History

Established in 1977.

Originally opened in 1977, University Towne Centre was acquired by the Westfield Group in 1998 and renamed Westfield UTC in 2005. In 2008, a multi-​million dollar transformation began and the first phase was completed in November 2012. Leave the real world behind with resort-​inspired amenities, over 150 new stores, a 14-​screen ArcLight Cinema Complex, a Family Lounge, a puppy park, beautiful new landscaping, and more! Expect further additions of over a dozen stores by the end of 2013.

I like this mall. It’s open-​air so even though it’s under construction, it’s really beautiful. Nicely maintained– fits in perfectly in the La Jolla area.
The downsides are what everyone has been saying– the construction, and the parking. During peak hours it’s an absolute cluster, there’s nothing in the world that would make me go there when it’s crowded.
I really like the selection of stores, and that it has a number of good restaurants as well. It’s not just typical mall food, they also have options like Tender Greens, Noodle & Company, and Corner Bakery.

I like this mall quite a bit, and it has a great selection of stores that I shop at, however over the past 4 years that I’ve lived in the area, it seems like it is ALWAYS under construction. Parking is also always an adventure, and you almost always have to parking lot stalk someone for a spot, even half a mile away from the mall. Overall it’s a really lovely mall with tons of mid to high end shops and the standard department store anchors (Nordstrom, Macys, Bloomingdales), and an Archlight moving theatre. The 24 Hour Fitness here is actually very nice as well.
The food court had a ton of international options and overlooks an indoor ice rink — fun to watch while you’re having a bite to eat.
I really wish they’d put in a garage for parking!

Fun and lively. Great atmosphere. A lot of different options if you like to eat or shop. The food court has a good variety of flavors and you can find pretty much anything you’d ever want to buy in one of the numerous shops.

While not my favorite when it comes to hardcore shopping, this is more of a place to stroll and spend an afternoon window shopping.
No clothing stores I really like, but they do have great dining and décor and furniture options here.
Very clean, classy and modern feel, we had a nice afternoon here even though I didn’t buy a thing.
Tons of easy parking, not too busy, makes for a nice day out.

I love UTC mall! It’s undergoing construction but it’s all worth it. What more could you ask for? It has a great food court, many shops, a movie theater, etc. I always feel happy coming here. Parking is a bit hectic due to the construction, but it’s not impossible. Utc is definitely my go-​to mall since it’s the closest to where I live.

The only thing I really like about this mall is the fact that you can come here and relax and lounge on their comfortable chairs all around the mall, it’s not the biggest mall but for sure the most relaxing on a not so busy day.

Hands down my favorite mall. I’ve been to quite a few malls in OC, LA, SD, SF, Seattle and this is by far my favorite mall. The atmosphere, the décor and the selection all make it amazing. Theres places for you to relax and wind down under the SD sun. If you want to grab food they’ve got a great selection of healthy choices as well as the typical fast food choices for you. Since 2013 they’ve been remodeling a lot of their spaces so the look of the place is really modern and they’re currently expanding too.

A little pretentious but overall this is a great outdoor mall. The food court is one of the best I’ve seen. Eureka! is a fantastic burger & beer option if you can’t stand the under-​300 calorie rather bland options at Seasons 52. There’s even a Tesla dealership!
Stay away from the watch repair kiosk. I replaced two batteries in my Michael Kors watches and they charged me $ 50!
Outside of that place and Season 52, my only main gripe is that they aren’t closer to me in Carlsbad ;)

Conveniently located near UCSD and the surrounding La Jolla offices.
It’s recently renovated and currently under construction for a new phase development expected to finish in 2017 therefore parking is terrible at the moment.
It’s a smaller mall with only a select number of stores.
Ladies: if you like affordable places do not shop here as they only have Forever 21 and Fashion Q. Go to Plaza Bonita, Horton’s, Mission or Fashion Valley if you’re shopping for clothes.
This mall is mainly for destination shoppers, if you have a specific thing to buy and you know which store to go to. Not a good place if you’re shopping for an outfit for an event as the only major clothing stores are Macys, Nordstroms and JcPenney. Not many choices.
Pro: They have a pretty good food court and there is also an ice skating/​ice hockey rink inside the food court.
Tip:During construction park near Certified Tire or Sears Auto because no one really parks in those areas.

