These are the best prices I’ve ever seen for frames, contacts, and eye exams. Dr. Soss is a endearingly earnest guy who takes pride in providing the best value possible. His office isn’t what you’d call upscale; it is an old school neighborhood eye clinic, which shows signs that it has been around since the area was shadier. I was impressed with his selection of frames!

Dr. Soss, or as my husband refers to as «Dr. Awesome Soss» is not your average eye doctor.
It’s been years since my last visit to the optometrist. Recently, I lost one of my contact lenses. I couldn’t bear the thought of walking around blind in one eye so I ended up calling, literally, 8 different places ALL of them telling me that there would be no way to have my one contact lens replaced unless I came in for an eye exam, which there was no availability for until the following week. I was getting so frustrated and found Dr. Soss through Unilocal.I was expecting to hear the same bs, but was told
–no appointment necessary, just come on by
–no eye exam necessary
–almost every prescription and brand of contact lenses were available in the office
I was a little skeptical, but turned out Dr. Soss was professional and stayed true to his words. I was in and out in less than 15 minutes. He doesn’t try to scam you with unnecessary exams costing over hundreds of dollars.
Dr. Awesome Soss has gained my trust and I am so glad I lost my contact lens that day or else I would have never discovered him. I’m looking forward to my next visit and to see his cute doggy!

When in for an eye exam for contacts and glasses and this took 15 min, he went over my history and checked my current glasses. I don’t have insurance eye exam cost $ 50 perfect!!! Everywhere else charges almost $ 100-​$ 200 without insurance and if your a new customer. Dr. Edward is a easy going man. I’m a student so this place saved me money and I finally wanted to get my eyes checked after 3 years!

Dr Soss was professional, informative. My eye exam was very quick, and charge comparing to other places is adequately affordable !!

I came to Dr Soss for an eye exam, he was very thorough and we had a great chat about diet and exercise and how it is important to keep a healthy lifestyle in order to have healthy eyes. We even did a PH test. Dr Soss is a very seasoned professional and offered a wealth of information, he also has a very cute dog. Great for animal lovers! Dr Soss was referred to me by Emmanuel at Lakeside Optical. Only downside about Dr Soss’ location is that parking may be an issue however there are plenty of transportation options including bus and muni.

If I could I would give this review 10 Stars!!. Dr. Soss practice is a blessing for those who need a eye exam and contacts for a fair price to any consumer! I have been to many other optical offices and nothing compares to this office. He is genuine and professional in his practice and will give his 100% to your needs for your eye check up. Dr. Soss truly cares for his clients!!! I am a dog lover and his dog companion in his office is lovable making his office «Pet-Friendly”-should I say more!!.

dr. soss is always willing to help people by giving them great prices on contacts, glasses and other services. so if that’s all you care about, then never mind all the other little things if the price is right. btw i recommend you call first to see if he’s in the store as he often comes in and out with no notice. the doc works and lives spontaneously. ;)

I will say that this was probably the strangest optometrist appt I’ve been to. don’t get me wrong, dr. soss was really nice and gave me a contact lens exam for $ 60.
but it is dead quiet in there and he has a cute brown poodle. I can’t say I’ve ever been to a doctors office where there’s a dog. when I walked in I felt like I had entered an episode of the twilight zone.
you’ll have to see for yourself what I’m talking about! haha…

So not sure why people are complaining. Made a same day appointment– the eye exam was very fast– clearly he has been doing this for some time for he knew how to quickly narrow down the possible lenses for my eyes.
For an eye exam I thought it was cheap $ 45
the questions he asked were all related to my health of my eyes. Someone complained about the Doc asking about coffee consumption — its necessary to know– coffee increases blood pressure — high blood pressure can lead to problems with your eyes.

So I come here on a Saturday thinking I can trust an optometrist that is open in SF during weekend hours. Silly me. Edward kept me waiting twenty minuets beyond my scheduled appointment. Then compounds that with by magically changing his prices on the frames we had discussed on the phone. They were identified by model number so it was a blatant attempt to swindle extra founds. This private practice optometrist was disappointing to the point were it inspired me to take my business straight back to LensCrafters. Edward is not only unprofessional but in my opinion is the definition of malpractice. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE. The corporate blanket has proven to be worth while when it comes to optometry. LensCrafters may be more expensive, but the professionalism you encounter definitely balances out the equation.

Despite the obnoxious people standing behind me and mocking my questions, Dr. Soss took my questions seriously and patiently answered all of them. He has a great practice

I’ve been going to Dr. Soss for many years now on and off when I’m in San Francisco. He’s an amazing optomitrist. Just recently I had him put in prescription lenses for a pair of Versace frames I purchased elsewhere and he did an excellent job. I never have a problem with the service he provides. I’m not big on making appointments which is never an issue for him. All i do is call to see if he’s in the office and drop on by. His prices are affordable with prescription lenses for glasses and contacts. I will always go to Dr. Soss as long as I live in San Francisco!

