Tailwalker Sportfishing

Really a disappointing trip. Went at the peak of the season and didn’t even get a bite. Hard to imagine when half day boats were catching fish and we were out all day! I had the impression we were getting a boat ride and not much effort trying to really catch fish. Dragged lures all day
and that doesn’t take any effort. Really, really a sad trip… I’ve been fishing for 40 years and never had a trip like this. Won’t go again on this boat!!!

Capt Rich had an opening in the peak of this years el nino tuna season and we jumped all over it. This 31′ Parker will bring your group of 4 out there comfortably. It’s a great boat and a great captain. He had us on the tuna early and we bagged 4 nice ones, including a blue fin! This was our first time tuna fishing and we had a blast. The gettin’ won’t always be this good but Rich had us rigged and learning in no time. The seat’s on top of the cabin are the best! Thanks Rich!

Captain Rich is one of THE best fisherman /​captain I have ever fished with in my 35 plus years of fishing in the US and around the world. My family (wife and 12 yr old son) and I went out with him twice in August, and both times, we limited out on Yellowfin Tuna and Yellowtail. He always has a specific plan of attack to begin the day but adjusts as necessary because he has a great network of trusted skippers to get real time fishing conditions on the different spots (hey, it’s a big ocean out there and the fish move around all the time), and his boat is fast and can zip around to find fish as needed. He earns absolutely every penny — he’s got a state of the art boat and equipment, he does not skimp on gas (even though gas is expensive!!) or the fishing time, and his fish handling and filleting skills are phenomenal resulting in super quality fish on your table. Above all, he’s a really nice guy and he just flat out loves to fish.

I recently had a fantastic day of fishing with Captain Rich. A group of 5 friends chartered the Tailwalker and came away with a bunch of tuna. Rich knew the best spots for all the different types of fish, but allowed us to set the priority for what to target. He also has a great network of other experienced local fishermen, and his buddy radioed us with the exact location of a school of feeding tuna while we were traveling out, so we had caught probably 15 or so within an hour of getting out far enough. Rich mentioned he was native to San Diego, and I really think all his experience fishing the area and being connected to his network here made the trip as successful as it was. It is a bit more expensive than going on a bigger commercial boat, but in my opinion totally worth it because there’s no competition for the crew’s attention (baiting hooks, getting the fish off the hook, re-​baiting, etc), and there are way fewer lines to get tangled with or compete with for the fish.
Besides that, Rich and his crew (Nico was working on our trip) were cool, friendly, and relaxed guys who really knew what they were doing. I will absolutely book Tailwalker again next time I’m ready to hit the open sea and catch some fish.

Just went on an awesome fishing trip with Captain Rich and Nico. We were 5 deep sea fishing amateurs and we still brought in 18 yellow fin tuna.
Truly Captain Rich’s knowledge and friendliness served us well. Even when we broke lines or our bait took the hooks they were right there to re-​hook/​re-​bait and keep all of us with a tuna on our line.
Truly an amazing time and we came back with way more tuna than we could eat!
