I called the office, gave the receptionist my name and purpose of the call and she acknowledged my name and transferred me to Vassil. I really appreciated the professional advice he gave me over the phone and even though I did not use his services, this company deserves a 5-​Star rating for being so helpful and honest!

Wade and Vassil have always answered my questions quickly and thoughtfully, and saved me many thousands of dollars. I have had a more or less complicated tax situation for many years, as I work as a independent consultant, and started three different businesses in addition to working as a salaried employee. They’ve saved me again and again. The only surprises I have at tax time are good ones.
More importantly, though, Barlow & Hughan have a hilariously dry and witty writing style. I hate doing my taxes, but when the big green and white envelope with the tax organizer from Barlow & Hughan arrives in January, I tear it open and read gems like:
«It appears taxpayers and tax preparers have to get used to the fact that every two years Congress does not want to pass tax legislation before they have to face the voters in November; so everything happens in the lame duck session in December. Following this new ‘tradition’ Congress passed and sent to President Obama in mid-​December 2014 doezens of ‘extenders’ which restored numerous tax provisions that had expired on December 31, 2013. Many of these tax provisions had been designed to encourage investment and create jobs, which they may well have done in the two weeks after they were passed. But most [or] all of them expired on December 31, 2014.»
Then I fill out my organizer and track down receipts with a smile on my face. They really ought to have a Tumblr or something. Until then, you’ll have to become a client if you want to read the whole thing.
Updated to add: a friend went to Barlow & Hughan and described it this way:
«They pegged me as a ‘computer security’ person as soon as I walked in, which was funny because I deliberately dressed in my best normal-​drag and then spent half an hour telling me that I didn’t need to do any of the things I was worried about before refusing to bill me. Magical.»

i had some basic questions about setting up a sole proprietorship in San Francisco, CA, so I called these guys based on their good reviews. i figured i’d have to trek down there and spend $ 50-​$ 100, but it was worth it to get things started off right.
MUCH TO MY SURPRISE, my call was transfereed to Vassil (a CPA), who gave me free advice over the phone. in addition to the resources he pointed me to, he also answered several of my personal follow-​up questions with apparent pleasure — throwing in at the end, «the tax stuff is easy — it’s the business that will be hard!» we shared a laugh.
the way i see it, Vassil saved me a trip downtown and at least $ 50. if i do end up needing further tax services, they’ve already won my business.

Vassil Gotzev at Barlow & Hughan has been doing my taxes for the last few years and I’ve been extremely happy with his work.
