fresh Air Bicycles

I have been commuting quite a bit lately from San Francisco out to Emeryville and my simple single speed bike has taken a real beating (i’m not easy on it either). I’ve had several flat tires, spokes flying off, etc. EVERY TIME i’ve brought my bike in these guys have given me an honest appraisal of my bike and what my options are. What’s more, i’m super grateful that they have been able to have my bike repaired every time i’ve walked in within hours of dropping it off. This has saved me money by not having to buy cabs, etc because my bike was out of commission. Can’t recommend this place enough!

Fresh Air Bicycles has a great location and a great team of professional staff. Travis has an eye for details and checks for all components optimal performance. The rest of the staff are also kind and caring as well as technically skilled at what they do. If you have any questions any team member there will be happy to help you with your questions. They also carry a nice range of products that other shops just don’t use or have. My personal favorite is Rock N Roll chain lube; this product is amazing because it works great and is easy to use. Lastly it is a nice atmosphere at the shop is always welcoming and easy to enjoy.

BEST SHOP IN TOWN. Always going above and beyond when they work on my bike. Travis is straight up when he’s telling you what’s going on with your bike. He’s not going to up-​sell you, and if your bike needs more than you can afford at the time, he’ll work with your budget. Fresh Air also has a great community vibe. From bike messengers, cyclecross enthusiasts, pro cyclists, families, neighbors — i love that they deliver a proper San Francisco experience for everybody, there’s no bike snobbery, and you’ll get a warm welcome even if they are up to their eyeballs in repairs and helping people. Travis owns and runs the best shop in the city. I have been coming to him for all of my bike purchases and repairs since 2008. When he purchased FAB in 2012, the shop became mecha for me for all of my bike needs. Travis knows his stuff, as he eats, breathes and lives bikes. He employs a great staff who are very knowledgable and fun. If you race or just ride for fun, FAB should be the first shop you go to.

I came here based on the good reviews and Fresh Air did not disappoint.
The owner, Travis, greeted me as I walked through the door with my second hand bike that was in dire need of a tune-​up, new tire and chain +some, still dusted with playa dust from months prior. If he was judging me, I didn’t notice.
He was honest about what the bike needed, I was honest about how much I had to spend and after some discussion we reached a middle ground. The bike still needs to go back for some more fixing up, but after a new tire, sealing the tire frame, replacing some parts, new brakes and generally cleaning the bike (which I didn’t ask for but am infinitely happy happened) he came in at a few dollars below the quoted cost.
The bike runs great and I no longer look like a quite as much of a negligent wannabe bike owner with half-​year old playa dust stuck in spokes. I am learning…

These guys have done a number of repairs on my bike over the past year or so and their mechanics have always been friendly, accommodating, and trustworthy. In a city filled with bike shops run by snobs and elitists it’s refreshing to find one staffed by so many reliable, friendly, and down to earth people who are still passionate about bikes. They do great work and at honest prices. You can’t go wrong with them.

This place is great. I’m not a professional cyclist, bike messenger or anything like that. I’m a daily bike commuter. I’ve brought my bike into the shop a few times for various repairs and while I don’t have the bicyclist look, have never felt like second class or like a lesser bike rider (hope that makes any sense to you).
Travis has always done right by me. Great service, fast and priced right. He quotes you the cost and that’s what it is. I know I’ll be back.

Brought my almost 30 years old Italian vintage bike for a mayor refresh. Couldn’t be happier with the outcome!!! Walter, who took care of my bike, was the most helpful. He tried to keep as much parts of the old bike as possible and polished and repaired everything. AWESOME job! And they were all super nice. Will go there definitely again and can only highly recommend them.

This bike shop rules! Best service. Travis is the owner, mechanic, and he also races bicycles. This makes him very knowledgeable. They don’t keep much stuff in stock but can get you almost anything with in a few days. They do all the maintenance on my 3 road bikes and my mountain bike. The work is always done on time and done right the 1^st time.

Nice shop, but asked for a quick repair and the new mgmt was «conscientiously opposed» to do less than $ 270 of work on my commuter bike– for «safety reasons.» So I took it to another place near work in Protrero Hill and got it fixed for $ 10. I’ve been riding this bike for eons. It’s safe. These guys just want the $$$.
Bring back the old owner, his dog, and his no-​fuse repair ethic.

Highly recommend this shop. If anything, drop in, take a seat on the bar stool next to the cashier and shoot the –ish. Such a comfortable and friendly vibe here! I brought my single-​speed in for a fixed gear conversion, and the owner literally walked me through each step of the process on the spot, while graciously handling a couple of walk-​in customers and phone calls at the same time.
Don’t waste your time going anywhere else. Not one hint of pretentiousness the moment you step in the door… unlike most bike shops in one area of The City which I will leave unnamed.

I had to get a new tube and a new tire, and I was glad I went here. They were extremely helpful and knowledgeable. The atmosphere is very relaxed; other bike shops I’ve been to, they almost seem sort of elitist in a way. I did not get that vibe at all here.
Prices are pretty good, the location is good, the staff is friendly. If I have a problem or need with my bike, I would definitely go back to them first.

This is my favorite shop in the city. It’s definitely a cool, hip, local, «San Francisco» bike shop. They always give you tons of attention and treat you well. The guys that work there are really tied in to the SF cycling culture and know about everything going on. I feel cooler every time I walk in the door. Ha!
It is under new management since many of these posts, as it was purchased by Travis in August of 2012.

These guys know their stuff. Fast, efficient, great service, and good pricing.
Recommended. If they are not in their shop, its because they are testing out the bike they just worked on. Like test driving a car after the mechanic finishes. Unfortunately there is only 1 or 2 guys there at a time, so thats why you may have to wait, but its not cuz they dont want to help, its because its part of the job!

Another day, another 5 star review for Fresh Air.
I just got myself a bicycle one week ago to the day, and being a cycling noob, I really had no idea what I was getting myself into. The most I’ve ever owned was a beach cruiser or two when I was living in Mission Beach (San Diego), and it required little to no cycling knowledge to cruise down the boardwalk with wrap-​around shades while scanning for skin on the ocean’s edge. Now that I’ve decided to try and work in some bicycle commuting in the city, I need to up my game, and do my best not to get killed in an urban environment.
Technically, I live closer to Mojo on Divis, but that place is a bit intimidating. Tons of bike nerds conforming by being nonconformists with their fixies just doesn’t appeal to me at all. Fresh Air, on the other hand, has no agenda outside of giving any bike enthusiast a great experience.
I strolled in last Saturday with no idea of what I was doing. Do I need a helmet? Lights? Fuck if I know… but the chap behind the counter didn’t make me feel like a total chode for asking rudimentary questions and inquiring about things that a 5 year old could have probably answered quite easily. He was super nice, very informative, and even offered to let me use his pump whenever I wanted for free, because I was a bit strapped to pay $ 50 for my own. All in all, a wonderful first experience for a rookie like myself.
If you head in, make sure to say hello to the shop dog! Such a cool little guy.