Came here for the Hello Kitty truck visit. No I’m serious… I fought the weekend Christmas shoppers just to line up to get a mug for my coworker. It was certainly a fight just to get a parking spot here… if there was an overflow lot, I didn’t see it as I was doing the stalking treatment on a few people when they were walking towards their vehicle.
After getting the Hello Kitty mug, I took a quick stroll through this mall and it was a nice mix of stores for women, men, and kids with wide diverse appeal. I even saw a See’s Candy which seems a bit of place in such what seems like a upscale type mall.
Their food court was spread out in a U shape with a full view of the lower level ice rink where people of all ages were ice skating. It’s pretty rare to find a fully maintained ice rink open year round. Props to Westfield for having this as a contrast to the sunny SoCal outdoor activities.

UTC is my favorite mall in SD!~
Back in the day it was Fashion Valley that I loved, but with a mall with an ice-​skating rink in the food court area where else can you find that in SD? Great for people watching and grabbing a bite ;]
It’s neat and also the upgrades brought this place up a notch! I liked this place before the construction. but it definitely added a better atmosphere. From so many nice details and changes all around. lots of places to lounge and take a break from shopping. UTC offers beautiful outdoor seating areas everywhere.
Parking is a little bit limited right now with major construction on the one side I used to always park at.
This place is the perfect mall to chill at. as well as for food, drinks, ice-​skating, movies, and shopping of course!
My favorites here: Red Robin, Seasons 52, Eureka, Lemonade, Royal India Express, Victoria’s Secret, Sephora, Forever21, and good ‘ol Macy’s.

After the remodel, a few new stores have popped up and they seem more on par with how the exterior looks. However, some of the older stores that have been there still look a little run down from the inside. It is a lot nicer to walk around until you get into the store. Parking is still horrible here.
The makeover just needs to be pushed into some of the stores, then it’ll get a bump up. Parking is also horrible here.

This mall has undergone some serious remodeling. It used to be just a simple mall but now it is more clean and kids friendly. I work right across the street so I have seen this place through construction and they are doing more construction. I hope they take into consideration of creating more parking spaces since parking can be a nightmare at UTC.
This mall has pretty much everything beside high-​end store such as LV, Chanel, Prada, Burberry… you have to go to fashion valley for that.

By far my favorite mall in San Diego. :D
I come here very often for inspiration! There’s so much to look at and eat, lol. UTC is huge and widespread so you’re always feeling free to walk about, not «trying to follow the herd» effect. AND you always have the option to shop with your furry baby (or babies). Most businesses have water bowls outside so your baby can cool off. After so much people watching and leading the way to LUSH for shampoo & conditioner, my boys definitely work up a thirst. Or PURE for lip balm and massage bars. It also just so happens that PURE is one of the many places that also give my pups treats! Great experience for the whole family.
There’s also a customer assistance kiosk perfectly mid-​placed for your convenience. It’s so cutely decorated with flowers all about, and the gal there is always genuinely ready to be of help. So feel free to take a «mall day» wether it be for window shopping, inspiration or out right therapy (shopaholic term) you won’t be dismayed. ;)

After their major renovation, I feel like UTC has become very high-​end. However, right now, there is very little parking because they are still working on renovating the parking lots. I like the new shops they have and I feel like the ambiance and décor of the mall is very nice. Westfield malls in San Diego are definitely getting a makeover for the better!
I highly recommend you stop by for your shopping needs but remember that parking can be limited and very hard to find!

I have to admit I really enjoy visiting this shopping center. I enjoy the open nature of the shopping center and a plus to the the clean and well maintained landscaping. The shopping center offers quite the array of shopping, including high end departments stores, Men’s and Women’s Fashion stores, Beauty and Health, and Sports stores, not to mention the high end Jewelry stores scattered about.
I really like visiting the specialty food stores in the center, and the food is not to shabby. The addition of Season’s 52 and Eureka have been a great additions. I don’t have personal experience with it yet, but I have heard they make a pretty burger.
The shopping center offers a regular parking lot, structural parking, and for those who want it, valet parking as well for a fee. Every time I have visited this center, security has always been visible, as well as the maintenance crews.
The shopping center is always a good place to come early in the mornings to get a good walk in before for the crowds of the day and evening arrive. Also, if you like high quality movies, they offer an ArcLight Cinemas.

Piped in chill music, lounging baskets, succulents, higher end shops, and a swank new movie theater.
The food court has transitioned into a gourmet food experience. Several food court standards changed their business names and identities to imply a fancier dining experience. Goodbye Great Khan’s, enter Mongrill. Steak Escape is now Charleys Philly Steak, I think you get the concept.
The restaurants at UTC have been upgraded too, focusing on healthy, upscale dining options like Tender Greens and trendy «Lemonade» which is opening up shop soon. They even have a Veggie Grill on site.
— My best bet for a good fun meal is Eureka burgers. It can get loud here, but some of the burger creations are pretty awesome.
