Insanely expensive. $ 11 for ONE slice of French Toast served with cheap apples and oranges. Go to Honey Honey up the road where THREE slices with fresh strawberries cost $ 8.25 and are way better! Staff were stroppy and inattentive. It looks like a cool old school dinner but was rubbish and ridiculously over priced. We only came because the queue at Honey Honey was out the door. Wish we hadn’t bothered. I’ve never left an American breakfast place still feeling hungry before, especially after spending over $ 30 on a small bagel, one slice of French toast and too glasses of cheap juice from concentrate.

We saw the bad reviews as we were sitting waiting for our food so maybe I gave this so many stars because I had low expectations. The coffee isn’t the best but not horrible. I would say this is basically just diner food so I am not sure what people were thinking the food would be like? My husband got eggs and sausage and you can’t screw that up. I got lox and eggs and thought it was pretty good. Someone mentioned toast being cold. Um, listen… Toast gets cold two seconds after you take it out of the toaster and they have to bring it to you. All in all I probably wouldn’t come back but it wasn’t a horrible experience if you stick to the basics. And everywhere in SF seems pricey.

Horrible service tried to get a sandwich to go. Stood there for 10 minutes nobody in front or behind me in line. No one would take my order or even say we’ll be with you shortly. Employees don’t seem to care about customer service.

This place was absolutely horrible. The server couldn’t understand us when we asked for coffee. The eggs were not real, the sausage was not cooked, the toast was cold and it was $ 38 for 2 meals. There were at least two other groups who walked out complaining as well.

I liked the long counter seating. The food was good. I recommend the shakshuka for breakfast. Service was slow for a diner.

Was a suggestion and not as good as stated. Somewhat disappointed because the potato pancakes were much heavier then expected and the mocha cake was a tad dry. Ambiance was nice and the desserts all looked lovely in the window. But I do not think I would go back.

Though David’s excels at providing a wide arrange of kosher items with a charming, old San Franciscan atmosphere, the food is seriously lacking. Their omelets are served as glorified scrambled eggs since there are no other ingredients other than cheese. It quickly becomes dull and a burden to enjoy. If you are adamant on getting a breakfast bite here, I’d recommend instead a coffee paired with one of their captivating pastries displayed by the window.

Don’t go here, EVER!!! I usually Unilocal everything before I go but that morning my friends and I were starving and after striking out getting into other places we opted for this joint as we were walking by. It wasn’t until after we left that I saw it got 1 ½ stars, it deserves far less. It wasn’t very busy for a Sunday morning yet it still took a long time to get our food. When we did get our food it wasn’t even hot! My scrambled eggs were brown and WAYOVERCOOKED, my friends eggs were basically raw, our toast was hardly even toasted and the coffee was terrible. I nearly fell over when we got the bill, $ 58 for 3 horrific meals!!! I can’t even believe this place is in business. The only thing I’m thankful for is I didn’t sick after eating here.

This place needs a major overhaul. The food is expensive, but low quality. I was unimpressed with the breakfast I ordered, and breakfast is a hard meal to mess up! I ordered potato pancakes and my g/f ordered eggs and sausage. Everything was very bland. Most notably, the eggs were possibly not even real eggs, but powdered eggs(this is based on taste and texture). In addition, the toast was cold. Everything seemed to have originated out of a can/jar/freezer, received minimal prep and then ended up on our plates. In the end, this restaurant appeared to place no effort into the preparation of our meal. My guess is that the cooks are poorly trained with limited experience. Walking into the place, there was no host, so we stood in the dining area aimlessly until a busboy told us to sit anywhere we liked. Once we ordered, our food came out quickly.

Awful service, food is horrendous, and prices are high. For what it is, don’t even bother coming to this place if you want to get sick or are really hungry try 398 Brasserie instead. Our server was really slow and the table that got there 10 mins after us ended getting their food way before ours came out. I think that is really unacceptable and how hard is it to make a decent scramble? Apparently, this restaurant does deserve it’s bad ratings. The tastes are not appetizing and not worth $ 15 bucks per dish. So, don’t even bother coming here your expectations of good food will be far-fetched.

First off, folks, it’s a diner and it’s been around for over 50 years. And SF is not a cheap place to run a restaurant, especially when you’re in Union Square and near all the hotels and theaters. So for anyone who wrote a review about the décor being shabby or the prices absurd… I challenge you to find another diner in SF that doesn’t have the same woes(Mel’s food isn’t better and is even more overpriced!). And they have beer here, Stella draft, which I haven’t found in many diners period. And Dr. Brown’s Soda. Food was good. It didn’t knock our socks off, but it was pretty much what I’d expect from a diner. I also think you have to stick to Jewish fare if you come here. My Reuben sando was stacked full of moist pastrami on perfectly crisped rye. And the bread wasn’t soggy by the time it got to me because they gave me a bottle of thousand island dressing to add — bonus points for letting me pick my own sauce level. My boyfriend has the shakshuka which we often make at home. It was peppery, both in sauce and with extra chunks of peppers, which he enjoyed. Service was also quick and efficient. Lots of elderly ladies who come here to read books, so it was a quiet crowd. Ideal when you came in with less than 4 hours of sleep like us. My only complaint was that my side of cole slaw was way too small when my boyfriends extra side of potato salad was huge. We left satisfied overall, though — it’s what I expected. I’d probably come back for the Reuben and Stella when hungover or wanting to avoid the crowded brunch scene.

Worst experience for breakfast in a long time. I should’ve checked the reviews before hand… 1. Burnt coffe 2. Salty omelette 3. Cold toast bread 4. Quite expensive: 44 dlls for 2 people. Avoid if you can.

