Toby Wells YMCA

Love it but outside of the Gymnastics area smells RANCID! PLEASE do something about this!

So, I have been to a few YMCA’S in the area. Mainly because you cannot beat the price for children activities. A bonus is that they really help the community, which is awesome. The Toby Wells gym has a lot nicer staff than some of the others I have been too. It’s clean and the actual gym is pretty legit. I like most of the instructors for group classes too. They really know what they are doing. The reason I’m only giving 4 stars and not 5 is due to child watch. Now, two of my children are older. So, they either workout with me or go to kids club. I have only one who goes to actual child watch. I do not know how I would feel about putting my child in the child watch if they were younger. Maybe during the day because they seem a bit older and more mature. However, in the evening there are a lot of kids and I have noticed the employees not fully paying attention. There have been 5 different times I have witnessed employees standing around looking at their phones instead of paying attention to the kids. Again, my child is older and can fend for themselves, so it’s not a big deal to me. I would feel uncomfortable if they were younger due to the lack of attention. Other than this, I really can’t complain about the facility and employees in general.

A great local Y. Parking can be tough at peak times and the pool temps are kept a little too warm, but the staff members are courteous and they’ve made some awesome upgrades since we’ve been members. Much more affordable, family-​friendly, and accessible than the big name gym chains. Check out this place before you break the bank on one of those.

I only use the weight room, so that is what my review is focused on. There’s a ton of cardio equipment if the cardio bunny thing is your jam. Lot of crossfitters here having seizures while doing «pullups» and generally flailing about, so the wait for a squat rack is long regardless of the time of day you go as there are only two. (Even if you go at 1 PM on a tuesday, they’re typically taken, for example) They do have bumper plates for deadlifts, so that’s pretty neato, and chalk seems to be accepted.
Long and short of it, if you just want a treadmill and somewhere to do leg curls, it’s great. If you’re more of a seasoned lifter, there’s not enough equipment.

Love the YMCA! Got a membership with my sister for $ 60/​month for both of us and unlimited classes (since I’m not very good working out solo).
They have schedules up for every month and have plenty of classes as well as a big variety of classes from yoga to TRX for both early and late times during the day. For the rest of the gym, Mon-​Thur is from 5AM-​10PM, Fri 5AM-​9PM, and Sat-​Sun 7AM-​7PM. The instructors are all very friendly and so motivating. There was seriously one instructor who was pregnant and due to give birth the next day who was KICKING MY BUTT in a class. Ego was damaged a little but dang did my body feel good! :)
Parking is a bit tricky because there’s one way to enter and one way to exit. They have a huge parking lot on the other side of the «park» as well as right next to the gym. I have never really had a problem with finding parking close to the gym.
They also offer day care and gymnastics but I’m not sure on the details on that. One thing I would LOVE for Toby Wells to get is a little snack bar or area for smoothies or even snacks. They have a vending machine though. They also have an indoor pool but I have yet to take an aquatic class but it’s on the to do list!
OH yeah, AND with this membership, you can go to 3 different locations-​Toby Wells, Mission Valley, and Copley Price. I haven’t been to Copley Price but Mission Valley is also a very nice location (might be the main location since it’s bigger). So no excuses to miss out on working out! Maybe some shopping therapy after a good work out to reward yourself at Fashion Valley.

I love Toby Wells YMCA. I can quite honestly say that the Toby Wells YMCA and the Mission Valley YMCA are the best gyms I have ever been to. Not is there a ton of options at both gyms both in equipment and classes, the facilities are super clean and all of the staff I encountered were very friendly and helpful.
I was in San Diego for most of August before moving to New York. I wanted to stay in shape, but also in air conditioning! The Y was offering two free weeks in August, which worked out perfectly for my time there. Both of the YMCAs had so many great classes at all times of the day that I never had to drag myself to workout. Classes were always fun, whether it was Zumba, Cycle, TurboKick, TRX, or Body Pump — I loved them all. Going to classes and meeting other members of the gym made working out easy and actually something to look forward to! I highly recommend these gyms to anyone in the area.

I do summer camp at YMCA at Toby wells and there great they keep u occupied, great staff, fun games, and they have a camp for every personality. Like too paint and make crafts and be creative? Arts and Crafts camp is the one for u. Like Lazer tag they have ULTRAZONE laser tag camp! Love going too theme parks or always dreamed of going too disneyland or Universal studios they have a camp for that too. Swimming, Surfing, Legos, Archery, Seaworld, Magic, and more YMCA summer camp is great they also have different themes for each week. YMCA is the place too go

This is one of the most friendly and professionally staffed YMCA. I was really impressed by how efficient the membership team was in coming up with a resolution to our unique issue. Jessica was so pleasant that after we were finished being helped I didn’t feel like leaving the YMCA. She truly is an asset to the organization. I was so happy with the customer service that I smiled pretty much the whole day and here I am mid afternoon thinking about that gal Jessica and I chose to Unilocal about her extraordinary service. All of the staff are courteous which makes this the place you want to transform your health!

Nice low-​key gym; Everything is clean and very well maintained, It also seems like they get new equipment on a regular basis. Great assortment of classes and times. Only complaint is that the hours are a bit restricted but it’s more of a family gym so that’s understandable.

