Bruce Marcucci, DDS

I’ve been seeing Dr. Marcucci for about 20 years. The staff are all-​stars. Second to none. Dr. Marcucci is absolutely professional and on top of his game. He refers me to others (e.g. periodontist) when needed. I wouldn’t go anywhere else for general dentistry and I am the hyper-​critical, OCD type. Most of the complainers seem to have issues with insurance coverage rather than this dental practice. I have Delta Dental (world’s worst!) yet Union Square Dentistry has always been an effective interface to minimize my out of pocket costs. And I love the well-​designed and hyper-​clean office.

While I have few dental needs I do go for annual check ups and find the dentist, Dr. Marcucci to be a bit aloof but the rest of the staff warm and interested. He is untested in terms of work for me but I would prefer a bit more engagement by him.

It makes me really sad to write this review. I was looking for a new dentist after an unfortunate incident left me with a chipped front tooth. I called all around within my network and still couldn’t find a «preferred provider» to go to.
After 3 successful calls I narrowed it down to Dr. Marcucci. His receptionist Kristal was very helpful and told me that they needed to clear things with my insurance before she could say for sure that I would be covered. Kristal then assured me that my insurance went through and I made my way to the office that morning.
My first experience was so positive that I came back for a cleaning and then a third time for a full examination where I found out I had 2 cavities (yikes). Up until this point I walked away owing nothing and being told that I was covered.
Sadly after my final exam, I went to close out with Kristal and was handed a bill … I was not 100% covered by my insurance and had to pay $ 75 for my first two appointments. Disappointed, I decided to hold off on coming back to see Dr. Marcucci to get my cavities fixed and placed a call to Delta Dental.
On my call with Delta Dental I was told that they never spoke with Kristal over the phone and that they never communicated I would be covered by Marcucci’s office.
After paying $ 75 for my first 2 visits I’m now left with a bill of over $ 100 for the last exam which was basically worthless because now I have to see another dentist for a full examination to get my cavities filled.
I reread a few reviews on Unilocal and noticed the negative ones complaining about the billing processes. I wrote a letter to Dr. Marcucci asking him to meet me in the middle, but I never got a response. Kristal just left a voice message saying that whats done is done.
At this point, my positive memories of Dr. Marcucci and his staff have been blurred by poor communication and an unsettled bill. It’s not so much the $$ that matters here, but more the fact that the right communication didn’t happen by his staff with my insurance AND the fact that I went in 3 times before they realized I wasn’t fully covered.
Now I’m left writing a check and a Unilocal review to make sure other people don’t get blindfolded like I did.

Dr. Marcucci is a top quality dentist. I fell at ease with his professional demeanor, great results and honest approach. Ruth, his assistant, is a dream.
The office is professionally run by Kristla and she covers all insurance paperwork; wonderful. She also helps patients in any way to not forget their appointments. And, she helps if any change is needed. Just give her an advance warning!

Dr. Marcucci, Ruth and Kristal are key to my dental happiness. Kristal is on top of all the insurance nuances, Ruth is on the ready with instruments, air and water (and nitrous, when necessary), and Dr. Marcucci is the best dentist I’ve ever had the good fortune of being under the care of. He truly cares about my dental health, alleviates my concerns and fears, and is a perfectionist, which I truly appreciate. I recommend the Union Square Dentistry wholeheartedly!

It’s really important to trust your dentist, especially when they get that drill going — I’ve been going to Bruce Marcucci since before I can remember. I can’t imagine trusting a dentist more than I trust Bruce. He has excellent, conservative dental technique, but he also has an artist’s eye for matching tooth color and shape. I finally decided to get veneers on my front teeth, and I’m so happy! He did such a great job! Thanks, Bruce!

I’m disgusted with Marcucci. I called them early on Friday to reschedule an apt that I had on Monday b/​c my 2 year old son was sick (their cancellation policy is 48 hours in advance) — I called with 72 hours. Crystal (the receptionist) called me on Monday to say they are charging me $ 50 for breaking the appointment. I told her that was completely unreasonable considering I followed their policy. She said she’d talk to Marcucci. She called back yesterday and said that they won’t charge me but I should find another dentist. I have been going to them for 8 years and sent them SEVERAL referrals. This is disgraceful and shameless. If i read this review as an outsider, i would stop going to him out of principal.

Dr Marcucci focuses on excellence and is well known and respected in the field of dentistry for his skill and dental artistry. His goal is to make good decisions and to perform great dental work.
With his work, you get really amazing and long lasting solutions for any restorations or other dental work and repairs.
Dr Marcucci has been my dentist for more than 30 years and has been unfailingly superb at what he does. He has trained a great staff, led by Crystal and has wonderful skilled dental assistants like Ruth. His dental hygenists, Cori and Michelle are truly excellent and caring and personable and they take the time to give you actionable advice on how to prevent dental issues in your future. When you have known Dr. Marcucci as long as I have, you come to realize he also has a great sense of humor, but his main focus is on doing the right thing for your teeth and dental health. What could be better than that?