Horrible. Dirty. Service slow. Server did not know what’s poached egg was! She said she was«new». She and the rest of the staff barely speak English. Asked for plain yogurt, they delivered fake sweet parfait like disgusting looking old spoiled in a dirty bowl. Fruit was I think watermelon and cantaloupe but I can’t be certain. Do not go.

Okay food for what I didn’t order. I ordered one of the specials drawn on the board: Cheddar and mushroom omelette, with my addition of an extra egg. I am a big guy. $ 9.95 without ONE extra egg. Got some kind of swiss cheese egg concoction? I was in a hurry and couldn’t wait for a correction. Got a friend the Matzo Ball soup. He said it was good. My incorrect order was good, ok? Lacking, rather. I was looking forward to some mushrooms and Cheddar cheese. Long story short: Wait staff very pleasant, except cashier. She said, «You no get special!». I pointed to the board… You know what… F it. They, the back line, F-ed up my order. I was cool about it. Tipped 20%. The cashier is a bio**h. $ 28(plus 20%) for a mediocre omelette, that was not what I ordered, and Matzo Ball soup. I feel like it was an eighteen dollar mediocre omelette.

I did not read the reviews before we stopped in. My BF was drawn to the exterior. I gave in to his selection method and we both seemed to regret it after only five minutes in the place. Service was nonexistent. It would have taken less time for us to go in their kitchen and cook it ourselves. It took 20 minutes to order and it was practically empty. I think the wait was to make the place to look crowded or occupied in hopes of attracting others. Once we ordered and the food arrived, we found the appearance to be extremely disappointing and the taste was worse. Gross. I ordered stuff French toast. It was stuffed withed cream cheese and strawberries. It was served with bacon only. A single egg made to order was $ 5.95! Laughable, especially here. —— the strawberries were very dark red which reflected that they were very ripe and too old to slap on bread. I didn’t think you could mess up French toast but they managed to do it without issue. My BF’s poached eggs, hash browns and corned beef hash was borderline. He liked the poached eggs, but gagged when trying to eat the hash browns. They were browned on top but uncooked below. When we checked out and were given a $ 39.97 total we could have passed out. This was not worth $ 12 but should not have been higher than $ 25. Do not make the mistake we did. Save your money or spend it some place else.

I’m not sure why the reviews are so bad for this place. It’s a little overpriced, but my bagel and lox was tasty and my wife’s blueberry pancakes were fine. The coffee was meh though.

It was the cakes in the window that actually drew my attention. Every time I passed by this place I told myself I had to have a cake one day. Well today was that day! Walked inside and its a small entrance, but opens up into a bigger eating area. We were greeted as we walked in, and chose where we wanted to sit. I hadn’t read the reviews before I came here, so I was a little scared after I saw how many bad reviews this place had. However, we ordered anyways. I had the corned beef hash with poached eggs. It wasn’t dry or tasteless like another review had said. It was actually really good. The eggs and hash browns were also good. My friend had the blueberry pancakes with fruit and oatmeal. The oatmeal wasn’t good, but the pancakes were and they had a lot of blueberries in them. Everything is kind of expensive there for the quality of food. Our total was over $ 40, which is expensive for a place like that. I would maybe go there again. I suggest trying this place is you like a wide variety of breakfast, but be prepared for a large bill.

I cant with this place. I wanted to like it because it was right next to my hotel and easy to hop down to. I tried it twice and gave up. First, the prices are insane for some cheap breakfast food. I get that they are in downtown SF and have to pay rent, but really. Second, the service can be slow and unfriendly. The true«diner» experience, I suppose. What really clenched it for me was being served undercooked food on two occasions. The first time, I ordered blueberry pancakes and they came out totally undercooked in the middle, still dripping batter. The second time I ordered french toast which was still soggy and undercooked. Add to that, it had a weird bitter taste. Either the eggs were off or, it tasted like the chemicals from the teflon coating of a non-stick pan had come off on the bread. Super weird. Either way, after paying my $ 20 breakfast bill, I wont be returning.

Like so many other Unilocalers, I should’ve checked. I walked by here one morning and it was crowded so I just thought it must be good, but we were wrong. We thought it was going to be crowded anywhere in Union Square, and since this was on the way, I thought we’d check it out. No one approached us when we walked in which should’ve been the first sign. Then a woman said we could sit anywhere, so we chose the dining room. After a bit, someone approached us. The partner ordered eggs and bacon… and here’s how it went: Waiter: We’re out of bacon, we have sausage He: I don’t like sausage. I’ll have the turkey sandwich on a kaiser roll Waiter: We’re out of kaisers. We only have white, wheat, and rye. We should’ve left at that point, but we both ordered turkey and two iced teas, and I also ordered a side of potato salad. Out came the smallest iced teas… at least they weren’t out of lemons… LOL! I was afraid to ask for a refill or we might’ve gotten charged. The fries that came out with the sandwiches were the best thing. There was only lettuce on the sandwiches, and no mayonnaise. Were we suppose to ask or were they out of that too. Luckily there was mustard on another table. The potato salad was made with egg and I want to say Miracle Whip because it had a sweet taste to it. The whole meal was disappointing, which is why I didn’t take any photos. I gave this review one extra star because I felt the waiter felt bad about being out of things, and he was nice. We should’ve just went to Union Square. After we left and walked down the street, every restaurant we saw, the partner said, «I bet they have bacon.» My last lesson for 2014, «Always check Unilocal first!»
