Tag Construction Services

Full disclosure; Tag never actually put a roof on our house, so I am not reviewing their actual work; they never got that far. This review is based on customer service, business practices, and communication, all of which are woefully lacking. The best way to describe this company is that they under-​bid, over-​commit, and under-​execute. After several months trying to get the bidding process complete [we made the mistake of trying to get them to build a patio cover at the same time as the re-​roof; missed appointments and poor communication] we finally signed the contract on 9 October for a scheduled start week of 4 Dec. Tag’s bid was by far the lowest (I now know way too low) of 4 other companies that put in bids. All other roofing contractors laughed at the idea of matching Tag’s estimate, i.e. they low-​balled the bid. There was no mention of a time period for work start/​completion on the contract (I’m told an industry standard) and a requirement for 50% payment on the start day (not an industry standard). Yes, we should have recognized at the time that we were not dealing with professionals and paid-​up for a better company; full responsibility for this mistake is ultimately ours. There was rain (2 days) the week before we were set to start, so we were expecting a commensurate delay. What ensued was weeks of delay, no follow-​up, no communication, and more delays. One day of rain seemed to equate to weeks of rescheduling for our job. These delays caused the roofing job to run into our house painting job which necessitated us to request another reschedule. They were more than happy to have us asking for a reschedule since they were so overextended and needed time to add a truck and workers. The scheduler guaranteed we would be a priority for the week of 18 Jan. I called on Tuesday the week before (12^th) and was assured they were back on schedule and barring any major weather events would be at our house on Monday the 18^th. On the Thursday before job start (14^th) there was some drizzle, so on the day they were supposed to begin (18^th) we got an «email» (not even a phone call) stating we would need to reschedule for three weeks later due to the «extreme rainfall»! Why didn’t they tell me they were already behind schedule when I called the week before. One day of drizzle = three weeks of delay? This is where I believe the low-​ball bid comes into play; they just didn’t want the business and didn’t have the integrity to be honest with us or stand up to their commitment. Bottom line, the one thing Tag did right was agree to give us an unconditional release from our contract; probably made them as happy as it did us. You get what you pay for, so take some advice and avoid Tag at all costs.

Have leak in my garage. Called TAG Construction Services on Tuesday and they said Tom the Owner would be out on Thursday. Tom never showed up and no phone call to say he could not make the appointment. It’s now Saturday and no contact from TAG Construction Services. If you cannot show up to provide an estimate, how could I ever trust TAG be on time and do the job. Very unprofessional.

They did a great job on our home. Karl came out recently after a misunderstanding and went beyond to provide good customer service.

I need a new roof, and not knowing any roofers I turned to Unilocal to find one. Called Tag Construction Services and the first thing I asked the man who answered the phoned representing Tag was, do you service the Chula Vista area, of which he said yes. I then told him I need a roof and he set up an appointment for me for 2 days later and a time in the morning that they’d be there. The day came, the time came and there I sat waiting, and waiting, and waiting. ALL day and into the early evening I never left my house or phone. They NEVER came, and NEVER phoned me. Maybe they do good work if they bother to come out to your place (SHRUG?), but fool me once, shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. You’ll never get that 2^nd chance! Very unprofessional!!!

Contacted this company on 7÷21÷15, reached a voice mail line and left a message with my pertinent information and asking for a site visit and quote. Never got a response. Followed up using the company website and asked again. Same result, no response. Maybe they do good work, but I value customer service and don’t appreciate no follow up. I’m going with another company that did take the time to call me back.

I have tried to schedule with Tag Construction on two occasions now to redo a section of our concrete tile roof. On both occasions their communication was abysmal — no call backs, not calling back or emailing when promised to provide a schedule. Every time I talk to Karl he is great on the phone and promises a follow-​up within a day or two and then nothing. I do not have time for this unprofessionalism. A copy of the of the cancellation email I just sent them is below. I cannot comment on the quality of their roofing work as they would never actually return my emails and calls to actually do the work. I guess they must have bigger projects but some basic courtesy would have been appreciated.

Now two different times I have attempted to do business with Tag Construction. In mid 2013 you provided me this same quote and failed to show up on two different occasions when you had said you would start the work. This time, in 2015 you confirmed your previous quotre on June 24^th and I signed and returned the Acceptance that same day. Ever since then I have emailed and called multiple times asking when you expected to do the work. Each time, I was told it would be several weeks and I was told you had a scheduling meeting that week and would get back to me in a day. Most recently I called and talked to Karl G on July 21^st and he told me again you had a scheduling meeting and I would be contacted by that Friday July 24^th to confirm the start date. Not once have you contacted me back on the scheduling.
Your communication and follow-​up on scheduling and promises to reply are meaningless.
I have found a different contrtactor.

We recently hired TAG Construction & Roofing to put a new roof on our home. The job required stripping off THREE existing roofs. The price quoted was very reasonable under the circumstances. Some boards needed to be replaced and they performed that work for a very low extra charge. The work was completed in less than four days and we were able to get back to our normal lives. The new roof looks great and most importantly — no leaks! There was heavy rain just days after the work was completed and everything held up perfectly.
Our only issue was a dent in a rain gutter. Carl immediately called a company and had it replaced at no cost to us. Carl and Tom really stand by their work and are totally professional and reliable. We have already recommended TAG to friends and neighbors and will continue to do so for years to come. Thank you guys for everything.

If you read below, you will see that Tag did our roof, and three weeks later we found leaks. I Contacted them and they responded immediately!
Upon inspection with our pool solar company On The Same Morning (!) it was found that it was due to our Pool Solar company making an installation error.
Even though it was NOT TAG’s fault, they have promised to re-​do the areas of leaking/​damage for FREE!
This is very kind and generous of TAG, and I want to acknowledge TAG and their top notch service!

