Castro Smog Test Only

I’m not sure how $ 70 plus a $ 8 certificate fee is reasonably priced for this process. I suppose this corner allows them to jack up the same process that is $ 25 cheaper over in SoMa.
My experience here was not pleasant overall. I was told conflicting information about what I needed to do to make sure my car would be ready for its retest (told one story after the first test and told a different story right before the retest). I also encountered a problem with incorrect hours being posted on their window of their business. Very little sympathy was extended my way, but I do approve of the change in signage to more accurately reflect their hours of service.
I would very much recommend going to a different smog test station.

I drove here for my first official Smog Test as a new SF resident. Timothy was super friendly and inspected my car in about 15 – 20 minutes. Also, I checked in on Unilocal for a $ 20 coupon. What a great service!

There was only one guy doing what at least two guys do in other Smog shops. But this guy rocked – super fast and respectful.

He does NOT even show up.
The sign says he opens at 9 so i made my appointment online for 9 on saturday. I got there 10 minutes earlier and was waiting and waiting but nothing happened. No calls or anything.
The next door people told me he usually comes in around 9:30.
??? WTF?
But the sign and the website say he open at 9.
While waiting, i already decided to go somewhere else but i really wanted to see his f**king face. So i waited.
Finally He showed up at 9:35, half asleep.
He does not seem to care his business at all.
He just works when he wants to work.
Do not even bother with the online appointment thing.
He upcharges first and give you $ 20 discount which after all is still expensive than other places.
I used to go there every two years, expecting the same awesome service i got in the past. The owner changed, so be alert!!!
I was shocked honestly to see someone who does business like this these days. I want my time back.

I bring both of my cars to this smog test station whenever I need to. Easy to make a reservation on the Web site, and the test is finished in 30 mins or so. Plenty of places to walk or visit while you wait.
You can knock $ 20 off the cost by making a reservation, too.

I had a 9 – 10 o’clock appt. scheduled. I don’t know if that means they could come by and open the shop anytime between then, but I have been sitting out side the shop for 40 mins now! I’d rather pay $ 20 I would have saved here and saved time instead.

Nobody was there! Hours say 9am on Unilocal,8:30 on their door, 9:30 and there is nobody here. Fail.

It’s a tiny shop, but very prompt. In and out in 20min. And don’t forget to schedule an appointment online and get $ 20 off.

The guy was friendly and professional. He actually seems to enjoy helping customers. Took 30 minutes — book online for $ 20 discount — use Unilocal as your last name. It’s a busy, crowded, noisy place but the Castro is across the street!

Don’t go here unless you like getting ripped off.
I don’t know shit about cars but I know smog checks are pretty straight forward so I look on Unilocal and call this guy to make an apt. I don’t bother to ask about pricing because they have good reviews (I skimmed instead of reading through the negs like I should have) and they state their pricing on their website so I’m thinking, «cool, a transparent business».
I get there and the guy is very nice and pleasant. He says something like «your car looks bigger than the other Element I did the other day, it may cost more, I’ll check». Long story short he comes back and says «yes, it’s bigger, it’s considered an SUV». He charges me and when I get home my husband laughs at the (not obvious to me) obvious scam. I then go to the website and sure enough it states «all cars, minivans, SUV’s and light duty trucks.» under the quote. So basically the whole «it’s an SUV I have to charge more is BS even to them. What a jerk! Reporting to BBB next! Nobody likes getting ripped off even for $ 20.

This guy was so sweet and able to do the work right away.

This was the first time I have ever had to get a smog check on a car, and Timothy at Casto Smog Test made it quick and painless. I made an appointment online in the morning (which also saves you $ 20 off the test fee), and brought my car in later that afternoon. Timothy had me in and out within LESS THAN A HALF HOUR! I went on a holiday that didn’t seem to be too busy, so I don’t know if its always that fast, but it was pretty amazing. Timothy also told me since he knew I was waiting he tried to speed it up.
There is a vape shop next door that you could kill the minimal amount of time at, but unfortunately it was closed Mondays.
I would recommend this place to anyone needing a smog check. Even their pre-​coupon price was cheaper than some of the places I looked up. Castro Smog is also Star Certified, if your registration renewal form says you need to go to one of those.
I will definitely be back when I need another smog check.

Super fast, easy and convenient. The owner is a very friendly kid. He was polite and efficient. Not much else to say really but Unilocal is forcing me to write a longer review so I can actually post this. Smog check: PASSED!

They are a solid, courteous smog service.
However, if you don’t have an appointment, don’t rearrange your morning to show up there at 8:30 in the morning. Although their posted opening time is 8:30, they might not show up until 9:05, which is what inconveniently happened to me. Make an appointment the day prior. You can do it online on their website.

Super easy and fast smog test for $ 59 including the certificate. Made my reservation online the morning of the smog check and saved $ 20. It took about 30 minutes which was fine since it is in the heart of the Castro so I just went window shopping.
The guy there was so nice and efficient. He took the car, gave us the $ 20 discount for making an online reservation without us having to ask, and when we were done, walked us through how to submit payment for registration and pointed out we can do it online. Just very helpful and an extra step that made the experience nice.
This is located in the Arco (not sure if ownership changed) gas station at Market & Castro.
