I have lived in this neighborhood since I was 5. Seen three other stores here to me it ain’t nothing special it got the Fire House pizza ohh.
The items are higher priced than whole foods with less selection.
Make your own choice

This market is very pricey for everyday essentials such as dish detergent or paper towels. However their wine selection is well curated and reasonably priced. The clerks are always very friendly and many of them are knowledgeable about the wine.
When it comes to produce I always skip this market in favor of the various Russian, Greek, Armenian and Mexican produce markets nearby. 6001 California — or as I like to call it — Appel & Dietrich — invariably falls short in the fresh fruit and vegetables department. Their produce is always overpriced and usually has seen better days.
Once when Angelina’s café across the street was closed, I availed myself of their deli department and enjoyed the sandwich that the clerk prepared. Although was no masterpiece, it was satisfying in a pinch.
Overall I would recommend the 6001 California market as a great neighborhood spot to find gourmet items including wine chocolates and craft beers… at a reasonable price considering the location.

I love a small store with not too much stuff. Their meat & poultry-​Marin Sun is excellent. Dairy with organic & local is always appreciated. I can always get what I need & the service is always superb. I hope they stick around forever. Plus, it is a great corner with Angelina’s & Cal’s Pet store.

I love my local market. Guys that work here are all awesome. They have a great selection and great prices. We are talking Marin Sun Farms beef, Rocky Chickens, Strauss butter (can we please carry Strauss milk too?!) — great produce, etc. I love my local market.

I was having trouble finding large shell noodles to make stuffed shells tonight. I called California Market and asked the lady on the phone if they had large pasta shells that I could make stuffed shells with. She replied with yes, we have giant shells that you can make your own with, but we don’ t have pre-​stuffed shells, only the big shells. I said perfect, and walked all the way to the store to buy them. I get there and can’t find them on the shelf, so I ask a worker, and he looks, and says that they don’t carry them. I think they should actually check the shelf before they tell a customer that they have something. Won’t be going here again.

Extremely expensive but a great organic selection.
If you just need regular groceries, just go to any other convenient store in the neighborhood (I recommend the produce market on 25^th & clement).
They do have a good cheese selection & vegetarian options. If you need to stock up on picnic goodies, this is a good store.

This place is great.
It’s always nice to walk into a small neighborhood business and be greeted by genuine and friendly staff. Service is not lacking here! I went recently just to grab a few things and I had to wonder why I don’t stop by more. That’s something I am going to change.
A huge factor for me is that most small grocers will have the basic canned goods and whatnot (cereals, snacks, etc), but you can tell when it’s been there for years, or you can tell that their stock isn’t updated very often.
That is NOT the case here.
There is a great higher to majority of their items and you can tell that great thought goes into the produce, the deli and the overall products in this market. They have a wide range, including a varied selection of organic goods.
Lovely service, great location. While certain items may be a little pricey, it’s a sacrifice I am willing to make to have a better quality store in the neighborhood.

Living in this neighborhood over 40 years, I like to support local independent businesses. However, this market has lost my patronage and I explain why to my neighbors. My experience is up to the Spring of 2010.
Some employees that worked the floor were friendly, smiling and offering to help. The man in the meat section was knowledgeable, explaining the characteristics of the meats and made very good sandwiches.
Other employees, which I saw at the registers, were chatty and friendly with customers they recognized. I’m not chatty but, I return the same level of friendliness shown to me. They were only friendly to me if I made the effort. That is not a good example of customer service.
The variety of items was interesting but unbalanced, lacking enough common items and offering too many upscale goods. The produce was often neglected and aging. I’ve tolerated buying wrinkled bell peppers because I don’t want to make a separate trip. If the store is not committed to featuring quality produce, they should not offer it and I’ll plan to get them at one of many nearby grocers.
Sometime early last year, this store stopped selling milk in glass bottles. I kept forgetting to bring the bottle back until several months later. The young woman at the register obviously didn’t know how much was the deposit and asked me how much it was. I told her it was $ 1.50 and assumed it was included in my change. As I was walking out, she called me back to tell me I forget to get my deposit. I thought, «No, you forgot to give it to me.» She then handed me a dime.
I was too stunned to say anything and she returned to helping customers. The realization that she didn’t believe me and didn’t make any effort to find out from other staff or management offended me. This was the last straw and I never returned.
I’m willing to give this market another chance if I can find motivation. Perhaps, if I see enough positive new reviews or a response from the owner, I would return and update my rating.

I know the place for last 25 years.
I remember that old owner who wears a blue cotton long jacket, and there was a butcher, white guy in the meat section who looked like a drunk or just got out of prison or something, but he was really nice to me. I used to get a sandwich from the guy.
It was a good and old regular grocery store with meat section.
And later, some one took over and became a organic produce market.
At the time, all organic vegetables they had were looked all dead but very expensive like sonofsbitch!
So, I stopped going here. That was about 10 years ago.
There was a time, up and down.
I stopped by here the other day to get beer because my son who lives near by asked me for dinner at his house.
So, I looked around, see produce section, I saw all veges looked fresh and happy. There are 3 alley for can foods and groceries, and refrigerators, all neat and clean.
Meat and Deli section were lookin’ nice too.
I like the market.
I’ll come here more often.
This is a good neighborhood market that I’d love to support.
I try not to go Safeway and TJ as much as I can.
We have to support local business.

This store is just two blocks away from my apartment and I just love walking to the market when ever I’m missing a few items. they have a great selection of items and they are a bit much but if you think about the gas you spend on driving it really comes out to the same thing.
This place is really interesting it has both organic items and gourmet.