I have been a patient of Dr. Marcucci’s for about 30 years, having been recommended by coworkers as the «best dentist in town.» And he certainly is. Not only is he a perfectionist (would you want anything else for your teeth?) the whole office is the most efficient, professional operation imaginable. Its clear that Dr. Marcucci cares both for his patients, and his assistants, and the whole operation runs like a well-​oiled clock.

The greatest thing about Dr. Marcucci’s office is his excellent staff, especially his hygenists, Michelle and Cori. Both of them know precisely what they are doing, and take an active interest in the dental health of their patients. When it was time for me to have some gum surgery, it was Cori who pointed it out, over several appointments (Dr. Marcucci concurred). Michelle and Cori are very personable too. This is an office that genuinely cares about its patients.

Watch out for a no-​show penalty bill for being sick and providing good notification.

I’m dating my dentist’s office.
It’s been six months, and I’m nervous to see them again. How well will we remember each other? Will we pick up right where we left off, or will we have to ease back into it? My hands are sweaty, so I shove them into my pockets as I walk through the front door. «Hi Nils!» she says, throwing me a huge smile. My shoulders drop as I let out a sigh and return her smile, those two simple words lifting my entire countenance.
We chit chat for a while, exchanging notes on a few restaurants and bars. I could talk with her for hours, but minutes later I’m shepherded to a separate room where I lay down on my back in a comfortable chair. Here I was thinking that SHE was going to take it slow — didn’t see this coming, but I’m thrilled with how quickly we’re going to get down to business. She looks different from my last visit (she was Asian, now she’s Caucasian and smells like honey and lavender). She dons protection (she’s a safety girl), and then starts out slow.
She works my mouth gently, my lips barely parted as she begins to explore. As always, she’s talkative, and constantly attentive to how I’m feeling. I love that about her.
Things start to heat up. After she has re-​familiarized herself with my lips, she moves on to my gums, my teeth, and my tongue. I’m salivating profusely. Suddenly, we’re right back to where we were six months ago — time has created no distance between us. She and I carry on with our pillow talk, but I let her do most of the talking while my mouth is otherwise occupied. She teases, pushing me away, and then in a somewhat stern voice, reminds me that I need to floss more often and should brush for a minimum of two minutes. How embarrassing — so much for the breath mint I downed beforehand — she saw right through that. Sheepishly, I tell her that I’ll work on it.
She calls for Bruce.
Bruce? Really? Not how I imagine a threesome. Bruce enters, slaps on gloves, and suddenly I taste latex. Eww. He pokes and prods for a few seconds, then tells me I have really healthy teeth and gums. Really, Bruce? Flattery will get you nowhere. (Well, I do like hearing that, actually, especially coming from him.) Bruce is done in mere moments — typical for a guy. Sheesh.
I know the visit is over when I’m offered a parting gift. Not a kiss, not a hug, not even a handshake. Just a spare toothbrush and some floss. Ouch. She had to rub it in, didn’t she? I bid her adieu and then schedule our next date for six months from now. She insists I write the date on a postcard, which she’ll send me weeks before our next get together.
I’ll forget about them until then, but when that card arrives, they’ll be all I can think about. I love long-​distance dating — no strings attached, but sometimes six months seems like forever.

Ok, he may not be the friendliest guy in the world, but he’s a great dentist. I was terrified of going to the dentist for years, but when I moved to SF, I found Dr. Marcucci. The office is comfortable and all of the staff are really nice and professional. The last dentist I went to was extremely unprofessional (wore shorts and sandals to do my filling and gave me too much nitrous oxide… terrifying) which makes me uneasy. The hygienists really take time to talk to you during the cleaning appts. about brushing habits, etc. and what you can do to improve your teeth. Dr. Marcucci did a couple of fillings and a partial crown for me, and I’m sure he did a fantastic job. Like I said, he’s not particularly personable, but I think the quality of his work makes up for it.

My fiancé directed me to Dr. Marcucci 3 years ago. I went for the free movie tickets on my birthday and stayed for the dental excellence.
Dr. Marcucci and everyone in his office have gone out of their way for me. Traveling a lot, I constantly have to reschedule appointments. They really do their best to work with me. Recently I needed some bleaching for my wedding, Dr. Marcucci actually came in well before 8am so that I could make the appointment to pick up and sign my marriage lisence.
What’s more I trust in what Dr. Marcucci tells me. He’s done an excellent job instructing me on my particular dental issues… if I don’t start flossing better soon, I’ll be in serious trouble… he’s even brought me in repeatedly to track the internal bleaching in my root canel. My last denstist slapped some bleach in there and then took it out in two weeks without even really looking at the effects. Dr Marcucci has also done tons of work on my fiancé. We’ve referred 3 sets of friends and would refer anyone else looking for an excellent dentist.
Finally, I’d like to take this opportunity to appologize to everyone at Dr. Marcucci’s office. I try to brush and floss and use mouth wash before I come in, but I just can’t stop drinking coffee. Pots and pots of coffee.
So I’d just like to appologize for my breath. You guys do such a great job paying absolute attention to detail while I billow up huge clouds of heavy caffinated dragon breath from my stomach. You never even let on or act disgusted either. That tollerence is so touching.

