Specialties
For a completely different take on North Beach, head up the street to Calzone’s. This sparkling bistro has a large awning along the front with tables and chairs beneath it, perfect for watching the crowd go by on a lazy afternoon. The thin-crust pizzas are a popular choice, and for good reason: they’re made in an oblong shape, with toppings like marinated eggplant, calamata olives and goat cheese; a grown-up pizza, but with the gooey cheese and crisp bite that brings back childhood memories. Most unique are the homemade Italian pot stickers, an intriguing combination of Asian and Italian flavors, stuffed with sausage, wild mushrooms and ginger and served with a soy-sesame dipping sauce.
Calzone’s is a hot night spot, too; the music is cranked up and passersby stop in at the bar for a cocktail and a chat. The restaurant serves food until 1am, which makes it an ideal place to end the night with an espresso or a midnight snack!
