We always get great service from Tune Craft. We have been taking our vehicles, here for ten years and they always take good care of our cars. We had family visit from out of town with a car emergency at Christmas last year and they were able to get their car right in and back on the road. Sean and Andrea always take the time to answer all our questions and explain the repairs they recommend.

I have been sent in this garage by another dealer who was not able to perform a fix on my vehicle. It had a check engine light issue I needed to solve before bringing it to the smog test. Not very friendly, they came with a diagnosis after 24 hours (I had to rent a car while they were holding my car): the intake manifold had to be changed. Cost: 1400 dollars. Since the price was pretty high and was not totally convinced of this diagnosis after the failure of the previous dealer, I decided to go somewhere else. It was actually a simple broken wire between the oxygen sensor and the car computer. How could they not see this? The fix was 50 dollars, including the computer reset. My conclusion is that they are so eager to make money that they forget: 1. people who are not so ignorant that they think they are. 2. diagnosis procedure is something that requires a little focus rather than jumping into conclusions.

This company has wonderful customer service! Had to get a smog test with a quick turn over and they were able to squeeze me in. Not to mention they offer great snacks while you wait for your car to finish and you can tell this company cares about their customers. First experience here but first impression was I was really impressed.

I should have followed my instinct. Cannot say it’s good or bad experience but the impression and the flexibility is disappointing.
I don’t think it’s a «Complete Auto repairs» since its limited to certain type of repairs and services. The only thing that slightly caught my attention was Triple AAA «friendly» and close to my residence along with understanding my serious rust issue. I should have found more reasons to before making a permanent decision.
I have given this place too many chances and never will return unless it’s a DIRE emergency and as one reviewer stated «ignorance and convenience». I felt like I was dealing with Cool Master Automotive all over again * sighs and flails*.
I called in to schedule a smog test and was told their machine was down for a month and was referred to another smog station down the street thank you but no thank you.
Another disappointment is when I needed an oil change and the only time I was able to do it was a day before 4^th of July and was told by Shawn that he gave his mechanics an extra dayoff before the holiday *ugh.seriously* so I told him I’ll just take to the Ford dealership meaning *thanks at least Ford dealership was flexible and wanted my business (of course)”. Why bother when I feel like it will have another disappointment.

Long over due post
After going to one shop that messed my truck up then going to another to be told they didnt want to work on it, this was on my way back home. I stopped in and told them the problems Iv been having, no problem they said. Next day they found the issues and fixed everything for me. I picked up my jeep and ran good. I have taken it back a few times to have the belt replaced and a new temp sender installed.
Overall great service, knowledgeable staff, and always a good deal. If you have AAA you get 10% off and they have a rental company inside too. I have noticed that they have customers that have been coming back for years and years that means a lot.
I would recommend this shop to anyone in need of repairs or service on any vehicle.

I love Tune Craft. My husband calls Shawn my «mechanic friend», and I only know him from his shop. Shawn is a good mechanic with good Midwestern values, and I truly trust him. His prices aren’t the cheapest, but they are fair (he quotes high prior to repairs, then come in at cost/​below), and they do quality work. They don’t have shuttle service like some shops, but they will give you a ride if you are in a bind, although the driver will be a mechanic who should be working on your car. I usually just rode the MTS bus; there are 2 bus stops within 100 yds of the shop. Shawn did insist on giving me rides if my husband couldn’t get me when I was pregnant, though. Their waiting room is comfortable/​clean; there is a nice couch, and snacks (pretzels/​red vines) and coffee/​bottled water for customers. If I was waiting for a repair, I usu just walked across the street to Starbucks, though. They have after-​hours key drop, and limited Sat hours (Shawn commutes from Alpine, so I believe Sats are by appt only, but I’m not positive). I have also never had to wait more than 48 hrs to get in for repairs; usu he asked me to bring it in same day, or the next a.m. In response to the review about Shawn not using refurbished parts, I do believe that is his policy. He is very particular about wanting to make sure a repair is done properly, and he is pretty plain spoken, which to some people could come across as being short. He was even a little short with me once when we were talking about my truck because he was worried that my inaction had caused more damage to the truck (it hadn’t), more in a parent lecturing a child kind of way, and he generally acts as if I am one of his favorite customers. Shawn really loves cars, and taking care of his customers properly is VERY important to him (read: making sure their cars run well/​safely). If you want someone who will make you feel special every time you visit, head on over to Boulevard in PB; they’ll be super nice to you while they take all your $ for inappropriate repairs.
I started my journey with Shawn/​Tune Craft about 6 years ago when my husband’s 2001 Honda Civic started rattling and the check engine light came on. I’m not a car expert, but I like to understand what I am spending my money on, so I tend to do extensive research on vendors. I first took the Civic to Boulevard Auto in PB because of the great reviews on Unilocal.After they quoted me a $ 1500+ bill, I looked for a second opinion. I called another shop in SD, and was referred to Tune Craft, because they were too busy to take care of us, and we were under a time crunch as we were driving out of state for the holidays. I was also referred to Tune Craft by the head of my department at UCSD (who I believe to have excellent judgment). Shawn came up with a completely different diagnosis for the car than Boulevard, and he actually sent me some mechanic professional chat room conversations that explained why his diagnosis was more accurate, and did not get indignant about me questioning him. He also got our car done a couple of days ahead of time. Shawn charged me half of what the bill at Boulevard was, and his diagnosis was correct. That car ran perfectly until it died in a flash flood a couple of years later.

