The Yellow Book Road

This book store has been apart of the educational community in San Diego for as long as I can remember. My grandmother, a teacher as well, took me to their La Mesa location as a child. I remember loving to explore the store.
Now I am a teacher and the location has moved to Liberty Station. Not much else has changed. Ann and her husband do a great job of stocking the store with everything a teacher or parent could need. The store also does many community events around San Diego. If you want to experience a bookstore at its finest, go here!

Decent for a little book store, nothing fancy, staff was friendly but nothing amazing from my perspective. Worth checking out if you are in the area, not worth going out of your way for

How lucky San Diegans are to have this invaluable resource, dedicated specifically and exclusively to children, teachers, and parents right in our backyard! (they do also have a website.)
The Yellow Book Road (love the name!) does take us to the many Wizards within all of us through an incredible range of books on all topics, genres, and all ages for children and youths.
In addition there are many other related products besides books that will delight and inspire children, parents and teachers. I have ordered such an accessory product, a jar full of quotes to inspire teachers, and gave one to my sister, who is a music teacher in Vermont. She loved it!
The owner is not only an expert on all things children book-​related, but she is a genuinely warm and caring person. Expect a warm welcome and smile, and great guidance for your book search when you enter the well stocked and charming
Yellow Book Road.

With the Common Core is full swing now, I have slowly but surely increasing the amount of non-​fiction in my class room available for students. I stopped in the Yellow Book Road, once located in La Mesa and now at Liberty Station, to look for such books.
I found some paper pack books, mostly on animals and geographic locations (
). I did like their collection of Zoo Books so I picked up a could on animals that correlate with curriculum that we use at our district (
). I was told that they place to increase their inventory later this summer, right for the new school year.
In addition provided books and materials for teachers, they also carry many items for families with children, such as learning games, phonics, and art materials.

I love bookstores and its great to have one in San Diego catering to Children. My only suggestion would be to update the toddler area. Maybe put some pillows down for sitting on, or a little Lego table or train track to keep busy hands entertained while the grown ups pick out books. Wasn’t able to make it for story time, but I hope to check it out soon.

The customer service here is excellent. Knowing it was a «small» (not chain) bookstore, I expected to feel pressured to buy something the second I walked into the door — you know, that desperation vibe small businesses often have. But that wasn’t at all the case at the Yellow Book Road. The staff was relaxed, friendly, low-​key, and helpful when I asked for help. The prices were reasonable and the selection was unbeatable. I wish I lived closer so that I could visit more often, but you can be sure I will be returning to Yellow Book Road. I definitely recommend this bookstore!

Went in today with two hyper cuties, and the lady behind the register was very patient and helpful. I had found a good deal on Unilocal for $ 20 worth of books for $ 10 and walked out with 4 books and spending a little over $ 5 extra out of pocket thanks to their 10% military discount. I will return again!(loved the little play area that kept my daughter busy for a bit!)

My favorite local bookstore. All kids and young adult books. Although some of us adults enjoy those young adult books, too (Hunger games, Twilight, etc).
The owner Anne is really wonderful. She has read so many of these kids books, and if you come in, will talk genuinely to you and your kids about what they’ve been reading and what they like, and what these books are about.
Walked out w/​about a dozen books today, and several more on order. I really love this place, and they clearly love their shop. Absolutely recommend!

I’m reposting this review since the store owners removed it. It is not a nasty review — just an account of my experience. A response or comment from the owner would have been useful instead of alienating an almost new customer.
It was my first time in the store — I walked to the register and waited a few minutes for the owner to finish with a customer so I could ask for help. I realized it was going to take a while (they were mostly talking about family) so I looked around while I waited.
I had still not been acknowledged or greeted.
I came back to the register with 2 items to purchase since I needed to get back to work) The owner was still with the first customer and the next customer was asking about setting up the store for a children’s event. I waited patiently a few minutes with my items for purchase in hand but finally gave up and left as they were going into extensive details about how the event would go. I had money in my purse ready to spend in the store:) Apparently they don’t need new customers!

