History

Established in 2015.

While Dance and the City is fairly new, the owners, Hunter and Hilary, have a combined dance experience of over 30 years. Both Hilary and Hunter rose through the ranks of DanceSport as amateurs. Hunter currently competes professionally in the International Latin division. Hilary, while she no longer competes professionally, used to dance in the professional American Rhythm division. Both Hilary and Hunter have trained students for competition and various performance teams.

While their backgrounds are in competitive dance, they both enjoy teaching those who wish to learn for simply social reasons. They have prepared many couples for their wedding dance and have worked with singles a couples just looking to try a new hobby or feel more confident socially. Hilary and Hunter believe that no matter what your reason is for learning to dance, you should always receive the best instruction.

I have been training with Hunter Stephens for almost 7 years now and he has transformed me from a ballerina to a ballroom dancer. He is so precise with his corrections and understanding of technique. I would highly recommend him to anyone wishing to learn the international Latin ballroom dances. Hilary Gandara is also a fabulous teacher and competition coach, together they are an unstoppable team.

I have been taking private lessons with Hunter for over four years now, starting with pointe and progressing to international Latin. Hunter is patient and understanding, but knows when to push me. He tailors his teaching style to my personality and always motivates me to give dancing 110%. He is extremely thorough with my technique and always makes sure I feel ready before competitions. Hunter has helped me find a true passion that I could have never found without him.
Hilary is just as awesome because she is super patient and supportive. Not only does she teach ballroom, but she is a great fitness instructor too!

We contacted Dance and the City Ballroom because our daughter was getting married and my husband and I wanted to feel more comfortable on the dance floor. We were both, especially my husband. a little nervous before our first lesson but our teacher, Hilary, made us feel comfortable as soon as we walked in. You can tell she has been doing this a long time. She guided us around the floor and soon we were dancing to music– not perfectly, mind you-​but we were already doing more than I thought we would during that first class. We opted for private lessons, so we had her undivided attention the whole time. Hilary made a point to ask about our daughter’s music preferences, knowing that they would influence the kind of music played at the wedding and she would play that type of music during the lesson. We’ve only just had a few lessons but my husband and I are having so much fun together, we might keep coming after the wedding is over.