ISSUE!
TAG Roofing re-​did the roof on my newly purchased home on June 29^th. they came when they said, did do the work that they said, and everything looked good. On July 20^th, we found major leaks, with water dripping through the ceiling and cracks forming over my sleeping 5 year old’s bed. We have informed TAG today and I will post what they do about this.

So far so good. Tom called me within an hour of my email to him, and is coming out to review and inspect.

I have replaced many roofs over the years. This was by far the best experience i have ever had. Karl and his crew were clean (I never found a nail or any scrap), professional and a pleasure to have work on my home. My job was complicated by having tile on top of the leaking roof paper, plus I had a great deal of wood rot. Tag pulled his crew so i could replace the wood, then they pulled off again when I had out of town guest for a few days. No contractor has ever done anything like that. To top it off their price was substantially the best of 4 other bids that I got.
Bottom line if you need a roof call Karl at Tag Roofing!

Karl /​TAG was hired by my wife and I to do a roof repair and skylight replacement on our home due to a leak we had. Karl was able to get the job completed for us and it looks great. We had recent rains and there is no sign of leaks. Thanks for your help.

Karl replied promptly, came out and gave a fair assessment for storm damages, made a recommendation for future maintenance but let me know that’s several years down the road and all is well at this time. Got the job done quickly.

Had a tight timeline to try and get my house on the market. TAG did a great job working hard to get things completed quickly. No complaints about the team, had a great experience. Highly recommend TAG. Had a plumber come by who side jobs with his buddies roofing company, he specifically noted that it looked like they did a great job on the roof.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION:
I had these guys out for an estimate and asked about the insurance coverage.
They told me that they were covered for working on my roof.
Well, i found out they lied. I went onto the CSLB​.CA​.GOV website and searched their license number and it shows they are in fact NOT COVERED FOR ROOFING.
If something goes wrong, you are out of luck. They will not be held liable for any damage that happens during their working on your roof.
Do yourself a favor and find someone doing it the right way with the right license and insurance.

Being an insurance agent locally, this is the only roofing company that I refer to my clients in San Diego –Great service and great products–

Just wanted to say that Karl promises big but then doesn’t supply. I am rewriting my review because although he promised that the sparrows would be gone and couldn’t get into the tile roof they are back. I tried to contact him, but I guess he is done with us. Okay, so now I am paying someone to do the job the right way. Alpine Roofing is putting in the bird barrier like Karl was supposed to install with the roof job.
It’s costing more money, but at least this time it will be done right.
Shame on you Karl and shame on me for trusting you.

I put off having the roof fixed long enough, so I called for the estimate. As the estimator offered me options, I made a few judgment calls and actually the total quote was really very reasonable. What I don’t know about roofing was canceled out by how much they do! They gave me a good, better, and best scenario and I took the evening to consider and accepted their better offer. Work was completed in a little over a week and I will not need to worry about the roof again anytime soon.

After reading so many 5 star reviews on Unilocal,we selected Tag as one of the five companies to bid on our roof replacement.
We sent an email to Tag Sunday morning and received a call back Monday morning and they set us up with an appointment for Tuesday; they stayed in contact when the appointment time needed to be adjusted.
Karl Godenschwager was very thorough, explained what the process would be, explained the product (Owens Corning) and answered our questions.
We are looking forward to having Tag install our new roof.

Wow I am impressed and would recommend Tag,
My parents have not had very good luck with contractors; have been taken advantage of by overpriced and shoddy work. They needed to have their roof replaced, hired someone that left them without a roof for months, adding tremendous stress, leading to my mom having a stroke and me stepping in. When they supposedly finished and wanted additional money, I said I would have an inspection before paying anything more.
I did a search on Unilocal and called a couple of places before I reached Karl at Tag, who was very compassionate, understanding and said he would be by that same day. Within a couple hours, Karl arrived and I found out that the contractor doing the original work did not have insurance, should not have staff, etc. so I immediately asked them to leave and not come back as Karl inspected the roof and of course, there were things that needed to be corrected.
When I tried to pay Karl for his immediate response, assistance and helping me out during a very stressful time, he refused and said, «It’s the least he could do when someone takes advantage of an elderly couple». At that point, we hired Karl to fix the issues on the roof. Within days, his people came out and resolved the issues so my parents can rest easy that they will not have a leaky roof.
I was so impressed, that we are now in the process of getting on their schedule to add a patio to my parents house, which I will be happy to share that experience when it is complete.
Bottom line, honest, great attitude, great customer service, and someone we will call on for any work at any of our families’ houses in the San Diego area. Cannot come up with the right words to express how thankful I am so all I can say is THANK YOU, THANK YOU KARL!

Tag Roofing is just wrapping up re-​roofing our 50 year old house that has a challenging 7.5÷12 pitch. Karl was very prompt and efficient with the bid and getting back with me on any questions and concerns. He would come out if needed, so there was never a point when I felt they were not very responsive.
They outbid most of the other roofing companies and added a few gems to the deal to make it completely worth looking into their free estimate of work.
The workers are very skilled and clean. Sure– it’s a complete mess when you have to pull two layers of old shingles with paper and replace damaged wood, but they have a great cleaning crew to recover the nails and blow out the never-​ending shingle grit.
Overall, Tag Roofing did an awesome job, finished in the time he estimated and at the price he quoted. This is the second house I’ve had to re-​roof, so I’m aware of some of the challenges with getting quality work. Very happy with their work.