People need to walk more. I don’t know how many times I’ve took the trek down Geary, and had to make an awkward u-​turn and wait in line to get into the parking lot at Trader Joe’s. I love Trader Joe’s. But I hate driving.
So today when I was out to pick up some milk, I decided to stroll over to the market on 25^th and Clement. I like their stuff, but the market’s kinda small, and sometimes they’re out of things, like my 1% milk. Preferably organic.
So I decides to walk a couple blocks further down to 6001 California. I’d walked by it before, but never had a good reason to stop in. And I’m glad I did. They’ve got a wide selection of things, from organic yogurt and bottles of Ito En green tea, to the stuff I picked up today, a gallon of 1% organic milk and steel cut oatmeal. Yes, I’m trying to be healthier these days.
Sure, I could have saved a buck and a half going to Trader Joe’s. But it makes more sense to take a two-​minute walk here for a couple of quick essentials. I love my hood.

One afternoon I was making eggs after an run and the last egg I had in the carton crushed in my hand! This market is very convenient and saved my brunch… more than once, actually.
It’s great for milk, eggs, and a veggie or two. Lots of organic selection if you’re into that kinda thing. The service is always super friendly, and I’ve never had to wait for long to check out. I wouldn’t get my groceries here obviously but I’m glad to have this store half a block away from the house for times when I need the little things.
And yes, kombucha. It stares at you when you’re checking out, screaming «BUY ME NOW, I WILL MAKE YOU SKINNY!» Don’t fall for it.

First of all, this place has a killer old neon sign hanging out front that says «Appel & Dietrich Fine Food Market». I vote that 6001 California Market change its name and resurrect that sick sign! This place is very reliable. They have just about everything one can need in a small market. Great selection of organic and non-​organic food and drink, staff is super friendly and the owner is a nice guy too!
They also throw an awesome underground Haunted House in the basement on Halloween… now what market do you know that does that?!

Well, Darryl sent me an email after I evaluated his store asking if there were things I wanted them to stock. I thought it was a nice gesture. I replied about the only thing I’d like would be Straus milk and I wished him an happy new year.
He replied: «your an idiot. Happy New Year!!»
I love how people can be childish and derogatory while failing to use proper grammar.
I guess I’ll stop all transactions at this store and mention this businessman’s childish antics every time the topic comes up.

I was initially lukewarm on 6001 California due to the size of the store and semi-​high prices, but over time have really come to appreciate it. While only half the size, it manages to stock most of the things that the IGA does, but in a much friendlier environment with only a minor increase in cost.
The hidden gem here is the meat selection, which has a huge selection of naturally raised beef that is very reasonably priced. I discovered this by a fluke when I wanted to make hamburgers and didn’t have a lot of time, but after trying it I can never go back to the crap you get at Safeway.
I mainly shop here on weekends, but it rarely gets crowded and I’ve never been in line over a minute. No 5 stars because I don’t really get their produce selection, which is really weak. Fortunately there are 3 good alternatives only a couple blocks away — El Grande or 25 & Clement.

I haunt 6001 California. I live across the street; my whole family knows their hours, what they stock and don’t stock, and the names of the couple who run the place now (Darrell and Shelley).
This is not your average corner store. From the time the wonderful former owners (Greg and Sophia) bought it from that creepy little Peter Lorre-​type guy who used to own it, the place has been the gem of the neighborhood.
6001 California shares the crown of Outer Richmond service excellence with Angelina’s across the street — which is, for the uninitiated, where Seacliff people come to slum it up with those of us from the other side of the tracks.
What you can find at Darrell and Shelley’s: solid organic produce and meats, great breads, a good selection of ice cream, yummy handmade chocolates and baked goods, a large selection of wines, good local dairy and cheese. What else: a well-​trained staff who know the neighborhood. Also, Darrell and Shelley’s son — a whip-​smart kid in grade school — is sometimes there. He knows that store like the back of his hand.
What else you’ll find here: the neighborhood. It’s a nice one. Here’s where I saw a young couple set their baby son on the scale next to the cash register to check his weight. AWESOME.
Fun people shop here, and work here. If you stop by you’ll see.

BAGEL DOGS!
Homemade yum yums brought to the store… nice. I like these better than the ones at Mill Valley Market. Though, Mill Valley Market always has a ton on hand where 6001 may or may not… best to call. :) They are only 2.80 as well… nice! Also much better than bagel shop bagel dogs (pricey and not as good IMO).

Small, but good selection of specialty chocolates. Seems a little R&D could be used to make the selection a bit better though.

Why do you even have a phone if you’re never going to answer it, 6001 California Market?
You do not carry lemon grass (which is fine), but you could have answered the phone (when I called you 2 times) to tell me that and saved my bf the trip.

Awesome market and lovely addition to the ‘hood. Ended up going to 6001 California Market to do some much needed shopping, and doing so on a much needed holiday from work. Parking is somewhat easy in the surrounding area. A trip to Safeway or TJ’s will get you parking in a lot, but where else will you find a nice community market with tons of personality, without the headaches of a line and fellow shoppers.
Was only looking to get the essentials, a la milk and bread, but ended up wandering the small isles a lot longer and picked up some great items. Lots of local products, from granola to beef to honey. And yet you can still find a can of tuna and some generic O.J. for reasonable prices.
You can come in for a morning bagel or pastry and some coffee. Market is located right in front of a Muni 1 bus stop. Very convenient for some!
The owner, greeted everyone who entered and even knew most people by name. A true sign of a great establishment!
