Description

Specialties

Columbine Design is known for its distinctive and sophisticated use of color and texture. Many of our clients are in the design and advertising industry

along with restaurants such as Café Claude and Gitane and people in the fine arts such as Tom Waits and Paule Anglim. We understand how important it to create designs that reflect their aesthetics and fully represent

the style of their businesses. Because our former brick and mortar shop of 20 years also specialized in the sale of natural history specimens, we can also incorporate seashells, coral and other nature themed gifts into our designs and gift baskets. No longer encumbered by a shop, we can now offer true full service, from visiting homes and businesses to talk about and see first hand what client’s needs are to understanding that sometimes that last minute delivery makes all the difference in the world to a customer.

History

Established in 1985.

Kathleen Dooley

Known for her zany, creative displays in her North Beach shop windows, incorporated now popular elements such as insects and butterflies, coral and seashells, wasp

nests, antique taxidermy, succulents and tillandsias over the 20 year period the shop was open. A lifelong love of flowers has led her to enjoy and design with both traditionally beautiful blooms along with the strange and exotic. Dooley has always grown special plants and flowers which she uses in her designs at her Telegraph Hill home and continues experimenting with new additions to the garden every year. Closing the

Grant Avenue shop in 2005, she continues to design for both private and commercial clients and has expanded to include deck and patio

design services as she now has the freedom to make «home visits» to

analyze what each client’s particular needs are. More info on the history of

Meet the Business Owner

Kathleen D.

Business Owner

Born and raised as a beachgirl in Southern California, Kathleen learned about the art and beauty of flowers from her mother, a skilled gardener.

She received a degree in dance from Mills College and studied and danced both in SF and NYC for many years before returning to her first love — flowers–

in 1983. Working freelance at a number of SF floral design shops, she opened Columbine Design in North Beach in 1985. Since then, her work has

ranged from designing large events such as the Bachelor’s Ball to providing flowers for many well known businesses and restaurants. Some of her clients

have included director Phil Kaufman, Tom Waits, Paule Anglim, David

Ireland, Kirk Hammett of Metallica, and Francis Coppola and she has been featured in many

international magazines through the years.