Fast forward a year or so, and the check engine light in my 2003 Ford Ranger turned on, and it started running really rough. I brought it in to get a quick diagnostic, which showed a misfire in cylinder #3. I didn’t have time to get it fixed that day, so I planned on bringing it back later. However, the light turned off in the middle of driving it (which is really weird since they aren’t sposed to turn off until the car is off), then didn’t turn back on for 2 yrs. When it did come back on, I brought it straight back to Tune Craft. They repaired it, with a tight budget (right before Xmas again, it’s a conspiracy) and got it to pass SMOG, though it still ran rough. Since I only drove about 3 times a wk I wasn’t in a huge hurry to put a lot of work into it at that time. Fast forward a couple of more years, and the light comes back on (it has been running rough this whole time). At this point we are about to move to North Carolina, where we are planning on selling the truck because I am pregnant, and we will get more $ for it there. Shawn and his mechanics got the truck running safely enough to get it across country, again on a tight budget, and they did give recos for further work, if needed. When the light came back on a few mos later, the mechanic we took it to in NC gave the exact same recos for repairs as Shawn had. When the light came on in NC I called Shawn for a reminder about the work that had been done last time, and he gave me an open ended invitation to contact him if I had more questions, or if he could help in any way. This was with no thought to us being return customers, he is just a truly good person who wants to help his customers, current and former. A++

Took the car here a few days ago and I’d say the overall impression was just «meh». I made an appointment two days before for an oil change and a check on the tire alignment, but when I got there, the guy behind the counter told me «we don’t do alignments here». Maybe there was a miscommunication, but I sure would have liked to know that on the phone while I was making the appointment! I was mainly here for the tire alignment, you see– my car pulls fairly strongly to the right – and I like to go to Valvoline to get my oil changed. But, the guy said he would take a look at it, and also check another noise I was having in the power steering for free, so I decided to go with it. He gave me a timeline of about two hours, so I walked the neighborhood to wait.
When I came back, the news was that the car is generally running well, and the alignment problem I’m having is a defect in my tires, not my car. They rotated the front tires for me and discovered that when you do that, the car now pulls to the left. They advised me to just put up with that a bit longer until the tread wears out and get new higher end tires then, so I guess I shall. But, in the end, I paid around 40 dollars and waited two hours for an oil change and a car that pulls to the left instead of the right… So, I just wish I’d known ahead of time they don’t do alignments.

Shawn and his team have been servicing our armada of used cars for over ten years. Shawn is a very honest guy, often providing me with options and the various risks associated with those options, allowing me to make decisions that suit me best.
As a regular customer, he also gives me early warning about parts that will need replacement in the upcoming months, allowing me to save up in advance. We drive vehicles that are 10+ years old and usually with greater that 150k miles, but our maintenance costs have only run about 5 or 6 cents per mile thanks to the good work at Tune Craft.
Before buying a used car, we always take it in to Shawn for a thorough «going over» before making the decision to buy — money very well spent. I’ve recommended this shop to many of my friends, always with good results. I like supporting a local business and more importantly an honest businessman. My biggest fear would be trying to find another mechanic should these guys go away.

Not a good experience. I took my Toyota in for smog. They were friendly, took me right in and called in 30 minutes. My truck didn’t pass. They offered to work on the ignition to get it to pass. I said the ignition system and more was recently repaired and declined their offer. I took it to my regular shop Wolf Automotive. Mike looked at my test and said it looked like the engine wasn’t warm when it was tested. I called and related this to Tune Craft. They said if they worked on my engine the test would be free otherwise it would cost $ 49.95. «But the engine wasn’t warm, I drove straight from home to your place, maybe two miles total.» Sorry, I’d have to pay my technician again so you’d have to pay me again. No thanks.
At the suggestion of Mike at Wolf Automotive I drove on the freeway to warm the engine before taking it to Convoy Smog. It passed with flying colors.
In the future I’ll pass on Tune Craft.