Excellent, excellent store. We probably go three times a month with our two-​year-​old.
They have a great selection although I would like to see them pull out award-​winning books (especially picture books) in their own section and staff recommendations! Sometimes it’s busy and I don’t want to take up the time to ask someone for a new picture book (no, we have that one. No, we have THAT one).
I wish they did more author events on the weekends.
They’re always very patient with wee ones and parents, there’s a big lawn right outside the store to burn off some excess energy.

Such a wonderful place with great people. Ann is wonderful and very helpful. I try to get all my books for my daughter from here. It is a charming book store that has a wonderful staff that are willing to help in any way possible.

I love taking my kids to this bookstore. It is a cute little shop inside the beautiful liberty station and my kids love it. They always have all the lastest and greatest for children’s books. The couple that owns the place are super sweet too. They always talk to my kids and make them feel special. You don’t get that kind of experience at a big name book store. The wife knows all about the books and where each and every one is located. It is pretty amazing really! They even give a military discount which is awesome for us military families. I won’t buy children’s books anywhere else!

Charming little indie book store for kids!
Pros: staff and service are stellar! They’ve special ordered books for me multiple times and are very vigilant about calling me with updates! Great selection! Excellent author events and children’s programs. Great nearby park, kids hair salon, bike paths, and restaurants.
Cons: a little out of the way at the back of Liberty Station in Point Loma, limited Spanish language section (but then again, who doesn’t!)
Overall, a great place to purchase books for your kids or gifts. The owners are super friendly and send out great email updates for their events. They are very knowledgeable and what they don’t know, they’ll research until they do. They can give great suggestions for both classics and new authors in all age ranges. Ann and her staff do a great job!

I came across this bookstore while walking through Liberty Station in Point Loma. It’s in an area that has just recently been renovated, and I wouldn’t have known they were there if I hadn’t wandered down the sidewalk. There’s no advertising around the area to bring someone over to some of the areas in Liberty Station that now have some great little shops.
That being said, what a great book store. It’s geared toward children of all ages and even has young adult books. The staff was very nice and welcoming. They have a pretty large selection of books. It’s very unique and I recommend you stop by!

You want service service service and knowledge of the books and the book industry? You want the person at the counter to have enthusiasm and interest in books? Then this is the place to stop by this summer with your kids and feel good that this one toy you’re buying for them will be one of their best toys ever. A book is like a soft bed of dreams and this bookstore has your dream number. Go in and tell Ann or any wonderful staff that I sent you and you’re so happy that I did. Great selection on books AND helpful customer service! I appreciated their wide selection of books, but most of all the friendly lady who provided me with an assortment of book/​genre recommendations. Her knowledge and expertise assisted in my search to find new classroom read aloud books. I wouldn’t have received the same insight at a Borders or Barnes and Noble. Come out and support our local book owners/​shops!

Yellow Book Road is a great alternative to Lakeshore for teaching supplies! Charts, instructional books, name tags, etc. etc. they have it all!
They have a wide selection of books including the classics and newer released books.
Highly recommend for fellow teachers and parents who homeschool their children.

This the best little children’s book store! They have all the classics and popular books alike. I get on such a high when I go in here that I have to fight tears of happiness just being around all the wonderful books. I see many familiar faces in the books I have read over the years, many in my childhood. I just love books. I highly recommend this place if you are looking for a book or even teaching supplies. I think they give teacher discounts, too. You can’t give a better present to a child (or adult) than a good book to read!

Exceptional children’s bookstore. Huge selection and knowledgeable staff. If you are a teacher in SD and don’t know about Yellow Book Road you must get in your car and head over immediately. Many times I have gone in and just said I want a book about «x» and any member of the staff will flit around and within 3 minutes you’ll have an armful to select from. You can’t say the same about chain stores where the staff give you that huh look, point and say over there. Besides books you’ll find a wonderful selection of gifts for children or teachers.