I came here because I needed to get contacts quickly and my regular optometrist was on vacation. I think you love or don’t love Dr. Soss based on your expectations. He’s just not the right doctor for me.
Pros:
— In and out, super fast exam
— Got contacts on the spot
— No appointment needed
Cons:
— He didn’t a actually examine my eyes. I have insurance, and I’m paying for an exam, so I expect to get checked. He just had me fill out a questionnaire that asked a lot of repetitive questions including some random ones like how much caffeine I drink, he asked if I noticed any problems and then manually put 3 – 4 lenses in front of each of my eyes. That was literally IT for the «exam.» It took 5 minutes, which was a bit disconcerting. When I questioned this, he said the exam procedures at other optometrist offices are just «smoke and mirrors.» But how are you supposed to discover issues with my eyes unless you check???
— He said he would check my insurance eligibility by creating an account in my name online and logging in as me through my insurance website to look at my benefits because he doesn’t like to call the ins companies, which freaked me out and seems a bit sketchy.
— He’s not cheap. He guessed at my eligibility for contacts and said I would get four boxes of contacts, which was average. It’s not, because I got 6 boxes AND a pair of glasses from my optometrist last year (Dr. Chester Lim), but apparently Dr. Soss charges $ 30 a box for my contacts, even though I know I can get them online for $ 25 a box.

My Hero ! Not only the best prices for my contacts but, Dr. Soss can cut the lenses for my funky old frames ! My beloved old eye doc passed way and I never thought I would find another! Dr. Soss will fill those fun flea market thrift shop frames ! yeah !!!

No appointment needed! By the way, there is a big poodle running around this office and it is fine with me because I love dogs ! And the price was cheap for both contact and prescription exam!

A very nice and understanding doctor.
I came to him in a time of emergency needing contacts/​glasses immediately. My prescription had ran out and my contacts were on back order and school started the following Monday. Needless to say I was stressing. Dr. Soss not only had my prescription in contacts but also in glasses. There was no need for an expensive eye exam and he didn’t have to contact my previous doctor. He has prescription glasses for tons of different focuses that he made himself. I bought a hip pair glasses that were in my prescription same day for only $ 65 I’ts nice to see a professional take care in his craft.
Word of caution, he has a large dog, but shes very friendly and hypoallergenic. I would highly recommend this doctor to any friend who had asked me.

The doctor is super nice! I wish every doctors office had a big awesome dog running around. Prices are the cheapest I have seen in SF (probably because he chooses not to waste money on a secretary).

I visited Dr. Soss for the first time yesterday. I was delighted with how attentive he is! His genuine care, intelligence and affordable rates for contacts and glasses was exactly what I was seeking in an optometrist.
A native San Franciscan in practice for over 40 years, finding Dr. Soss was like discovering a rare and unusual treasure. He reminded me of the individual, neighborhood practitioners from my childhood days (having been raised in San Francisco myself) when I was treated almost like a family member rather than another «mark» to up sell something to.
I personally changed optometrists because my former optometrists no longer accept my health insurance and they don’t have appointments for weeks and weeks on end. Dr. Soss was able to see my partner and myself on the same day yesterday and I appreciated that.
Dr. Soss is very flexible with his schedule, does not have a receptionist or fancy answering service and does everything himself. So, if you’re offended or somehow feel the need to criticize individual practitioners for choosing to run their own office the way they see fit, by all means, find another doctor. Dr. Soss sticks to the old-​school basics of treating his clients like the individuals they are — I personally value that.
He’s set-​up on Ocean Avenue near City College so his office is in a neighborhood that has, in my experience, always been blue-​collar working class and therefore has that feel to it. If you’re into aesthetics over practicality, where you’re treated like a number or faceless manikin then please, don’t go to Dr. Soss. Dr. Soss’ strengths are in AFFORDABILITY and SERVICE.
If you’re allergic/don’t like dogs, or fish (he has a tank of goldfish there too), then I advise you to go someplace else. I’m personally a little confused about Wen T.‘s review? If she didn’t like his office, realized he had a dog, then WHY WOULD YOU CONTINUE WITH THE TREATMENT IF YOU’RE ALLERGIC TO DOGS? Why not leave and find another office rather than write disparaging remarks about how you don’t like pets in a practice?
Dr. Soss is definitely a unique and delightful professional. Both my partner and I appreciate him for all his quirks and, after my review, hope you will too.

Dr Soss is a great optometrist. I don’t have insurance and I had to get a new prescription and glasses ASAP. His office is right off the K.
His eye exam was very reasonable, and he’s good for an interesting conversation.
He is OPEN BY APPOINTMENT SUNDAYS! What Doc is open Sundays?
AND he has premade glasses in even prescriptions for under a $ 100 dollars in stock. The plastic frames aren’t designer, but they are great to have as spares, and while you are waiting for your glasses, or if you lost your glasses and need a pair before the next day.
He also has contacts in stock at a reasonable price. You can also bring in you own frames and have the lenses done.
I don’t mind the dog. Dr. Soss was actually on his way out to take the dog hiking, but he waited for me because I could be there in 10 minutes.