I have been taking my vehicles to Tunecraft for over 12, years now… and I drive in from La Mesa! Shawn and his crew do great repairs at a fair price… I have always been given good estimates for major repairs. And when my vehicles need repairs that can be safely delayed a month or two, Shawn gives me that option. He even told me things to look out for when I was looking at buying a used car in another city… things specific to that model.

In order to renew the registration on my 2000 Mustang, the DMV required that I get the dreaded SMOG certification at a STAR location. I checked out the list of stations on the dmv
website. That’s where I got the name of Tune Craft Auto Center. I quickly cross-​referenced the station on Unilocal (like you do), to make sure they were legit.
I called to see if I needed to make an appointment and Sean, let me know that he could probably squeeze me in same day since his smog technician was going to be out on vacation for a week. He told me to bring it by in an hour after I called and he’d see what he could do. So I bring it in thinking I’d be waiting for at least and hour. 15 minutes later my car was done. Boom! Done just like that. My head is still spinning at how fast it all happened.
I would highly recommend these guys to anyone. Not only are they professional and courteous, but they really have their act together! These guys took the dreadful chore of the smog check and turned it into the most painless 15 minutes of my life. Amazing!

It’s a small shop and it’s hard to get in and out, but Sean is the best. Excellent service and prices are more than reasonable. Straight shooters and they won’t gouge you.
I highly recommend them. Be advised: Sean the owner is a bit chatty.

I have a 2005 Hyundai Santa Fe that has 107K miles on it. My wife recommended Tune Craft when one of my belts started squealing (really annoying, btw!). One of the biggest draws was the AAA discount they offered. We decided that, since we intended on keeping the SUV for quite a while longer, we would have them replace the timing belt too. When we dropped it off, my wife also mentioned that she noticed the truck would overheat sometimes when sitting at a stop light with the AC on. Shawn told us they would look into that issue as well. A day later, Shawn sent an estimate and told us how long it should take to fix. We told him to go ahead.
Sure enough, the truck was ready when he told us it would be, and he charged us the price listed on the estimate, down to the penny. He also brought out the old parts and explained to us exactly what they did, and why. Additionally, he told us that the reason the truck would overheat was that the wiring harness for the cooling fan had burned out. Problem is, you can’t just buy a new harness, you have to get an entire new cooling fan assembly, which was pricy. So, instead of going through that process, they made their own wiring harness with quick connects, so that it could be replaced easily later on, if needed. And they still didn’t charge us more than the estimated price.
Also, he said he noticed the power steering was whining, which I hadn’t noticed. Instead of simply replacing the pump, Shawn did some research and found a notice from Hyundai stating that it was a recurring problem with Santa Fe’s, and had a quick and easy solution. Shawn did the procedure again again didn’t charge us a dime extra.
Lastly, since my wife and I had to leave town before the truck would be done, Shawn worked out a way for us to pick the truck up late Sunday night, then gave us his personal cell number to make sure everything worked out ok. Talk about service!

Thank you Tune Craft! Very honest, upfront, friendly group of gentleman. I went in to have my front brakes replaced. They did a free brake inspection and I found out there was nothing wrong with my breaks, just a rock got lodge in the wheel, making the squeaky/​scratchy sound that I thought was worn breaks. After I told them my steering wheel shakes they knew just what the problem was. I still had to replace my brakes w/​the rotors which was a bummer, but at least I feel safe now! They had a lot of repeat customers because many of the folks that came in Shawn & company knew them by name. I took that as a sign of great service. I will be back for future maintenance, and definitely recommend!

Brought my car here after so many positive Unilocal reviews (which upon second review now seem highly suspicious as so many were right in a row and from people with little/​no other reviews).
Long story short: they did an oil change and sent me on my way with literally no oil added back into the engine. I noticed it was running hot, but thought that must be a radiator/​thermostat issue that I’d get checked at next service (it never occurred to me there might be no oil in the engine). I don’t drive the car that often, but 1500 miles in I noticed the pressure light on the dashboard lighting up and my wife said it comes on occasionally, but goes away. For those that know, that light only comes on when there is literally no oil pressure. It’s a huge deal and if it’s caused by lack of oil in the reservoir, it’s a really bad thing.
I added 5 more quarts to get it to full (indicating it was empty). Hmm… maybe it had developed a leak? Maybe it’s «using oil» now?
Nope. Driveway was 100% clean and four subsequent oil changes have never shown to be a single drop low. They just didn’t refill it, plain and simple. My mechanic says it happens more than you’d think.
So how much engine damage was done by their carelessness? Impossible to say. But I can’t trust the car on long trips anymore or to go through the desert areas, so it’s near useless to us. They basically ruined my car.