Classes are awesome, facility is very clean and tidy! I can always find a machine and rarely have a problem getting a spot in class. I drive extra to go to toby wells over santee because the facility is much nicer and classes are way better! My son loves the gymnastics too! They even have a great playground outside

Great gym **except**
You want to use the pool and have any sort of fun.
For sure do not try to bring your kids to open swim unless you want them to just sit and tread water. This apparently is all they are allowed to do. The teen age lifeguards stand above you as you swim just daring the kids to splash or scream happily. This will quickly earn a mean stare down.
I just recently tried things again and now the open swim is roped off and the kids have take a test and earn a wristband.
God forbid they got excited and walked /​ran which brought out a chorus of screams from the lifeguards.
The pool is heated which is nice. If the kids are cold don’t try to warm them up in the adjacent jacuzzi as no kids allowed.
Policy enforcement also seems all over the place regarding the workout room.
My 10 year old has been going to do the elliptical and treadmill for about 6 months, and when we came one day a trainer /​staff member said he had to be certified on the equipment, and of course you have to make an appointment for that, so no workout today. It took 45 minutes and a test.
They do have new equipment.

Great family enviroment for after work activities. Parking around 5 is a big problem, is my only concern. Staff are super friendly and helpful, clean facility!

This gym is near work and is a good alternative when I don’t make it to the larger Mission Valley YMCA. A membership here works at the larger Mission Valley Y and the newly opened Copley-​Price YMCA. I’ve never had to wait for equipment and the facility is clean and well-​maintained. Please note that there’s a large gymnastics program at this YMCA, and the hallways can get crowded now and then, but they’ve got their own section of the facility and doesn’t impact the weight room or cardio areas at all. The staff is friendly and there’s a full suite of classes to take advantage of. It’s a great place to get in shape!

I’m a big fan of the Y. This is my first time going to Toby Wells. I need to look around more, check it out, but my wife & I took a class today with Nikki & it was awesome. My wife goes way more than I do, & she thought it was a good workout. (which means it really kicked my butt)
My one and only complaint (and it’s a dumb one) is that all the water fountains are super low. I felt like I was doing yet another squat just to get a drink & after working out, it was hard to do. I told you it was dumb.
Thank you to the YMCA for great programs & classes for our family. We really do love going to the Y.

Great gym!
I usually do my morning workouts here or lunch hour workouts.
For my morning workouts, I usually opt to take class. I hate doing cardio, so showing up to a class and having someone tell me to do it, is what usually gets the job done.
My favorite morning classes are cycle and bootcamp. Those morning classes go from 5:30 — 6:30 AM. I can’t think of a time where they were completely packed that I didn’t get a spot, which is nice. So if you’re running a few minutes late, no worries.
The lunch time and afternoon classes are what books up the fastest. Since there are gymnastics here, the afternoons are always crazy busy and parking can really be a challenge.
So here’s a quick rundown of what I love about this YMCA gym:
— Great classes! Everything from TRX, cycle, bootcamp, swim, to body pump. They got you covered. And there are classes all throughout the day! You’re bound to find something that fits your schedule
— Updated, clean, and user friendly equipment. Their equipment is state of the art and so nice! They always update it and I’ve never seen a machine out of service.
— Clean facilities! Weight room, stretch area, gymnastics room, swimming pool, Jacuzzi, full locker rooms, and child care room. They’ve thought of it all.
— Staff is friendly and knowledgeable.
Only challenge can be parking at times, but that just depends when you go.

This is a review of their indoor soccer. I play in a co-​ed league on Mondays/​Tuesdays and have to admit, it’s quite a blast. The «indoor» soccer is actually played in what reminds me of a hockey rink, but it’s actually outside. Nothing wrong with playing soccer under the stars.
The refs are OK (not a huge fan, but I’m a VERY physical player), and they do a great job maintaining the turf and keeping it clean. Someone below me mentioned problems with the scoreboard and leaves on the field, and both of these issues appear to have been fixed.

I hate going to the gym. Just absolutely hate it. But I’m 40 and I know that the gym is a necessary evil if I want to continue to lead a lifestyle of travel and adventure. (LOL)
So back story — I used to go to Curves but their hours sucked and the whole atmosphere just drove me to drink after a couple of years. My sister has been going here for years and loves it but she’s one of those crazy gym people, so I was not convinced. But they were having their semi-​annual no sign up fee special, so I joined. And surprisingly, even though I hate every moment of every day that I am here, I know that I made the right choice to join the Y.
The cardio machines are all super nice and new and I love that you can sign up for a Precor account and it tracks all sorts of stats for you. TVs on the machines are definitely a bonus. The weight equipment is on a circuit — there is a set of beginner machines in addition the ones the hardcore enthusiasts seem to use.
I haven’t ventured into taking any classes yet, but they are plentiful and they seem to have the same mellow vibe as the main training room.
Definitely take advantage of free services, like having a trainer go through the circuit to show you how to use the machines. It will really help you to build a routine that is right for you and your fitness level (now and where you want to be…)
So I guess this is pretty much a RAH RAH, this gym is rad review. Don’t get me wrong, I still hate the gym. I am just able to deal with it because the Y works for me.

Why oh why did it take me so long to join the YMCA???
I love this gym and this location. Great kids events, great classes, great summer camps, great machines, very clean, nice pool, awesome fields.
The only downside is parking can be a bit of a pain. Only one way in and one way out and they are not the same. Overflow parking can be found across the street. Its and lot for some industrial complex that is always empty.
I also love that membership here gets you into the Mission Valley and Friars Road Y’s too. Depending on where I am, I can stop in to the closest location and get a quick workout in.