I must say I do love the location near my work, the atmosphere (it’s decorated like a spa!), and I love the staff –the girls there are the sweetest, most nicest people ever! And they have great Christmas parties with beer and wine and dim-​sum and palm readers and chair massages. So I desperately wanted to stay with the happy faces and the perks…
However, Dr. Marcucci was not personable or even nice to me at all. He never said a word to me and barely even looked at me the whole time I was a patient there. I thought he might warm up to me after a year or so but he never did. The last and final straw, Dr. Marcucci was training a new assistant and when she didn’t do something to his specifications, he yelled at her while I’m sitting there with my mouth open and then grabs the tool from her while it was in my mouth. I felt like a car! He didn’t apologize or say anything to me or the assistant. He just carried on yanking away at the tools, all while ignoring little ol’ me behind the mouth. That’s when I realized he didn’t care about me; he just wanted my teeth.
Spare yourself the grief and go to one of the Barry brothers on Sutter instead.

This dentist is truly amazing! I’ve never been in any medical facility that offers such a high level of quality service and is always on time. I’ve even been able to call up for friends in need of emergency work and get them in right away. The office was also not afraid to refer one of my friends to another dentist since nothing was available soon enough. That’s the sign of someone who truly cares about the patient’s health and not the bottom dollar.
To all the idiots who gave only 1 star stop letting insurance companies lead your lives…

Like one of the reviewers, I too would give Dr. Marcucci «0» stars if i could. Initially he seemed like a good dentist – knowledgeable, informative, etc. But his work spoke for itself and my experience was so bad I’m taking the time now to speak out.
Also like the other reviewer, the issue I initially had was around their disclosure on costs. When I finally forced the cost out of Krystal (office manager) she told me my insurance would cover 100% of it – this was after they apparently reviewed my plan. In the end I was charged $ 1200 ABOVE what insurance would cover.
After complaining and documenting everything (highly recommend) they gave me a discount on the nitrous and the photos – which i never requested. But I still had to pay the bulk of the bill.
I begrudgingly paid and vowed never to go there and tell everyone i could to avoid Dr. Marcucci’s office.
Regarding their service, sub par. The help was polite and the surroundings were pleasant although the quality of the work was lacking. The crown he put in was too high and continued to give me pain many months afterwards. Turns out the crown wasn’t molded exactly as my original tooth should have been so it sat high, thus causing undo pressure on the tooth when eating. I went back a couple times for «free adjusting» of which gave me no relief. It’s been two years now and I’ve since had it fixed by another dentist where I showed him the mold and he hand sculpted the crown to the way it should have been. If you’re shopping for a dentist I highly recommend Dr. George Karsant over on Ocean Blvd.
So, dentist shopper beware. Check out Unilocal for only those with multiple «genuine» positive reviews. If there are multiple negative reviews like this one, avoid them like the plague. There are too many good dentists out their to waste your time, money and toothache on. The 30 minutes of reviewing the best ratings will definitely pay off. Good luck!

A pleasant dentist’s office?! Is that possible?! Yes, it is. The staff is super friendly and you never have to do the death grip on the arms of the chair.

It’s been a few years since I visited Dr. Marcucci, but the last time I was there I stormed out in a huff and never returned. The reason for my irritation was that Dr. Marcucci did not seem to care at all that I was not comfortable during the proceedings. I KNOW that cavity fills are not pleasant. Trust me, I’ve had over 50 fillings, 2 root canals, and 1 crown! I’ve been in this business for years, but I’ve never come across such blatant disregard for a patient’s discomfort. He sort of just ignored me when I tried to indicate that I was in pain.
Oh, and here’s the clincher. The filling Dr. Marcucci did in my back molar fell out. and now it not only needs to be re-​filled, but it also needs a root-​canal or partial crown. Thanks, Dr. M! I won’t be returning to you for this remedial work.

The best dentist I have ever been to in my life, and hopefully the last. Dr. Marcucci has amazing craftsmanship. The office is warm and hip with a great selection of jazz and assorted music to relax you. He’s a pro and I HIGHLY recommend anyone who needs work done or dental advice to go here! Check your insurance with the front desk. I had to get reimbursed by my carrier.
I have had two procedures by him and felt nothing. Park in the lot next door.
