The SPEAK (Suicide Prevention Awareness and Knowledge) program is part of San Diego Unified School District. We are providing suicide prevention education to every staff member and parents at middle and high schools, and students in the 7th, 9th and 11th grades in the district. Our goal is to raise awareness and reduce stigma about both mental illness and suicide prevention. Although a leading cause of non natural death in our county for all ages, suicide is not a topic that is ever talked about. We’re hoping to change that. We use the Yellow Ribbon Suicide Prevention Program material encouraging students to «Ask for Help» for themselves and their friends. For the adults we encourage them to «Be A Link» to youth in need.
History
Established in 2010.
This program came to be after the district was awarded a contract by San Diego County Mental Health to provide Prevention Early Intervention services to youth.
